From the Preface: My intention in· writing this book has been to produce anintroduction to linguistics as an academic subject, that will becomprehensible and useful to the student entering on the studyof linguistics at a university in work for a first degree or a post-graduate degree or diploma, and at the same time will serveto present the subject in outline to the intelligent general readeras one that is both important and interesting in its own right.
