• The Continental Army was smaller and less experienced.

• The British Army was bigger and more experienced.

• The French army was decent.

• George Washington, with his military experience, led the Continental Army.

Round 1• “Red” Team received

special orders to prepare.• “Blue” Team did not

prepare.• ½ the “Red” Team did not

play right away. They were away from the field of play.

• The “White” Team was rooting for the “Blue” Team.

Round 1……So What?

• The Red Team was prepared, just like…..

• The Blue Team did NOT prepare, just like…..

• ½ The Red Team did not play right away, just like…..

• The White Team was rooting for the Blue Team, just like…..

• The BRITISH had the best, well trained, professional army.

• The Americans did not have a professional army.

• The British troops/supplies were 3,000 miles away.

• The French supported the Americans with $ and supplies.

Round 2

• Blue Team was offered a prize if they won.

• One student from the Blue Team was given an opportunity to switch to Red, but would not be guaranteed the prize.

Round 2…..So What?

• The Blue Team was offered a prize if they won, just like…..

• One student from the Blue Team was given an opportunity to switch to Red, but would not be guaranteed the prize, just like…..

• The Declaration of Independence increased the motivation for most Americans and offered the ideals of freedom and self-government.

• African Americans wondered whether the equality promised in the Declaration would apply to them. Many doubted it would, and chose to fight with the British. Others hoped they would be treated equally, and chose to fight on the American side.

Round 3• The Blue Team received

a pep-talk. They were encouraged to stay positive even though they were in a difficult situation.

• A second flag was

added that Red needed to capture for the win.

Round 3………So What?

• The Blue Team received a pep-talk, just like…..

• A second flag was added for the Red Team to capture, just like…..

• Thomas Paine’s pamphlet, The Crisis, encouraged the patriots to keep fighting.

• The American victories at Trenton and Princeton showed the British that winning the war would be more difficult than they thought. This also boosted American morale.

Round 4• Blue Team was told they

did not have to capture the flag to win.

• Blue Team was advised that if they could hold on just a little longer help would be on the way.

• One volunteer from the White Team entered the game on the Blue side.

Round 4……….So What?• Blue did not have to

capture a flag to win, just like…..

• Blue was informed that if they held on just as little longer help would be on the way, just like…..

• A volunteer from the White Team joined the Blue Team, just like…..

• George Washington realized he did not have to defeat the British to win the war. He only needed to keep the British from defeating and capturing his army.

• After the American victory at Saratoga, the French promised to become more active allies.

• Several Europeans, such as Lafayette and Von Steuben, volunteered to help the Americans.

Round 5

• A 3rd Flag was added for the Red Team to capture. All 3 flags needed to be captured for victory.

• White Team joined the Blue Team against the Red.

Round 5….So What?• A Third flag was added

for the Red Team to capture. The Red Team had to capture all three flags to win, just like…..

• The White Team joined with the Blue Team against the Red Team, just like…..

• It became more difficult for the British to win because successful hit-and-run attacks used by Americans in the Southern Colonies tired out the British forces.

• France sent troops and naval support to America, which made it extremely difficult on the British.

Round 6• The rule changes made it

virtually impossible for the Red Team to win.

• The Blue Team was declared the winner.

• Red Team handed over their flag and the Blue Team received their prize.

• Blue Team stated they would treat the Red Team members with respect even though they lost.

Round 6…..So What?• The rule changes made it

frustrating and almost impossible for the Red Team to win, just like…..

• The Blue Team was declared the winner, just like…..

• The Red Team handed over their flag and the Blue Team received their prize, just like…..

• The Blue Team stated they would treat the Red Team members with respect even though they lost, just like…..

• After the Battle of Yorktown, British popular support for the war decreased dramatically.

• The Americans won the Revolutionary War.

• The Treaty of Paris ended the War. Britain withdrew their army and officially recognized American independence.

• In the Treaty of Paris, the United States promised that it would not punish the Loyalists by taking away their property.
