    NOTEWORTHY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

    05 October MediaCorp National Science ChallengeIn the televised finals of the National Science Challenge broadcast onMediaCorp Channel 5, the RI team comprising Darren Chua (3F), PohYing Ming (3F), Samuel Fong (3Q), Li Bing Jian (3F), Jeremy Tian (3G) andEugene Lee (3F) - fought hard to secure third place. They had previouslygone through two pre-qualifying rounds in May, and were one of thetwelve teams that made it to the televised rounds of the competition. TheNational Science Challenge was jointly organised by A*STAR and ScienceCentre Singapore, with support from the Ministry of Education to promoteScience among students and the local public.

    09 October China Western Mathematics Invitational OlympiadFour RI students were selected to represent Singapore in the ChinaWestern Mathematics Invitational Olympiad held in Inner Mongolia,Hohhot. A total of 144 participants from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and

    Singapore took part. Liu Yijia (2M) topped the entire competition whileSheldon Tan (2M) came in 16th with a silver medal. David Lin Kewei (3C)and Teh Jiun Harn (4L) clinched silver medals, finishing in 20th and 29threspectively.

    11 October NEA-Panasonic Eco-Ideas Challenge 2012Rafflesians took home the grand prize of a five-day study trip to Japan aswell as the second prize of $4000 (which would go towards RIsenvironmental causes):

    Grand Prize: Chung Ray Ern, Hari Narayana Kope, Jo-Adam Saiful Mirza,Ng Yu Song, and Jonathan Chua En Zhe (all from 2L)

    Second Prize: Chua Yu Jing Jonathan, Song Lizhi, Tay Zhi Yu Ernest, TristenZheng Junlei, and Tan Rui Xuan (all from 2G)

    24 October GIC Young Leaders Award 2012Loo Tien Pan (13S06E) and Amanda Choo Min Hui (13S03P) were awardedthe GIC Young Leaders Award 2012. The award recognises students withleadership potential and sterling grades, and who serve their school andthe community. Tien Pan is the Chairperson of Raffles Economics andCurrent Affairs Society and a member of the Red Cross Youth, whileAmanda is President of Raffles Debate and a member of the Interact Club.

    24 October Australian Mathematics Competition 2012The following students won prizes at the competition organised by theAustralian Mathematics Trust, for students from Year 3-12 in Australia,and their equivalent grades in other countries. :

    Now You Know Competition on CyberwellnessComputer Science Society members - Christabella Irwanto (13S05B), AiyshAkhtar Sheikh (13S06A) and Kevan Tan Tian Jun (13S06N) won the topprize at the Now You Know competition on Cyberwellness organised byGoogle and MDA. The students won an all-expense paid trip to visitGoogle's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

    25th Singapore Physics Olympiad(SPhO)201226 Year 5 Physics Raffles Academy (RA) students represented the school

    and won the Top Institution for SPhO Award. Our students won a total of23 awards seven Golds (out of 10), seven Silvers (out of 15), sevenBronzes (out of 16) and two Honourable Mentions (out of 16). Lin Yongjie(13S06O) also won the Best Overall Individual Performance Award.

    ITF5 G5 & G4 TournamentNg Hao Yuan (13S06M) represented the State in Brunei and Ipoh,Malaysia respectively.

    IODA North American Championships 2012 (Sailing)Samuel Neo (1C) and Koh Yi Kun (1A) represented Singapore in Valle DeBravo, Mexico.

    19 October Jonathan Yeo wins TNP School Sports Star AwardRafflesian sailor Jonathan Yeo (4J) was awarded The New Paper's SchoolSports Star Award which celebrates the best student athletes in the localsports scene and recognises good sportsmanship. Earlier in the year,Jonathan won the title in the Byte Class (B Div) Sailing competition in the2012 National Inter-School Sports Championship despite sustaining aserious spinal injury.

    World Junior Championships 2012 (Badminton)Ryan Ng Zin Rei (2A) took part in the competition in Chiba, Japan.

    International Softball Federation Ix Junior Mens WorldChampionship 2012Six Rafflesians were selected to represent Singapore Parana, Argentina:

    Andrew Tan Wei-Kang (3A), Joshua Tam Jun Wen Toshifumi (3K), EdwardLee Jia Yao (3W), Ye Zi An (3V), Thiviya Kumaran s/o Rajappan (4A), andShamus John Lee Kuan Wen (4J).

    Kuala Lumpur Open Championships 2012 (Squash)Four Rafflesians represented Singapore to take part in the competition:

    Leong Yew Sing Timothy (4E), Rayden Tan Keng Wai (3V), Tan Ijoe (1F)and Kevin Tong Weng Jin (1M).

    IAAF World Youth ChampionshipsRafflesian hurdler Ang Ding Hui won a spot on the IAAF World YouthChampionships to be held in Donetsk, Ukraine in 2013. TheChampionships is a global athletics event organised biennially by theInternational Association of Athletics Federations for competitors aged 17and below.

