What’s Your Super Power?I’ve had the distinct pleasure of meeting with and being interviewed by the class of 3K this week. Mr Rodger Koschade’s class of Year 3 students had prepared a lengthy list of probing questions that showed they had seriously considered the sorts of angles they wished to pursue to find out more about me as a person, the role of a Principal and also the history of Pulteney Grammar School. The students were patient and inquisitive investigators as I shared stories of my own schooling experience, spoke of my aspirations and experiences as an educator and as a parent, wife and sometime gardener.

The question that I grappled with the most was from Thomas: “If it was possible, what type of superpower would you like to have and why?”

How would you answer this question? Would it be invisibility, flight, invulnerability, control over time, the ability to read minds or superhuman strength?

I perhaps chose an obvious one – the power of healing. I don’t mean healing in the sense of the smallest wounds or cuts, when a simple band aid would do. Rather, the power to heal those who suffer long term and chronic pain or to help a person walk again or to regain their sight following illness or injury; perhaps to ease another’s burden of worry or to provide support during the debilitating darkness of depression. I look on those in the medical field, such as the wonderful eye surgeon the late Dr Fred Hollows or burns specialist Dr Fiona Wood, as possessing such superpowers. And yet they are simply human. We all have the capacity.

So whilst I won’t be running around the School grounds in a cape anytime soon, I thank Thomas for asking me such a great question and prompting my thinking about what I can do as an individual, and what we can do as a community, to continue to provide opportunities to exert our superpowers for good; to help heal those closest to us and more broadly in our wider world.

“Screen-agers” in the Digital AgeI highly commend an article published in the Australian Financial Review this week about families finding balance in children’s use of technology.

From the Head of Prep ‘Greening of the Prep School’

The staff and students of the Prep School are currently involved in a ‘Greening of the Prep School’ project under the expert guidance of staff members Mr Dodd, Mrs Phillips and Mrs Sanders.

Class, vegetable and herb gardens

The Prep School students have been involved in planting ‘class gardens’ with classroom teachers during Term 3 to further develop our focus on ‘Learning outside of the classroom’. Each class has a plot they have cultivated and the Student Representative Council and the Youth Environment Forum have been busy planting and cultivating vegetable and herb gardens.

The children have loved assisting with this initiative. As all children are naturally curious, the project has promoted much discussion and numerous learning opportunities in areas such as science, maths, art and language. The students are eagerly watching their garden beds for growth, and will reap the benefits of their work later in the term at the harvesting stage when produce from the vegetable gardens will be used during our ‘Sausage and Salad’ fundraiser to support the Magdalene Centre. Community service opportunities such as the ‘Sausage and Salad’ fundraiser, along with the opportunity to donate food on a weekly basis at Chapel encourages the children in the Prep School to learn that, no matter how small their actions, they have the ability to make a difference in their world.

Once the garden beds have had time to mature the class gardens will be judged early in Term 4 during a ‘Prep School Garden Show’. Prizes will be awarded for a variety of categories such as ‘Most Creative Bed’, Most Colourful Bed’, ‘Best Produce Bed’, and ‘Bed - Still Just Alive’!

Wall murals

The first in a series of wall murals entitled ‘Urban Jungle’ has also just been completed in the Prep School play area. Illustrations of tropical birds by the Year 6 classes were transferred onto walls before the students completed the painting of the rainforest mural.

Staff members Mrs Phillips and Mrs Sanders, along with Prep Art Leaders, Calien Sutton and Jade Leane, led this very successful initiative. Much team work and collaboration was required of all students as they participated in this experience. The mural has certainly revitalised the appearance of the Prep School play yard and provides a colourful welcome to all who enter the school through the Gilles Street gates. Plans are underway for the students in Year 5 to create a second mural, incorporating an indigenous theme, to highlight the wall adjacent to the fishpond.

As well as enhancing the landscape of the Prep School play yard, the ‘Greening of the Prep School’ project, has enabled staff to explore and integrate aspects of the Prep School Science, Art and Technology curriculums into outdoor learning experiences for the children. Planning for the project also incorporated the concept of Nature Play pedagogy currently explored at all year levels in Kurrajong.

