Signs are a commonpart of everyday life.

They make life easier; andwithout them we would not easily

find our way. There are signs of every sort –signs that give direction, signs ofidentification, and signs of warning.God Himself not only gives signs, but givesthem in many ways. For example, for 40 yearswhile the children of Israel were travelingthrough the wilderness, He fed them withmanna. This was a daily, consistent, andfaithful sign of the provision of God to supplytheir daily bread. But, when Israel arrived inthe land of Canaan, the heavenly mannaceased. Now, there are many lessons contained withinthis wilderness experience. But, one veryimportant lesson is the principle that as wedevelop more in the Christian faith, we learnto depend less on outward visible signs anddepend more on God.Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “We walk byfaith, not by sight.”It takes faith to believe that God has ordainedthe times and seasons of our lives, and that Heis ordering our every step. It takes faith tobelieve that He will provide for us even in themidst of a fallen and shaken world. Faithbelieves that God is, God can and God will.“We walk by faith, not by sight.”Simple words these are; yet profound in theirmeaning. These seven words embody withinthem a fundamental principle which is one ofthe keys of a revived spirit and a joyful heart. These words contain the secret of a trustingand quiet soul. They deliver: assurance, peace, power and rest.Upon close examination, you can see that eachone of the words, “We walk by faith, not bysight,” is comprised of only one syllable. I like

that because it teaches me that while it iscommon to hear about “the deep, the secret, and the mysterious.” God has made thingsquite simple for those whose hearts areprepared to receive. Now, this walk by faith is not a walk “in thedark.” It is a walk, instead, with the fullassurance and confidence that God is leadingus on the journey. It is together with Him, andwith others, that we find ourselves on thispath. How does one walk? It is step-by- step.Regardless of social status or position, politicalaffiliation or religious denomination, or anyother social classification; the basic mode oftransportation for man is walking. For the person who chooses to honor God,what is the mode of spiritual transportation ashe walks through this life? According to thescripture, it is faith.

“We walk by faith.”Faith is the shoe that holds us, the path thatleads us, and the power that propels us as wetravel along the way. What is faith? Simplystated, faith is trusting God. And, so we walktrusting God, even when we cannot see anyoutward visible sign. There is much in thistwenty-first century that can cause us to be intrepidation, fear and panic. In every realm andkingdom of this world, things are beingshaken. The Psalmist David said inPsalm 46:2, 3.“Though the earth beremoved, and though themountains be carriedinto the midst of thesea; Though the watersthereof roar and betroubled, though themountains shake withthe swelling thereof.”

Education

With a spiritual eye of discernment, we see thecommon patterns and ways-of-life changingrapidly and even, in some cases, quicklydissolving. Even the natural scientist, thecommon economist, the statesman and theeveryday parent can see, figuratively speaking, mountains are being carried into the midst ofthe sea. Establishments and institutions, customs and laws; these signs, which haveseemed secure for years and even forcenturies, are now melting before our veryeyes.Nevertheless, God is in the midst of it all. Wemust look to Him with eyes of faith and keepwalking. Walking in bold faith with the calmassurance that if everything we can see withour natural eye should disappear, there is stillGod!God wants us to trust Him. He wants us totrust Him and not the economy or politicians, bankers or weathermen. He wants us to putour trust in Him, alone. Without doubt, all ofus are going to be tried, and the sight of thingsthat we have grown accustomed to will beremoved more and more.Expect movement and shifting.Expect pressure and refinement. Then you will not be surprised when it comes. And, when it comes, understand and knowthat God is in control. God is able.God is faithful. This is the key to a revived spirit and the keyto successful passage in days ahead as “Wewalk by faith, not by sight.”
