A photographers lifeMartha Schwarz, 29, freelance photographer

Ive had three different homes I was born. My family and I lived in a small

flat the first years of my life, then we moved to a larger one. My parents have

lived there then.

I moved out when I got engaged and Ive lived in a small house near the Danube

the last seven years. My husband and I have been married

almost five years now.

Ive been a professional photographer nearly six years now and I love it. I

Try to get exercise before a long camping trip. It will help you feel better on the

trip. good stretching exercises every day will help. walking or

swimming is also useful.

2 Most people dont seem to worry about this kind ofviolence. Games with a lot of killing

are now acceptable for children in our society. Although they really like it, as a mother,

I am concerned about the violence in childrens video games and movies. A few years

ago, I became so concerned about itthat I decided to leave my job as a journalist and

spend my life researching the problem of violent childrens entertainment. In my

research, I have found out some very interesting things.

3 The first thing that I have learned is this: while aggression is a part of human nature,

violence is learned. Children learn violent behavior by copying, like they learn

everything else.

4 The second thing that I have learned is that children under the age of eight cannot

separate fact from fiction: that is why they worry about monsters under their beds.

This is also the reason that children may not understand why it is acceptable for

television characters to hit, kick, and shoot each other-but it is not acceptable for

children to do this at school.

5 Hundreds of scientific studies show that viewing violence increase violence.

Researchers have found out that young children become more aggressive after playing

violent video games or watching violent television programs.

6 This frightens me. What are we parents teaching our young children when we allow

them to watch violent TV programs and play with violent toys and games?

7 Watching television or movie violence is harmful to children, but at least it is passive. By

contrast, when children play violent video games, they actively participate in the

murder and destruction. This entertainment teaches children that violence and

destruction are fun, that shooting doesnt kill, or even hurt.

8 Arthur Pober, executive director of the Entertainment Software Review Board, thinks

parents need to pay careful attention. Parents have to understand what their children

are doing, he says. Certain types of entertainment are not made for children.

9 I agree that parents are responsible for their childrens entertainment, but the problem

is that the companies are marketing the games directly at children. I think the video

game companies need to stop the marketing of violent games to young children. They

should also clearly label all games with the level of violence they contain. Manufacturers

WATER SPORTS IN HAWAII

1 If you enjoy water sports, Hawaii is the place for you! You can go swimming all year

round in the warm water of the Pacific Ocean. You can go sport fishing from the shore or

from a boat. If you like boats, you can go sailing, canoeing, or windsurfing. Or, you can also try

some other water sports that are especially popular in Hawaii: surfing, snorkeling and scuba

diving.

6 Surfing is a sport which started in Hawaii many years ago. The Hawaiians called it

"he'enalu," which means "to slide on a wave." Long before the arrival of the Europeans, the

Hawaiians used to ride on the waves on long, narrow wooden boards. When the first

Europeans came to the islands, they were amazed by these surfing Hawaiians. Since that

time, surfing has been a very popular sport on the California coast and in Australia, among

other places.

12 If you want to try surfing, you need, first of all, to be a good swimmer. You also

have to have an excellent sense of balance. You must swim out from the beach with your

surfboard under your arm. When you get to where the waves begin to break, you wait for a

calm moment. Then you try to stand up on the board. The wave will begin to rise under you.

You must try to steer the board with your feet so that you can stay on top of the wave. The

important thing is to keep your balance and not to fall down. If you can manage this, you will

have an exciting ride all the way in to the shore.

19 Scuba diving and snorkeling are two ways to get a close look at the beauty lying

below the surface of the ocean. The waters of the Hawaiian Islands are clean, clear, and

warm. They contain hundreds of kinds of colorful fish. The undersea world is made evenmore colorful by the coral reefs of red, gold, white, and light purple. There are larger fish or

sea turtles that inhabit these reefs.

24 Scuba diving allows you to see the most interesting undersea sights. "SCUBA"

means "Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus," that is, equipment for breathing

and swimming around far under water. In Hawaii, you can take special courses to learn how

to scuba dive. After the courses, you can get a certificate that will allow you to dive alone.

Since itcan be dangerous, proper instruction and great care are always necessary when you

are scuba diving.

30 If you are less adventurous, you might try snorkeling instead of scuba diving. Lessequipment is needed: just a face mask, a breathing tube (snorkel), and flippers for your feet.

It only takes a few minutes to learn how to snorkel. Although you cannot dive deep into the

Do you speak British or American?

American and British people both speak English, of course, but sometimes it does not

seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British

and American English.

First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans dont say all the letters in each

word, especially consonants like t and d. For example, Americans may say I dunno

instead of I dont know, or they may say Whaddya say? instead of What do you say?

However, the British usually pronounce their consonants more carefully.

Also, some letters have different sounds. For example, Americans say the a in half

like the a in cat, but the British say the a in half like the o in soft. The r is

sometimes said differently, too. When an American says farmer, you can usually hear the

r. But you cannot hear the r in British English. The British say fahmah.

Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English. The

two languages have different words for some things. For example, the words for clothing are

different. Americans use the word sweater, but the British say jumper. Americans wear

vests over their shirts, but in England they wear vests under their shirts. An American

man wears a tuxedo to a very fancy party, but an English man wears a dinner-jacket.

Americans talk about pants or slacks, but the British talk about trousers.

Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going

to telephone friends, you ring them up. In America, you give them a call. The British use

the word lovely to describe something they like. Americans use the word nice or great.

There are also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans almost always

use the helping word do with the verb have. They might say, Do you have an extra pen?

The British often ask the question in a different way. They might say, Have you got an extra

pen?

for the difference. Languages change over time. When the same language is used in different

MANILLA, Nov. 10- The Phillippine Air Force ferried medical teams and relief supplies today

to provinces ravaged by Typhoon Agnes. The authorities said 515 people died in the typhoon and

more than 400 were missing.

An Air Force spokesman said more than 163 tones of food, medicine and clothing had been

sent to the Visayan region, 300 miles South of Manila and more aids was on the way.

The typhoon hit the region on Monday. The spokesman said helicopters were rescuing people

stranded by floods that remained chest-deep today in some areas of Panay Island, which appeared to

have been hit the worst. Most of the fatalities and missing were on the island, where 445,000 people

were homeless.

The Philippine National Red Cross reported that 90 percent of the 86,000 houses in Capiz

Province on Panay were destroyed. Many of the dead were children who drowned as 30-foot waves

smashed into coastal villages.