Creative thinking, problem solving and teamwork were just some of the skills required as students undertook the various tasks involved in this project. Students had to think broadly and use skills such as reasoning, logic, imagination and innovation. These are recognised as important ‘General Capabilities’ for students in the Australian Curriculum and all class teachers encourage the Prep School children to develop these skills on a daily basis.

Further learning opportunities, including a plant propagation program, are planned for Term 4 as we continue to build upon the ‘Greening of the Prep School’ project and align with our School’s key strategic priority to provide an outstanding teaching and learning experience for students.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Dodd, Mrs Phillips and Mrs Sanders for all their work, particularly during the recent school holidays, on the design and implementation of this project.

Leadership

During the second semester of 2016 we will continue to develop a culture of leadership within the Prep School. The emphasis will be on promoting the skills and attitudes required for all students to recognise their leadership potential.

I wish to congratulate the Semester 1 Student Representative Council members and the Year 5 Assistant House Leaders for their roles in the Prep School during the first semester of the year. They approached their leadership roles very responsibly and are to be commended for this. The following leaders for Semester 2 will be presented with their badges on Friday 19 August and I look forward to working closely with them.

Science Week‘Drones, Droids and Robots’ is the theme for national Science Week that has been celebrated in the Prep School this week. The 2016 theme embraces ‘Technology’ in STEM, in particular autonomous technology.

Our celebrations, led by Ms Cox and Mrs Butler Nixon, began at Monday Assembly with presentations from Lillian Canny and Wilfred Pearce in Year 3Z. Lillian and Wilfred introduced students and staff to the robots they had created. This was a

wonderful introduction to a week of engaging learning experiences for all year levels. The lower primary classes experimented with Electronic kits called ’LittleBits’, while upper primary classes were challenged by problem solving activities involving robots and drones. The upper primary classes were also interested in the ideas put forward during presentations from some parents who utilize various automated technology in their workplace environments.

In celebrating Science Week we aim to further encourage the children’s interests in the area of Science and to encourage them to become fascinated by the world in which we live. Thank you to Ms Cox, Mrs Butler Nixon, Mr Johnson and Mr Dodd for their work in organising the program for the week.

‘Preptacular’ - Prep School Musical Evening: 22 SeptemberMrs Cullity, Mrs Antoniadis, and all Prep School students are busy rehearsing for the Prep School Musical Evening to be held in the Adelaide Town Hall on 22 September. The theme for this year’s concert is ‘Heroes’. During the performance the Prep students will be exploring music in various forms to ‘celebrate ordinary people who do extraordinary things’.

In her Music program, Mrs Cullity has encouraged the children to investigate this theme over the year through a carefully planned curriculum. Adrienne’s teaching program, based on the Australian curriculum, incorporates a strong emphasis on the Orff and Kodaly methods. Musical literacy is developed in class lessons through listening, singing, movement, rhythm and beat activities, dance and instrumental playing. Adrienne inspires, empowers and challenges the Prep School students to develop a love and appreciation of music as we work towards a culture of learning and performance in the Prep School.

Invitations and further information regarding the Preptacular will be sent to families in the coming weeks so please put this date in your diary.

These children will be very busy in the coming weeks as they work with Mrs Mavropoulos to write their own plays, create their costumes and props, and prepare to perform on Tournament Day at Flinders University on September 11. The students have selected a Maths Engineering challenge this year and will draw on their creative, critical and problem solving skills as they work as a team to solve the challenge. We wish them the best of luck and thank Mrs Mavropoulos for her guidance and support in the lead up to the competition. We also thank Mrs Stewart and Mrs Bulter Nixon for lending their support to the team.

Year 12 Valedictory PreparationsIt is amazing to consider that our Year 12 students have twelve school weeks left on campus at Pulteney Grammar School. This will be a busy time for the students as they put finishing touches on major assignments and begin preparations in earnest for their end of year examinations.

However, it is important to also plan for the celebrations associated with graduating.

Key events which parents and loved ones are asked to place in their calendar include the following.

