Letter from Jeff What an incredible season of ministry here at Rolling Hills! Our God is truly alive and moving, and it is exciting to be a part of what He is doing. Every Sunday morning, God challenges us and speaks to us through worship and His Word. We are seeing many people join God’s work here through Partnership Classes as well as following Christ in believer’s baptism. There is a real sense of God’s presence, and we all are blessed to a part of His story. This is the time for all of us to continue to give our best for His glory! The new church year brings so much excitement. We have brand new Small Groups beginning, and I want to encourage each of you to be part of one. You will grow deeper in your faith and develop amazing friendships through biblical community. In addition, there are great things happening with our preschool, children and students! Our new children’s space (Main Street Kids) opens Sunday, September 30. This will allow us to minister and reach even more children and families for Christ! God is working through His church both here in our community in Middle Tennessee as well as around the world. Through the nonprofit we started about four years ago (Justice and Mercy International), we have the opportunity to impact the world for Christ. From precious orphan children in Moldova to kids in poverty in South Africa and Brazil, God has called us to make a di!erence in the lives of others. By now, you should have received a brochure in the mail about JMI’s Capital Campaign. Please pray about giving a one-time gift, over and above your tithe to your church, to invest in the least, the last, the lost. October is a huge month of missions here at Rolling Hills, so let’s invest together! Church, we are seeing God do miracles. It is amazing to see what can happen when we all join together to give our best for His glory. It is a joy and privilege for me to pray for you and walk with you through life. We all need each other. In life there are great times and there are hard times. However, through it all, our God is faithful! Hear this verse from our “One” series: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every

morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-23). Hold on to this truth! God loves you, and He is faithful! The best is yet to be…

My family visited Rolling Hills in September of last year. Upon our first visit we were very impressed by the children’s ministry, the poignant sermon and the fabulous worship and arts ministry. While those things are all necessary to help us along our spiritual journey, Justin and I felt very strongly that we needed to find a church home that supports small groups. We have found in our walk with Christ that small groups are where we form deep relationships and truly love our neighbors as Christ commanded us to do. The small group ministry at RHCC is so well organized so it was easy for us to find a group that fit with our age, our daughter’s age and a time that worked for us. Since joining the small group, we have made friends with whom we can share our joys, sorrows and struggles. We feel connected with the larger church because we have those close relationships. We know from scripture that God created mankind for relationship. From the creation of man in the garden to the ministry of Christ, we see a God who intentionally reaches down man to have relationship with Him. There is simply a void in our lives when we live a solitary existence because He created us for community. Small group time is when we can truly drop the mask and

be real. Yes, everyone’s life is messy and somehow I find solace knowing that others share my struggles and heartaches. We all lead busy lives with work and family obligations, but I have found that the time invested in small groups pays huge dividends!

All Small Groups are brand new this fall, so it is the perfect time to jump-in. Information can be found on the Rolling Hills Web site and Laura Chapman and Brent Hutchinson would be glad to help you find the best spot for you, too!

Communitas is the very spirit of community, and is Rolling Hills’s new training school for those interested in growing much deeper in their faith and in how they do ministry. Participants will look at four key areas: personal and community spiritual formation, gospel-centered hermeneutics, missions, and leadership for the twenty-first century, as they learn how they fit into God’s plan for serving his kingdom. Communitas participants will meet every Tuesday night for study,

projects, and reflection, will go on an international mission trip at the end of their first year, and will suit up with a coach for year two. Those interested in serving in full time vocational ministry, church planting, or international missions are encouraged to be a part. Is it a commitment? Yes. Is it worth it? You bet! Our utmost for His highest…can’t wait to see how this develops!

This FallFORT returned to NAVIGATE the Bible on September 5. Every year at school, kids memorize spelling words, multiplication tables, and historic dates. They learn to read, write, spell, add, subtract, and solve problems. Those are skills in life that they’ll use forever, but one more important is missing. The secret to real success in life and spiritual growth is knowing God’s word. At FORT: Navigate, kids will learn the books and major divisions of the Bible. They’ll memorize verses and learn to find them more easily. They’ll learn authors and key characters too. It will build on the lessons they learned last fall for repeat kids and introduce foundational truths to kids who come to FORT for the first time. Registration is open online. Fall Fort runs September 5 – October 17. October 24 is our Family Worship Experience (FX) where we showcase what kids are learning at RH, so mark your calendars and plan to attend!

