REVOLUTIONARY DAIRY CUSTODY TRANSFER MEASUREMENT

American dairies waste millions of dollars annually due to low or no measurement accuracy at milk receiving docks. Fortunately, Invensys has a solution. This solution is currently working in leading dairies, and could save your dairy processing operation $100,000 a year or more.

Acceptable Losses?Every dairy processing plant executive knows—and winces at—the term “shrinkage.” It’s the loss of bottom-line profit caused by factors such as inadequate measurement. A prime shrinkage site is the receiving dock where the custody of raw milk product is transferred from the hauler to the plant.

Exactly how much milk are you buying? Perhaps you rely on the hauler’s dipstick estimate with its inevitable inaccuracies. Or you depend on a weigh scale, and pay for the weight it registers. However, you are often paying for extra truck loading due to dirt, snow, ice, additional surplus poundage, and product that is left in the tank after pumping.

The dairy business always conducted business this way and you accepted that there was no way to change it. Until now.

Revolutionary SolutionInvensys, the leading global technology and controls company, has developed a truly ground breaking dairy custody transfer solution. The system is centered on an innovative Foxboro® CFT50 digital Coriolis mass flowmeter, connected to a Foxboro CFS10/20 mass flowtube, and additional instruments. The flowmeter’s unique technology enables it for the first time to overcome common dairy plant measurement problems. The Invensys solution delivers something previously thought impossible: certified, highly accurate, direct measurement of sanitary milk flows.

So, for the first time, you get real measurement and management of your inventory as it comes in the door. From the dry hose at startup to the last drops at the end of the delivery, you pay only for the milk you actually receive!

This solution can also be applied at other points in your plant’s process piping where similar problems arise, and the benefits go well beyond simple measurement. For instance, seal-out hardware allows a local inspector to verify the meter and protect it from tampering. The Invensys solution can also signal for the printout of a ticket that accurately documents the total mass of milk transferred. Our remote terminal unit (RTU) can automatically shut off the pumps the second a batch transfer is completed. You save money at every step. So your shrinkage problem shrinks dramatically.

Way Beyond Weigh ScalesThis automated Invensys solution is far more accurate than driver dipsticks. It’s also more accurate and less expensive than weigh scales, whose recalibrations, recertifications, updates, and maintenance may cost $30,000 a year or more.

Our mass flow solution also eliminates costly maintenance-intensive workarounds (such as air eliminators). Instead, the Invensys solution offers direct, precise measurement. The Foxboro mass meter has no moving parts and requires little or no maintenance.

Approved by RegulatorsThe Invensys solution is the only nationally certified mass flowmeter for the custody transfer of dairy products and has passed the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) of the National Conference on Weights and Measures.

If state approvals are not in place when you place an order, Invensys will work directly with your state agencies and make sure that all approvals are finalized before your installation is completed.

Fast Return on InvestmentTypical Return on Investments (ROI) for dairy plants range from one to six months! After that, the Invensys solution continues to provide substantial savings—month after month, year after year—that goes right to your bottom line.

Already at WorkSuccess stories for Invensys custody transfer include plants in Ohio and West Virginia belonging to United Dairy, one of the largest family-owned dairies in the U.S.

Managers at these plants report that the system is surpassing their initial accuracy goal of ≤0.2%. After installation, ROI only took 60 days. Providing reliable and indisputable measurement of actual milk received, the Invensys solution now saves the plant approximately $100,000 year after year.

How It WorksThe CFT50 flowmeter, the heart of our solution, was jointly developed by Invensys researchers and scientists at Oxford University.

Some mass flowmeters may have great trouble measuring flows that contain both gas and liquid. Unfortunately, this two-phase flow occurs every day in every dairy plant. Each batch begins with a dry hose line that is filled with gas (air), and then filled with liquid (milk). Air pockets may appear during the mid-flow and at the end of the batch. As flow decreases, air is again entrained in the line. All these conditions cause erratic flowtube vibrations that make other meters skip or quit entirely.

The Invensys mass flowmeter applies a unique, patented combination of digital control, advanced measurement algorithms, and dynamic compensation to meet these challenges. Results: no skips, stalls, or stops. It continues to provide the most accurate, reliable measurement in the dairy industry.

The Total SolutionThe amazing CFT50 mass flowmeter is only part of our solution. Invensys provides dairies with exceptional performance through a wide variety of instruments and technical support offerings. Invensys supplies additional 3A-approved sanitary instruments that include magnetic flowmeters, temperature transmitters, and conductivity sensors for measurement and control of numerous variables in your dairy process.

Invensys also provides special expertise in resolving difficult batch control issues that frequently make dairy applications challenging for other instrument suppliers. Both routine maintenance and high-level application expertise are enhanced by our close association with top dairy system integrators such as Masterleo.
