These days are pupil free and allow staff to engage in valuable whole school professional learning workshops and planning activities. Two days at the start and one day the end of each year are fixed. The remaining four days can be used any time throughout the year with the endorsement of the School Council. Last year‟s School Council endorsed the school‟s plan to schedule this year‟s School Development Days on a Tuesday instead of the traditional Monday. The reasons for this change was that many of the professional learning providers are heavily booked on Mondays (working with other schools) and the majority of Takari staff are rostered to work on a Tuesday. This worked well in terms one and two when the School Development Days followed a Monday holiday, effectively giving families an extra long weekend. Having the School Development Day‟s „mid week‟ in terms three and four may have been an issue for some families. The school is currently planning School Development Days for next year and will be seeking endorsement from the School Council at the next meeting in week seven. We are keen to receive parent feedback on how the new Tuesday School Development Days worked for families. They worked well for the staff, but we would also like to hear from you. Feedback can be provide to any of your School Council representatives or emailed directly to the school at [email protected]. All feedback will be presented at the next School Council meeting. We look forward to hearing your feedback. David Tennant SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY: Yesterday was the School Development Day. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: All schools have seven designated School Development Days throughout the year.

YR 1/2 ASSEMBLY AND PARENT CAFÉ Mrs Lodwick and Mrs Stark‟s Yr 1/2 class will be presenting their assembly tomorrow, commencing at 9.00am. Don‟t miss out on what should be a very entertaining assembly. And then stay behind for the parent café in the staffroom. What is the Parent Café? Takari School Council Update

Open Meeting: Last week we held the first open meeting of the School Council. A big thank you to all the wonderful staff and parents who

attended. It was an encouragement to the whole council to share the afternoon with you. I hope you all enjoyed the refreshments at the end . The council business on the day was quite quick as we refined and approved the following : Crunch & Sip, School Uniform and Sun Smart Policies.

Additionally we looked through the booklists for next year. To the parents and teachers that provided feedback, thank you. Two Important things to know:

1. Our P&C has done an AWESOME job this year. They have managed to run many events and have raised more funds than some schools more than twice our size. This is such a good way to help our school and if you see Katja or one of the other P&C members, please say thanks.

2. The NAPLAN results this year for Takari are very good. The staff have clearly worked hard with our children and should, rightly, be pleased with the results.

Independent Public School: As you will all know, we are working towards next year and applying to become an Independent Public School (IPS). With

this change comes some real benefits, but takes a bit of work. If you are interested in knowing more or being a part of this process please come and see any one of us, as we would be grateful for the support.

Cheers and have a wonderful Term 4. Spring is here and the weather is warming, but not hot yet. Enjoy! Brad Butler Takari PS Council Chair

GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN ENTERING YEAR 7 IN 2018: Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Programs provide challenging and highly motivating learning opportunities for children with exceptional academic skills and creative talent. These Academic, Arts and Languages programs are taught by teachers with expert skills and knowledge. Programs are available at 18 select public secondary schools, including Takari‟s local feeder high school, Balcatta SHS. Balcatta SHS is holding a Gifted and Talented information session on Thursday 2 February 2017. A note regarding this informat ion session has been distributed to all current Yr 5 students. If you can‟t wait until next year to find out more about the Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Programs, visit the DoE website www.education.wa.edu.au/giftedandtalented KISS AND DRIVE: The “Kiss and Drive” bays at the front of the school are not being used correctly. The first four bays on Rickman Street should only be used to drop off and pick up children while you are still in the car. There is also a two minute limit with these bays. Parents parking and leaving their cars for more than two minutes risk a fine. Again, there is ample parking available in the two car parks across Jones Street. CROSSWALK NEWS: Wally has not yet returned to work, and we have been notified that a relief crosswalk person will not always be available. We urge you to constantly remind your children to remain vigilant when crossing the road, both before and after school. Unfortunately, school staff are not permitted to stop or direct traffic.

JUMP JAM: Mr Patterson is running JUMP JAM every Thursday morning from 8:15 to 8:30am. If you feel like having a dance and getting fit, please come down to the undercover area to participate. The JUMP JAM aerobic program is designed to challenge fundamental movement skills, increase fitness, develop student leadership & motivate students to move and enjoy exercise. JUMP JAM is a fusion of dance & fitness disciplines along with cultural interpretations that capture the look, attitude, posture and elements of Aerobics and Fitness. KINDY AND PRE-PRIMARY: The Kindy and Pre–Primary have many exciting things currently going on in the classroom. Miss Coad, Miss Dumont and Mrs Andrews have requested if any parents of these classes have some free time, they are most welcome to volunteer their time to assist with some classroom fun! Please see the teachers for further details. NOT RETURNING TO TAKARI NEXT YEAR?: The school is well into planning the classes and staffing for next year. It is important the school has accurate information. Could parents please contact and inform the school if their children will not be returning to Takari next year. Thank you for your assistance. ATTENDANCE: Thank you to all the parents who have completed and returned the attendance letters from last fortnight. Attendance letters have been distributed with this newsletter. Once again, we would appreciate it if you could complete and return so we can amend our records to keep in line with the Departmental Attendance Policy. We must follow up unexplained school

absences.

CRUNCH & SIP is a good opportunity for children to stay hydrated as they lose fluid when being active, especially over the summer months. Over the warmer months, a cold drink bottle is ideal for hydration but also keeps lunchbox food items cool. For the crunch:

All fresh vegetables are permitted (e.g. celery, carrot sticks, broccoli bits etc.)

All fresh fruit (e.g. whole fruits, chopped melon etc.)