• Wednesday 26th October: Student Valedictory Dinner. 6.30pm, The Pavilion (Veale Gardens)

• Friday28thOctober:ValedictoryDay From 10am, Parent Morning Tea followed by Valedictory Service (Wyatt Hall)

The following months will be a time of excitement for some, but also one which has the potential to result in anxiety for others. It is therefore imperative that the lines of communication between home and school remain open so as to ensure that each student has the best possible opportunity to academically succeed whilst also caring for their wellbeing.

Thrilling times are upon us!

From the Chaplain Anglican Schools: Rivers in the Desert. Communities of Hope.I write this week having had the privilege of attending the Anglican Schools Association’s annual conference hosted this year in Adelaide. The theme of the conference ‘Rivers in the Desert: Anglican Schools as Communities of Hope’ was ambitious. We rose to the challenge and the conference was a great success and for many it proved to be inspirational. Many members of the SA Anglican school community contributed to the planning and overall success.

Pulteney can be rightly proud of its contribution. I was conference chaplain with Ruth Mathieson from Trinity College. The Pulteney Drum Corps led the Opening Ceremony in a joyfully spectacular fashion. Our students contributed to opening prayers and literally shone with their generous enthusiasm. The Governor of South Australia, Hieu Van Le AC thanked all attendees for the wonderful contribution that Anglican schools made to our country and was able to reflect with gratitude the pride he felt for the personal journey of his own sons, both Pulteney Old Scholars. The Conference Prophet, bishop of Ballarat Gary Weatherill, was a teacher at Pulteney just before going into ministry. Greg Champion, also an Old Scholar was a highly entertaining after dinner speaker. His humour, fabulously southern Australian centric (Aussie Rules), was enjoyed by all even if it was a little lost on the Queensland and New Zealand contingent.

In the company of Principals and Chaplains, truly some of the nation’s very best educational and spiritual leaders, I experienced the great sense of pride that comes from being part of an inspired endeavor and a larger interconnected community. All these expressions of the Anglican Christian tradition are awe-inspiring accomplishments. What makes this so?

The gospel reading from Matthew 16: 13-20 gives an insight. The disciple Peter finally gets the full identity of Jesus, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God’. Christians know that it is in weakness, not power over others, that Christ’s strength is made apparent. Christians also know that the church is an important part of Christian faith. The church should be an expression of God’s kingdom here on earth. The church is not simply a means to an end, for example attending church is not simply a stepping-stone to heaven. The church is much more than this.

Our journey with Jesus takes us from knowing what others say about him, to knowing who he is for us. We are all on that journey. We all experience Jesus in very different ways even though we are experiencing the same Jesus. We know that the building of the church begins with the faith if the earliest disciples and continues through the ages with the faith of ordinary people like us. Jesus did not only choose great thinkers and saintly people to build the church. He chose ordinary people who simply open themselves to the possibility of being great believers because they are first great listeners.

To listen does not mean to passively sitting around in silence waiting for God to speak to us. We need to be active. We need to open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence and power in the daily events of our life. This may be as moving and as profound as when a child utters its first words to the delight of its parents, or when a person, deep in the depths of Alzheimer’s, has a moment of lucid recognition. It may be the unexpected blessing that comes our way that has a miraculous impact on our lives.

We should not underestimate the living Presence of Jesus being with us in the everyday. When we serve others, when we offer and receive hospitality with generosity and kindness. Pulteney students and the wider community constantly raise money and awareness for a number of causes and donate food for homeless people. There is no doubt that such generosity speaks of young people who get involved. It also speaks of a long tradition of Christian faith and service that has informed the ethos of Pulteney for generations. This in turn gives life to the outward looking, generous, hope filled, perspectives found in Pulteney students.

ConfirmationIn Term 3, the Year 6 cohort will be learning and reflecting about confirmation. Confirmation is a formal celebration of a young person taking on the responsibility for their faith development that their parents and god parents promised to undertake at their infant baptism. At baptism all Parents and Godparents undertake to support the child’s faith journey and this includes supporting them explore confirmation.