We had an amazing time this Summer as we took our annual VBS experience into our surrounding communities with our Backyard Kids Clubs. More than 300 children participated throughout the week as we learned Bible verses, played games, created crafts and had an all around great time getting to know one another and our Creator better. The concept behind hosting these clubs in neighborhoods was to get our neighbors and people in our communities involved as well. And it was great to meet more than 100 new faces throughout the week as a result of us being in their community. A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped teach and facilitate the clubs and to the host homes who opened their doors and provided us a way to share the gospel with their community.

New This Fall in College Ministryby Matt Robertson

The Rolling Hills College Ministry is gearing up for a great Fall Semester! First o!, we will be welcoming our new intern, Ryan Russell! Ryan is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas where he grew up. He graduated with a degree in Travel and Tourism and has been a college ministry intern at his home church for the past couple of years. Ryan says, “I love to travel, it is my absolute favorite thing to do. I also love cooking, eating, watching reality television and playing board games. I also have a new found love for Croquet.” We are excited that Ryan will be serving with RHCC this upcoming year! You can welcome Ryan yourself by emailing [email protected]. The Rolling Hills College Ministry will be focusing on students connecting with the community of RHCC this year. We will be accomplishing this by encouraging students to attend worship on a regular basis, plug into a Small Group each week, serving with others through Saturday Serve or other mission projects, being a part of our mentorship program, and by hanging out and having fun with the group at our di!erent events each month. We want college students to know that they can call Rolling Hills their church home and that they are an important part of our ministry. We want to nourish them in their faith and encourage them to reach out, grow up, and give all. If you know a college student or someone that is college-aged then please encourage them to jump in and be a part of what’s going on this fall in the Rolling Hills College Ministry. If you’re a college student then make a decision now to be a part of the community at Rolling Hills through the College ministry. You have such an amazing opportunity at this point in your life to learn and grow closer to God through all the di!erent things available to you at RHCC. Please check out the calendar on our website or visit the RH College Ministry Blog today.

Move In There’s this amazing migration that takes for families with college bound young adults every August and it’s called “Move In Day.” For a few weeks starting in mid-August every year, college students and their families load up every nook and cranny of their vehicles with all the amazing, cool, new things they found at Wal-mart or Target and they make the trek from their home where they grew up to the residence hall where they are going to live for the next year. For many, this is a frightening experience. Students don’t really know what to expect and parents sometimes don’t want to leave their son or daughter alone to experience the new world they are entering. This year we were able to help ease that fear and make the transition a little bit smoother by being there to help unload those overstu!ed vehicles for them. We met Belmont students and parents at the curb as they checked-in and helped unload their boxes, suitcases, refrigerators, couches, golf clubs, guitars, lamps, and bags full of snacks from their cars. It’s simple...we welcomed them with a friendly hello and told them not to worry about their things. Those from Rolling Hills that were able to help met hundreds of people from so many di!erent places. We made the day a little bit easier for both students and their parents while being able to tell a little about Rolling Hills and the amazing community of Believers we have for everyone...including college students!

Summer NightsSummer Nights is an event for completed 5th grade-8th grade in late July. Every night students and leaders came supporting their team color and the competitiveness was at an all time high. From team chants to colorful capes, team spirit carried through the week. One highlight of the week was messy games. Only in Student Ministry do you get to bob for bubble gum, crawl through grape jelly-mustard-ketchup-relish, and slide down a giant slip & slide that has been lathered with baby shampoo. This event is great for building relationships and studying God’s word. This year our theme was “Becoming.” Students are in yet another school year and our hope and prayer is that they are becoming who God has created them for. Instead of finding identity in a people group, sport, or cultural icon, we taught them about embracing their identity in Christ.

