RIBA Lecture 2011Thomas HeatherwickIn association with Sheffield Hallam UniversityTuesday 8 November, 18.30

The annual RIBA Lecture gives an eminent non-architect the opportunity to explore a themethat challenges the architecture profession andstimulates wider debate. This year renowneddesigner Thomas Heatherwick considers the blurring of boundaries between design and architecture and poses the question ‘When does design become architecture?'

Thomas is an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA, Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art andHonorary Doctor of Sheffield Hallam University.Heatherwick Studio, established in 1994, has a team of over 60 people, with various backgroundsincluding architecture, product design, model-making, landscape design and fine art. His BritishPavilion for the Shanghai Expo won the 2010 RIBA Lubetkin Prize.

Jencks Award 2011Eric Owen MossTuesday 6 December, 18.30

This year’s Jencks Award winner Eric Owen Mosshas, over 30 years, evolved a unique local grammarof architecture in Culver City, Los Angeles. Here he has created a modern vernacular that is at once creative, critical and evocative – showing a commitment to place and character that is rare if not unique.

The annual Jencks Award is given to an individual or practice that has made a major contribution toboth the theory and the practice of architecture. The lecture is chaired by Charles Jencks, designer,author and broadcaster.

African MetropolisDavid AdjayeTuesday 22 November, 18.30

David Adjaye is one of the world’s mostaccomplished young architects. Over a ten-yearperiod, the Tanzanian born Adjaye has visited 52African cities, paying tribute to the continent’sdiverse metropolitan architecture and challengingterrains. In his talk David introduces the key civicthemes arising from the forthcoming publicationAdjaye • Africa • Architecture and discusses the ever shifting contemporary African urbanexperience. The talk is followed by an exclusivebook signing.

Cities for PeopleLKE Ozolins Lecture 2011Jan GehlTuesday 29 November, 18.30

Growing demands for safe, sustainable and healthy cities are driving the search for newplanning strategies for a post-petroleum age. A people-oriented approach to city planning mayconstitute a strategy for meeting these challenges.

Jan Gehl discusses the need for re-orientation of our cities through global case studies from, amongothers, Copenhagen and New York and illustratesthe case for people-inspired interventions in city development.

The Ozolins Lecture is given each year by an architect of international stature, in memory of LKE Ozolins.

James Stuart and the Birth of the Greek RevivalTuesday 15 November

The publication by James Stuart andNicholas Revett of the first volume of The Antiquities of Athens in 1762sparked across Europe anenthusiastic response to delicatesmall Hellenistic buildings. Copies and adaptations ranged from churchtowers to boathouses. A selection ofStuart’s own designs and those of hiscontemporaries and successors arediscussed by Charles Hind, RIBA.

Ptolemy Dean is a British architect specialising in historic preservation, as well asdesigning new buildings that are in keeping with their historic or natural settings.He is also known for his appearances on two BBC television series, Restorationand The Perfect Village. He talks about his recent commission to produce amasterplan for the historic St Albans School site, including renovations of theexisting gymnasium and New Hall, and plans to preserve and enhance theancient Abbey Gateway. ‘Puttin’ on the Glitz’: The Golden Years of Art Deco Architecture in Britain1 October–26 November, Gallery 2

Enjoy an exhibition that explores Art Deco architecture at its peakduring the inter-war years, using vintage photographs from theRIBA British Architectural Library Photographs Collection.

Art Deco was often applied to transient building types such asshops and restaurants, tending to obscure how ubiquitous a style it was. This exhibition seeks to redress the balance by displayingnot only Art Deco classics such as Odeon cinemas but also ahost of lesser known buildings such as Conchita Supervia’s flat inLowndes Square, London, and a fish and chip shop in Sunderland.

A complementary display, Art Deco Triumphant, runs concurrentlyin the Library, see page 11.

Art Deco Triumphant: The Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et IndustrielsModernes, Paris 19251 October–26 November, British Architectural Library

Complementing Puttin’ on the Glitz, this display explores thecelebrated exhibition that gave Art Deco its name and helped tolaunch the style onto the world stage. On show are photographsfrom the RIBA British Architectural Library Photographs Collectionas well as contemporary books and prints which were issued to advertise the show’s pavilions and exhibits and illustrate itsemphasis on modernity and consumption.

Pavilion of Protest25 October–17 November, Florence Hall

An exhibition exploring the costs of an architecturaleducation and the hardship that some studentsendure while also showcasing the enormous ability that exists in UK schools of architecture.

Zap Architecture have produced a series of worksthat comment on the expenditure of an architecturestudent versus the remuneration expected oncequalified. Working in collaboration with the SheffieldUniversity School of Architecture they have createda focal Pavilion of Protest, presenting data from over1,400 surveyed students. Top entries from a nationaldrawing competition that celebrates the wealth oftalent among architecture students is also displayed.

Architecture Open 6 October–4 November, Gallery 1

A new showcase responding to the theme ofunseen, this exhibition displays the work of RIBAmembers in London. The exhibition includesconceptual projects, paintings, drawings andmodels, some of which have never previously been seen. Work ranges from star architects tohousehold names and lesser known practices.

Gold Standard: Great Architecture from the Royal Gold MedalUntil 1 October, Gallery 1

A display presenting the work of nine of the many architects and architectural practices whohave received the Royal Gold Medal over the last 150 years, including the latest recipient Sir DavidChipperfield CBE. Given in recognition of a lifetime'swork, the annual Royal Gold Medal is approvedpersonally by Her Majesty the Queen.

An exhibition that reveals the work ofBedford Lemere & Co who, throughtheir pioneering photography, becamethe leading English firm of architecturalphotographers, setting the standardsfor those who followed.

The firm’s photographs capture newbuildings in pristine condition, oftenshowing the work of leadingcontemporary architects, interiordecorators, designers and artists.

Curated by English Heritage, theexhibition reveals the exceptionalquality, depth and sharpness of theimages which render them as freshand legible today as when they werefirst composed.

Albertopolis:The Development ofSouth Kensington andthe Exhibition RoadCultural Quarter26 November–29 April

Drawing on previously unseenobjects from the V&A and RIBAcollections, this display charts thedevelopment of South Kensingtonand the Exhibition Road CulturalQuarter from 1851 to the present day. Forgotten Spaces 2011From underground climbing tunnels, city grottos, rooftop social hubs and urban farms, enjoy two exhibitions showcasing the best of theForgotten Spaces 2011 entries and explore alternative ways to use and interact with urban space.

Forgotten Spaces is about looking at the future development of our cities differently. Based on an open ideas competition, it invitesarchitects, students and designers of all kinds to submit proposals for overlooked plots of land in Greater London and the Sheffield City Region.