Confirmation is also a time when teenagers and adults pursue their faith independently. Every member of the Pulteney community is welcome to join us in this faith journey. It is not essential that confirmation occurs at this time or at all. The invitation is to explore faith in community.

Magdalene Centre The Pulteney community continues to be generous in its regular contributions. Along with non-perishable long life food, blankets, scarves and beanies are also greatly appreciated at this time of the year to help homeless people sleeping rough at this time of year. Donations can be brought to the Chapel Foyer. Baskets have been labelled so that we can sort and care for your donations.

From the ArchivesPulteney has a long history of educating children in South Australia. In the school’s archives we have a diverse amount of material that gives an insight into our history. There are many important events in the history of the School that are worth remembering but there are also some quirky points of interest that you are unlikely to have ever heard of before (unless you were there). Look out for the ‘From the Archives’ in future editions of PRW – you never know what you might learn!

The future of sport -Females kicking goals!Elite level female sport is on the rise. In recent times we have seen improved coverage and exposure of high quality women’s sporting events globally and nationally. For example, here in Australia the Women’s National Cricket League formed the Women’s Big Bash League, with 10 matches shown live and free-to-air on national television. Initially Channel Ten had planned to show eight matches but due to the ratings success the television broadcaster decided to increase its coverage.

Australian rules football has also helped to increase female participation in traditionally male-oriented sports. Over the past four seasons the AFL have hosted a female football match between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons teams, showcasing the best female AFL talent from around the country. The public support of these matches was beyond all expectations, and the 2015 female match even easily out-rated the male equivalent, with the TV audience peaking at 501,000 viewers. Currently, the Olympic games are being held in Rio De Janerio and is one international competition that has male and female athletes receiving very similar exposure, recognition and adulation. This was evident in the aftermath of the female Rugby Sevens gold medal match, where those in the Australian media were quick to laud the exploits of the successful Australian women. The Olympic games however, only come around every two to four years.

The ever popular female sport of netball has also seen an increase in coverage, with the success of the ANZ Netball championship leading to Foxtel broadcasting each game live and in high definition.

With all these developments in the exposure and popularity of female sport at a national level, has there been any flow on effect to our school PE and sport program?

In 2015 we saw an increase in Year 12 female participation in Physical Education, and in Outdoor Education in 2016, where approximately 50% of the class members were female, which exceeded the cohort average for those year levels. Also in 2015, and for only the second time in the school’s history, the Merit certificate for Physical Education was awarded to a female student, Sophie Vardaro.

Sophie Vardaro is now an old-scholar who arrived at Pulteney in 2012 as a Year 9 student from the Riverland. Sophie chose Physical Education in Year 12 knowing it would help develop her knowledge and understanding of human physiology, which would be invaluable in her planned tertiary studies. Sophie also appreciated the active lifestyle that comes with being a Physical Education student and found it helped with study in her other subjects to be away from her desk a few hours a week. While she is aware that some female students may shy away from participating in PE (and sports) due to a perceived lack of technical proficiency, Sophie encourages girls who are interested to pursue the subject. She knows first hand that they will be well supported at Pulteney, develop valuable skills, and benefit immensely from the theoretical side of PE as well as the physical aspect.

From a co-curricular sporting perspective, Pulteney’s female sports teams have also been experiencing some high levels of success recently. For the first time in our history, Pulteney won the IGSSA Softball shield after a breakout 2015 season on the back of some very strong team performances and individual brilliance from Sophie Ridgway and Kimmie Adkins. 2015 also saw Pulteney as close runner-up in the basketball competition only losing the one game all year and also placed third in tennis within the state-wide Independent Girls’ sporting competition. The level of competition within this association is getting stronger and stronger each year and our participation and success is something that the Pulteney community should be very proud of.

Finally, to capitalise on the momentum generated by the excitement surrounding female Australian Rules Football, Pulteney Grammar School have been integral in pioneering the first ever IGSSA Australian Rules Football Carnival, to be held later this year. Here at Pulteney we are proud to be part of the wider community that is supporting and celebrating female participation in sport and Physical Education now and into the future!