FUSION @ DOCK: Sunday Mornings @ 11am (come 15 minutes early to hangout)Fusion is our Sunday morning experience to help students find a connection point into Student Ministry. Sunday morning is master teacher driven bible study with gender and age specific discussion tables with a small group leader. Throughout the year we will cover 3 categories: theology, text, and life application. ENGAGE @ DOCK: Wednesday Nights @ 6pm-7:30pm Every Wednesday night throughout the school year we have a weekly worship gathering geared specifically for teens. The environment is filled with high energy, fun games, relevant Bible teaching, student led worship, and discussion groups for all middle and high school students. FLYTE: Sunday Mornings @ 9:30, 5th and 6th grade only On Sunday mornings we have a small group and large group learning environments specifically for preteens. The goal for FLYTE is to prepare preteens for their teenage years get them excited about studying God’s Word by taking on the tough issues. Paint Rave, September 28: Last September we had over 200 students from all over the Franklin area to come participate in a Paint Rave. We have created a fun and safe outreach event that allows our students to invite their friend to an informal church event where we can begin to build relationships with teens. Our prayer is that God will continue to use this event as a way for us to engage the culture with the message of Christ. This year we are hoping for over 300 students. D-NOW, October 12-14: DNOW is a weekend retreat that takes place in-town. Students are assigned to Host Homes (partners of Rolling Hills) where they stay dur-ing the weekend of the event. Each host home is assigned an adult who will lead Bible studies for that particular group. DiscipleNow is a focused time of Bible study that help focus students on taking their “next step” in their relationship with God. DNOW also provides great opportunities for worship, recreation, hanging out with friends, lots of food, and fun. Each hour is unique so that kids can be present for both hours and get the best of both worlds. Our 9:30am large group worship celebration introduces the lesson of the week in a fun, interactive, creative way. There is music, live drama, storytelling, games, and more. It’s all designed to teach a lesson from God’s word that helps kids learn to trust God, make wise choices, and treat others well. Our 11am small groups provide kids with grade level activities that drive the large group lesson home. Kids who only attend one hour will still get the best of what RH kids has to o!er in that setting, while kids who attend both enjoy the fuller picture of worship and discipleship in the life of the church. Parents, if you want your kids to experience both options each week, consider worshipping one hour and serving one hour. There are tons of ways to get involved on Sundays and since serving only enhances your own experience with God, jump in today. Email Laura Chapman ([email protected]) for great options to begin serving.

KentuckyMission Trip Few things will bring momentum to your spiritual growth and connect you to the life of a church more quickly, than serving in missions. This October, you have an opportunity to travel with us to eastern Kentucky to do just that! While in Kentucky we serve in Leslie County, which is consequently one of the poorest counties in the entire country. Our work includes a variety of ministries ranging from construction on homes of elderly residents in the community, working with children through day camps and after school programs and volunteering with food and clothing distribution to those in need. Our ministry partner, Big Creek Missions, serves the area year round and seeks to connect churches like ours to needs in the Appalachian Mountains. This trip falls over the fall break of the Williamson County School system and families are welcome to join this trip. In addition, this trip also provides a unique cultural

experience as you will get to worship in local churches, better understand the Appalachian area and see and feel many of the obstacles people in this area face. The total cost of the trip is $200, due by October 7th and a $100 deposit is due immediately. The trip cost covers housing, transportation, most meals and ministry supplies. If you are interested in participating please contact Jason Hale or visit the RHCC webpage for more information.

Franklin Estates Path ProjectBeing involved on a consistent, long term basis is a key to seeing lasting change in a community. We are being a part of this type of work in the community of Franklin Estates. This summer provided us opportunities to host kids clubs and backyard programs while meeting parents and families. While serving, it became evident that our involvement in the area needed to continue and grow. As a result the Path Project is being implemented in Franklin Estates. The Path Project exists to help kids find the right path in life. The Path Project provides after-school homework help for elementary aged kids, as well as activities & games. The after school program is for elementary aged kids: K-5th Grade and kids will have an opportunity to work on and receive help with their homework as well as play games and participate in activities. If you are interested in volunteering, join us any Tuesday from 4:00-5:30 at the Franklin Estates clubhouse located at 700 West Meade Blvd. Any and all ages of volunteers are welcome!

