Scheme Overview The Employability Points Scheme encourages students, studying at the University of Kent, to engage

with co-curricular activities. For each activity undertaken, students are awarded ‘points’, which can be

redeemed for the chance to apply for rewards offered by external businesses and organisations. This

Rewards Pack will provide an overview for all rewards on offer for the 2017-18 academic year.

How does it work? The Rewards Pack details all the opportunities available through the EP Scheme. Please check each

reward carefully. For all work-based placements, if you are shortlisted, you will be interviewed by a

member of the EP Team and potentially a company representative. Once you have completed your

reward, the points will be redeemed from your total.

Rules You can apply for as many rewards as you like – in fact we recommend that you apply for at

least three rewards - and as a part of this, you will be asked to rank your preferences.

You cannot apply for rewards if you do not have enough points.

You can only apply for three internships per academic year, although you will only be

interviewed for one.

You can only apply for one voucher per academic year. Vouchers are not guaranteed; if

oversubscribed, preference will be given to students unable to undertake work based

rewards and based on the number of points acquired.

You are strongly encouraged to apply for at least 1 non-work-based reward (e.g. company

experience, skills workshop, etc.) This does not need to be your first choice reward.

If you fail to attend an interview, without 48 hours’ notice, we will redeem 50 points from

your points total.

If you do not attend your placement/training without 48 hours’ notice or misbehave whilst

undertaking it, we will redeem double the number of points.

If you are invited to attend an interview, you must dress appropriately. It is very important

that you complete prior research on the company.

Please check the criteria before applying for any position. Not all positions include travel

expenses, please read each opportunity carefully.

We cannot guarantee all students will be rewarded, although we will do our best to ensure

you are offered at least one relevant reward.

Additional Notes Please note that all dates are subject to change and that some companies may be flexible on

dates required for the right candidate.

The University of Kent and the Employability Points team accept no responsibility for the

cancellation of placements due to sponsor commitments.

Sponsors and the EP team reserve the right to cancel placements due to unacceptable

behaviour on the part of the student.

If required, it is your responsibility to arrange accommodation to allow for the completion

of an EP reward.

Payments for project placements are subject to the completion of the project work to the

standards expected and outlined by the sponsoring organisation.

International Students If you are an international student, it is your responsibility to check your ability to work in

the UK in accordance with your visa. If you need assistance with your visa, please speak to

Kent Union.

For paid internships, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have a National

Insurance number. For more information, see here.

Travel Expenses For most work experience placements, and some project and work shadowing placements, the

sponsoring company will provide the reward winner assistance with travel costs (to a certain extent).

The availability of travel costs is confirmed for each reward in the relevant sections of the Rewards

Pack.

If travel costs are not available directly from the sponsoring company, you may be able to claim a

bursary payment from the Careers and Employability Service. To be eligible to apply, you must be a

student at the University of Kent studying in the UK and funds are only available for unpaid work

experience and 1-day insight days (including company experiences). Please note, the allocation of

funds is not guaranteed: funding is limited and is allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis,

following the completion of the bursary application and claims process. It is essential that all

expenses are supported by receipts.

The full Terms and Conditions and application form can be viewed here. For more information

regarding the B-Kew bursary, please contact the Careers and Employability Service via

[email protected]

How to Apply This booklet outlines all of the rewards available to students signed-up to the Employability Points

Scheme for 2017-18. Once you have considered the different rewards, you can apply for rewards via

the application form which will be emailed to you on 21st March 2018. Applications are welcomed

between 21st March and 3rd April 2018, 23:59.

We will ask you to prioritise each reward you apply for and you will be asked to explain why you are

applying for each reward. Please note that we will use this to determine who will be shortlisted for an

interview.

Please check the criteria of each reward carefully. If you apply for a reward and cancel without 48

hours’ notice, we will redeem double the cost of points.

We aim to invite students for interviews by the end of April – please check your emails during this

time. If you are unable to attend an interview, please let us know within 48 hours and we will attempt

to reschedule. It may not be possible to reschedule due to sponsor commitments and we ask that you

are as flexible as possible.

We strongly recommend you look through the whole of this booklet and consider carefully the

different rewards available. Also, look out for the recommendations provided by academic schools!

Get Involved and Get Rewarded!

Opportunities Explained Internship (redeem 200 points)

Internships are temporary work placements within a company. They pay minimum wage, or above, and will

take between 4 weeks and 3 months over the summer vacation period.

Project Placement (redeem 175 points)

Project placements are positions working on a particular project, which may have a flexible start/end date and

will require a certain amount of expertise. Some projects are to be undertaken remotely and you will be paid

for the project, rather than per hour.

Work Experience Placement (redeem 150 points)

Work experience placements are a taster version of a position within a company. They are 2 – 3 weeks in

duration. Students would be expected to undertake work on their own initiative, but would ultimately be

under the supervision of a mentor at all times. Please check individual rewards in regards to travel costs.

Training (redeem 125 points)

A number of companies offer in-house or external training and development of their staff, and in some cases

may even provide training as an external consultant for other companies. These courses are extremely

valuable for students.

Work Shadowing Placement (redeem 100 points)

Work shadowing placements would allow students to ‘buddy’ existing employees within the company to find

out what a ‘day in the life of…’ is really like. In many instances, this is a chance to shadow a senior member of

the sponsoring company!

Mock Assessment Centre (redeem 75 points)

The chance to attend a mock assessment centre, providing students with an insight into the real thing.

Company Experience (redeem 75 points)

An unique experience day, which can involve tours, networking lunches and more!

Skills Development (redeem 75 Points)

Skills development sessions are run by company representatives who have expertise in a particular area or

skill-base.

Employability Session (redeem 50 points)

This gives students the opportunity to get some valuable career advice and guidance into their chosen field,

whilst also having the opportunity to gain CV feedback.

Voucher (redeem 50 points)

A number of students are unable to undertake placements or experiences due to work or family commitments,

lack of accommodation during the summer vacation, or because they are an international student. We,

therefore, offer vouchers to reward them without asking them to commit to a placement. Students can only

claim one voucher and they are limited in quantity.