    Presidents' Scout AwardRafflesians Li Yiming (12S06D), Ng Zheng Han Ernest Clement (12S06I) andWong Kwang IK (12S06E) were presented with the prestigious President'sScout Award at the Istana from Singapore's Chief Scout, His ExcellencyPresident Tony Tan. The Presidents' Scout Award is presented to ournation's most outstanding Venture Scouts in recognition of their excellent

    leadership and personal performance, their dedication to the Scoutmovement and their service to the community.

    October MOE S7 Cluster Visual Arts Award

    Shen Yu Jun (2Q) was awarded a Gold award.

    Music Elective Programme/ Raffles Academy (Music) OverseasPerformance at Opening Festival of Bramall Music Building,Birmingham University (UK)Students performed a repertoire of contemporary works includingalumnus Joyce Kohs IX Lives of a Cat.

    12December

    Singapore National Chinese Music CompetitionYear 4 Raffles Academy (Music) student Nicholas Quek Wei Sheng (4D)won 1st prize in the Guzheng (Youth Category) at the 2012 SingaporeNational Chinese Music Competition. Nicholas had earlier won firstprize in the Amateur Youth Category of the Tong Yan CupInternational Zheng Art Week festival in Harbin.

    7 - 16December

    Raffles Voices wins Grand Prix in EuropeTo celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Raffles Voices, thechoir embarked on a trip to Poland and Lithuania, competing in twofestivals with a total of 10 songs.

    3rd Krakow Advent & Christmas Choir Festival (7 9 December, Poland)Students performed at the St Paul and St Peter's Church in Krakow,garnering two gold diplomas in the Youth and Chamber categories andreceived the 2nd highest score.

    20th International Choir Festival of Sacred, Advent and Christmas Music,(13-16 December, Kaunas, Lithuania)The choir was awarded a special jury Prize for the Most ExpressiveChoir, the Audience Prize and the Gold Diploma for the highest score ofthe day.

    ACTIVITIES & EVENTS AROUND SCHOOL

    October

    Adventure Leadership Programme (ALPs) Training Camp

    34 students and four teachers participated in a three-day two-nighttraining camp at the MOE Labrador Adventure Centre to prepare themfor the ALPs trekking expedition at the Alpine National Park inAustralia. Activities included tent pitching, outdoor cooking, navigationand a long training hike.

    15 October Mega Mugging MadnessYear 6 students studying for the A-Level examinations were treated tobuffet spreads whipped up by the Raffles Parents' Association (RPA)from 15 25 October. This is the fifth time the RPA has organised themuch-anticipated annual event that saw Year 6 Rafflesians helpingthemselves a lovingly cooked (and served) meal by the parents for just

    one dollar per student.

    18 October Madam Gertrude Marsh visits RIMdm Gertrude Marsh and her husband Mr rnulf Norgrds visit to theRI's Heritage Centre and Looi Eng San Memorial Garden was a poignanttrip as Mdm Marsh is the widow of the late Mr Looi Eng San, an RIalumnus who was a prominent agronomist and botanist. The Gardenand the Heritage Centre are slated to be revamped in 2013, in light ofRI's 190th Founder's Day. Mdm Marsh provided suggestions on how theGarden should be developed to make space for more functional use,and to offer students and staff of RI something for today, tomorrowand the years after.

    29 October Deepavali CelebrationsAn exhibition and food fair was organised by the members of theIndian Cultural Club to celebrate Deepavali.

    10 November Malay Cultural Day CampOrganised by the Malay Cultural Club for students taking MalayLanguage from Year 1-3, the camp sought to promote Malay culture aswell as develop its student leaders leadership and organisational skills.Students participated in a series of cultural activities which includedcultural games like the Gasing Competition to build team rapport, and

    the camp culminated in a cultural food festival in the evening.

    Council Retreat 2012The Council retreat was held in Singapore (instead of the usual overseasretreat), with students staying at RI Boarding. Student leaders wereengaged in various activities to help develop salient learning pointssuch as focus, communication and self-awareness.

    E W Barker Institute of Sports Auckland University ofTechnology (EWBIS AUT) Sports Research program30 Students and three Teachers undertook a one week in-campusprogramme with AUT as a component of the EWBIS Sports ScienceResearch Programme. The trip enabled students to understand andexplore possible options to pursue further studies, or consider careers insports research, sports science and medicine, sports education andadministration and sports coaching.

    6 December Grad Night 2012The Class of 2012 celebrated the end of their pre-university education(and end of the A Level examinations) at the Orchard Hotel. ThemedFilm Noir style, the event saw a host of special performances, plenty ofphoto-taking, reminiscing key batch milestones, and the muchanticipated pageant contest to crown the prom king and queen.