Feed My Starving ChildrenApproximately 18,000 children die a day from hunger and hunger related disease (UNICEF). On Saturday October 13, we invite you to join us in being a part of the hunger solution through a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event. Through this powerful event, we can impact the lives of thousands of children. Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. On October 13, over 100,000 meals will be packed by volunteers! Your help is needed. To learn more about Feed My Starving Children or to sign up to volunteer to serve at the packing event, visit the RHCC Website.

Serve

Saturday ServeSaturday Serve continues to be a great opportunity for you, your friends and family to serve here in our own community. What does a day at Saturday Serve look like? Saturday Serve starts with a little kick-o! celebration at the warehouse and is followed by 2.5 hours of serving with local ministries, organizations or Rolling Hills outreach ministries. Depending on the specific work we are doing, you will be placed with other participants and a team leader who has directions and supplies for your serving opportunity. Your team will consist of 6-15 other people, which also provides a great opportunity to connect with others on a more personal level. Saturday Serve is open for any and all ages, including preschool, as age appropriate opportunities are present each Saturday. You can pre-register for Saturday Serve through the RHCC website and if you pre-register you will be given your assignment prior to arriving. However, you are more than welcome to walk-up that morning! Pre-registration is suggested for those with younger children as you will be given specifics on what to be prepared for, dress, locations, etc. We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to go out and make a di!erence here in Franklin and the surrounding areas. Each Saturday Serve is from 9:00-Noon and the Fall/Winter dates are: September 8, November 10 January 12 & March 9.

As many who will read this know, Claudia and I were privileged with the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Cape Town, South Africa last February with Rolling Hills. At the time we had been dating for about a year. We both knew we wanted to serve the Lord in the mission field and felt strongly that the Lord had led us to this amazing place and these beautiful people for a reason, so on a beach in South Africa with the town of Red Hills in the distance, I asked Claudia to marry me… and she said yes! We were married on September 15 in front of family and friends and are moving this October to serve for three years with Living Hope, our partner organization in Red Hill. I can't think of a better way to start our marriage! I will be helping launch a new Numeracy Program where I'll create curriculum and train local volunteers as they tutor children and teens from the area in mathematics. Claudia will work with Life Skills Educators in developing materials for childhood development in addition to creating leadership development strategies for future Life Skills Educators. In the afternoons, we will come together in Red Hill to conduct Teens and Kids Clubs where children will learn about hygiene and healthy eating habits in addition to sharing the Word of God with them. We are so excited to see how God will use us in this next phase of our lives and ask that you keep us in your prayers as we start our marriage and our ministry together. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you through our blog (nathanandclaudia.blogspot.com)!

By Mitch Canter (Moldova Missions Team, Summer 2012)

I’m what you would call a “Moldova Newbie” – This was my first time to Moldova, and I jumped in with both feet. I want to be brutally honest with you: Before I got to Moldova, I was feeling completely out of my comfort zone. The orphanage in Costesi (one of the orphanages we traveled to during the week), has been labeled as an orphanage for children with special needs. I’ve never really been around kids with special needs, and having a language barrier made me even more nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. And then we got there, and my whole paradigm was shifted. God moved me, plain and simple, to a point where I am now comfortable being outside of my comfort zone. Sounds weird, doesn’t it. A little background: There are about 25 kids at the Costesi orphanage (an orphange that has never had interaction with American missionaries). Most of the kids there have either a physical or mental illness, with a few of them having more severe symptoms. But they’re just like any other kids – they play, they run, they dance, and they crave the attention and love that all kids do. God tells us that “Whatever you do to the least of these, you do to me”. That verse had been tumbling in my head over and over that week, because that’s how I saw the kids at Internat 2. The kids there are what I consider the “least OF THE LEAST of these” – these are kids who have nowhere else to turn, and they’ve opened a new place in my heart for a group of some of the most wonderful kids I’ve ever met. I could give you specific examples. I could tell you about Nikolai, who has been abandoned not once, but twice, speaks better english that I do at times, and loves to play soccer. I could tell you about Vlada, Dana, Nastia, and Gabriella; four sisters who are all surviving orphanage life together. I could even tell you about Costica, who (despite his disability) could light up a room with his smile and personality.d The fact is, God has shown me that being outside of my comfort zone is the only way we grow. If you don’t stretch, you become stagnant. So, here I sit, still outside of my comfort zone. But don’t worry or be anxious for me. I’m starting to really like it here.

