MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Remember writing your first college paper? Mine was great, or so I thought. When the professor handed our first drafts back, there was a large REWRITE across the top. As frustrated as I was, the rewrite really was better and much more successful. How many of us might like to rewrite a part of our life? The women that come to The Haven of Grace may not be thinking of rewriting their life but rather

surviving it. And here at The Haven we are blessed with passionate staff and volunteers who can not only help these young, pregnant women survive, but thrive.

This past year was full of wonderful moments of women attempting to rewrite their story and getting their families on a new path to a better life. The women engaged in education with a YMCA literacy program, training from Nurses for Newborns and other life skills classes. Most of our residents were employed or gained employment during their time at The Haven. For those who didn’t have a high school diploma, they were enrolled in GED classes.

As we transition women to stable housing, one family at a time, there are still more waiting for help. The Haven of Grace is here to assist. We encourage our community to join us, whether by volunteering time, giving financially or helping us make connections to others. All of us can be a part of each woman’s journey as she rewrites her own story.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Poverty’s story sometimes has simple beginnings – a young woman finds herself pregnant, loses her job and then can’t pay her rent so is evicted. Now she’s scared, homeless and pregnant. Here at The Haven of Grace our mission is to help each mother rewrite her story and provide a brighter future for her and her child.

The Haven of Grace is unique in its ability to serve the needs of these specific women who come from as many as ten different zip codes. We receive up to ten phone calls a day from the Housing Crisis Hotline, other agencies, and individuals who are hungry, homeless and pregnant. This past year we saw 36 women and 32 children in our Maternity Shelter and Quad (transitional apartments).

We continue to provide support to more than 49 women and 99 children who are part of our Aftercare family – those who have spent time at The Haven and have now moved on to stable housing.

The story continues, however, and every few months a new face comes to The Haven looking for a fresh start for herself and her unborn child. Our staff is always ready to provide the resources and home-like environment for these tired faces. This upcoming year will bring new resources to our programming, giving the women of The Haven an even stronger foundation from which to rewrite their story.

IMAGINE BEING PREGNANT AND ALONE.

Imagine having no one to turn to and no where to go when you need help the most. 8% of surveyed homeless women under age 50 report that they are pregnant. Serving women who are young, pregnant and homeless, The Haven of Grace provides a safe, nurturing home, educational programs, and long-term support for mother and child. With your support, we provide vulnerable young families with healthy foods, safe shelter and basic needs like clothing and baby supplies and help mothers reach their goals of stability and self-efficiency. Together, we provide resources that help women in need help themselves. The Haven of Grace is not only a hand-out, but a hand-up.

MATERNITY SHELTER

The Haven provides food, shelter, and basic needs for homeless, pregnant women and their children. Our Maternity Shelter not only gives young mothers a safe, nuturing home, but it gives them a place to participate in required parenting classes, as well as goal planning and educational programs in hopes that they gain the knowledge and skills to live independently and provide for their new family. The Haven staff offers around the clock guidance and support, as these women work towards stability and self-sufficiency.

QUAD LIVING

The Quad, our transitional apartments for mothers who

graduate from our Maternity Shelter, provides an opportunity for mothers to practice independent living skills while working and/or going to school. Quad Living is a critical time in a young mothers life, as they continue to advance their personal and professional goals, but cannot quite live and thrive out on their own. Our young mothers work to build a strong foundation for their move back into the community.

AFTER CARE

The 10-Year After Care Program is designed to support our mothers after they leave The Haven and move into the

community with their new family. We provide assistance and invest in resources that continue to help secure brighter futures for the young women and children we serve. We too can celebrate with the mothers when their journey towards independence becomes a reality.

TYKESEA#OneMomsStory

Before coming to The Haven to have her beautiful baby girl, Tykesea was bouncing from shelter to shelter. When she became pregnant she had no where else to turn. For Tykesea, The Haven of Grace was truly a blessing. She needed somewhere to go that would provide her with the means to raise her baby and the resources to one day be able to provide for family. As a current Maternity Shelter resident, Tykesea enjoys attending parenting classes and interacting with the other residents as they learn coping skills and move towards independence.

ASHLEY#MomSuccessStory

Ashley came to The Haven eight months pregnant and full of determination to create a better future for her child. She turned to The Haven staff, where she found motivation, support, and a variety of resources. Ashley is currently working full time, continuing her education, and taking care of her baby boy. With the help of The Haven, Ashley has big plans for the future. Her dream is to become a neonatal nurse and give back to the community, while sharing her love for children and helping those who need it the most.

SHAINA#IndependentMomStory

Shaina became a mother right out of high school, and moved into The Haven looking to get away from the dangerous neighborhood and environment she was previously living in. She made the decision to start down a new path; a path towards a life of independence for herself and the proper care for her baby. With resources and support from The Haven staff, Shaina plans to continue her education by enrolling in cosmotology school. She is motivated to work hard towards her dream of full indepdence and hopes to one day own her own salon.

#RewritingTheStory2016The women who come to The Haven of Grace are looking for a fresh start, a different path, a rewrite. They come to The Haven in need. In need of a warm crib to bring their babies home to once they leave the hospital. In need of the support and motivation to achieve their goals and dreams. This is what The Haven of Grace is all about. Rewriting the lives of young, homeless mothers who have no where else to go and no resources to start a family on their own, but who have the determination to succeed.