Moldova Summer Camps

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Rudy.” “Rudy” is based on the life of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, an undersized kid growing up in a steel town with a huge heart and preposterous dream of playing football for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame University. There are some unforgettable moments in that film for me…moments that translate into something very important for the orphaned children of Moldova, the impoverished children of Red Hill, South Africa, and the anonymous children in the jungles of Brazil. One of those memorable moments is a scene in which Coach Dan Devine has his team gathered around him in the locker room for their pre-game pep talk before taking the field. It is that time before every game when the pressurized, nervous energy of a team is quickly approaching boil. With unequivocal determination etched on his face, Coach Devine looks his kneeling warriors in the eye and pronounces, “No one…and I mean no one…comes into OUR HOUSE and pushes us around!” It is with that same unbridled resolve that JMI announces our intention to raise money for a transitional living home in Moldova that we will own and put to use to prevent the tra"cking of young women and the criminalization of young men. “Not in our house!” is our response to the sex predators who, by one estimate, have enslaved up to 450,000 Moldovan girls in modern times. “Not in our house” is our line in the sand around the village of Red Hill…our pledge that we will give so that those children will have the benefit of a Life Skills Educator to guide them into a future other than hunger, disease and illiteracy. Not in our house” is our word and our bond to the children of an obscure Brazilian jungle village who, because of the school we will raise, will never again risk their lives just to get to school. In order to provide these grace-full benefits, the JMI family is challenged to raise $450,000 by Oct. 7th. Our campaign theme is MAKE JUSTICE PERSONAL. And when you think about it, unless we are willing to make justice personal for the least, the last and the lost, what lasting value do we bring to God’s Kingdom? To make your justice personal, find the enclosed Commitment Card and indicate any and all of the ways you will join us in making your love a legacy!

Joy is a core value here at Rolling Hills and we take every opportunity to express it. One event that always brings smalls to faces and joys to hearts (and stomaches) is our annual Church n' Chicken. We got together for a great afternoon of fellowship while enjoying great food and Titans football on the Auditorium big screens. This event coincided with the kicko! for our Small Groups and was a great opportunity for people from di!erent neighborhoods to make connections with one another. We want to say a special "thank you" to everyone who participated and helped make this event special.

The Rolling Hills Internship is designed for those who are

pursuing the idea of ministry...looking at the possibility

that God may have this in store for their lives down the

road in a more permanent way. Their ministry is supervised

by the RH Sta! which allows these young adults to gain

experience through hands-on leadership opportunities. So

if you see one of these smiling faces around church, take

a moment to get to know them. Send an encouraging

e-mail. Take them out to lunch. Show them how much

you appreciate them and what God is using them to do at

Rolling Hills. We are so blessed to have such an amazing

group of servant-hearted interns!

Rolling Hills InternsEach year we are blessed here at Rolling Hills to work

alongside a group of interns that are not only eager to

learn about ministry, but bring an energy to the o"ce

that is di"cult to explain. This year is no exception as we

welcome back a few from last year and accept new faces

with open arms. This year, our intern team has grown to

13 young adults who serve in various ministry positions

all over RHCC, including preschool, kids, youth, college,

communications, local missions and worship arts. They put

in countless hours every week prepping for Bible studies,

small groups, weekly activities, Sunday mornings and so

much more.

Women’s Ministry

An Evening with Esther Burroughs, Thursday, November 1 All women of Rolling Hills are invited to join us for an Evening with Esther Burroughs on Thursday, November 1 at 7 PM at The WareHouse. Esther has a holy calling as she travels, encouraging women and families of all ages with God’s Word and lessons on life’s journey. “My heart’s passion is calling women to an intimate walk as His beloved child. Out of the overflow of God’s love in my heart, the Word of God in my life, and the Spirit’s power, I am compelled to leave a legacy of faithfulness in His family, His community, and His world.” She and her husband Bob, for 50+ years, live in South Carolina. This will be a great evening of spiritual enrichment that you don’t want to miss! Tickets can be purchased on the Rolling Hills Web site.
