Private PR actioner Liaison – Rachel Parker now in this role. Discussion re ?setting up a SIG.

Otago

The Otago Members were interested in the feedback from different regions about the Referrals to ENT. Kylie Hollows reported that this issue was discussed at the DHB Leaders Forum – there are no national trends and issues appear to affecting specific areas only.

There was discussion in Otago about how difficult it is for families to obtain the Child Disability Allowance (CDA), which was raised under Insurance and Private Practise. Could the NZSTA work with WINZ to develop a set of guidelines pertaining to Communication Disorders? GPs, paediatricians and consultants may also need more information about speech, language and communication disorders.

The Otago Members discussed the recent NZSTA and the following points were made:

* Members who attended the conference generally found it interesting and thought provoking. *One member queried if the Conference format is outmoded. She commented that sometimes researchers have to present at Conferences as part of their funding, and this can be frustrating for attendees if the research is incomplete! In many cases, researchers are presenting papers which may already have been published and attendees could read these instead. She thought short workshops were a better format. * Another member commented that she wants to come away from PD with a skill she can apply. * In the past there have been joint conferences with SPA – Has the EC considered revisiting this?

Professional Development 2015 NZSTA Professional Development Symposium – Venue/Location TBC Planning is underway for our next NZSTA Professional Development event – the 2015 NZSTA PD Symposium. This is a two day event with a keynote each day and plenty space to hear about all the great clinical activity that is happening in our communities. Please discuss and forward your ideas for 2x NZ keynote speakers for this event. Please start thinking about possible topics or projects that you wish to present on. More details to follow. Please forward further ideas or questions to Philippa Friary Professional Development Portfolio NZSTA.

Northland

Northland members suggested that due to the recent ENT issues across several regions it may be useful to have an ENT specialist present on their field and reasons that may explain why our patients are not being always being seen promptly/ways of SLT and ENT disciplines working together to move forward from this. International Communication Project Generate ideas in each area as to how and what events people can organise in their areas. Any feedback to take back to Communications about this project?

Northland

members are enthusiastic about the project. There was a lot of discussion about ideas which include:

Presenting at a local Pecha Kucha night and suggesting this to other regions – as a way of getting local communities talking about communication disorders. We also thought these could coincide with when ‘Mic’ is visiting each region.

Creating an ad to be on local radios – DHB staff are looking into this to ensure we get HR approval for media engagement. Informing NZSTA of this was also discussed.

Discussed the possibility of a video that may be able to be used and played in local GP clinics/libraries/ED/Child health reception etc.

The issue of limitations that employees of MOH/MOE may be placed under was highlighted, especially as it is election year as we cannot be seen as speaking out politically. Auckland

Question re when the baton will be coming up to Auckland

Need to find prominent speaker to be asked to speak during the regional visit of baton – Suzanne Purdy to contact Libby French Waikato/BoP

Natasha Fitzpatrick is working with the ICP coordinators this year to promote this event. She discussed a push for online promotion (twitter, facebook) for conversation initiatives. Biggest event is the Microphone run from Invercargill up through the North Island. Natasha encouraged members to look at the toolkit available on the website for ideas.

Called for ideas or plans from sites:

Fiona Hewerdine mentioned a meeting of BoP, Waikato and Rotorua for the Mic run, and passing the Mic between DHBs. She also had the idea of a balloon release, with BOP media coverage, and emphasized for people to use the speech bubbles available on the ICP site. She also suggested speech bubbles be used for patients to showcase their communicative competency, i.e.: in communication groups.

Biddy suggested speech bubbles along Waikato SLT corridor

Natasha requested Natalie Oakley send ICP images from previous DHB study day to assist with promotion. Central

Sarah Martin noted the use of the ICP2014 logo and a small blurb at the end of Emma Irvine’s e-mails and expressed how effective it is.

Jodi White talked about the ICP2014 twitter account that can be followed to see what other countries are doing to promote ICP2014. Wellington

Ideas discussed included:

Members wondered whether the Talking Trouble Project might make a good topic for an interview on National Radio

Display at National Library

Aphasia Day in Wellington

Student campaigning during placement

Approaching media (e.g. local newspapers,NZ Herald)

Canterbury

Amy Eastwood (part of the NZ working party for ICP updated us on the project and the recent tele-conference that the working party held).

- Members asked for some feedback and information regarding what we are campaigning for: Amy replied it’s looking at communication difficulties and how we can help people living with these and increase awareness on a community, education sector and health sector level. It’s all about increasing awareness in the wider community, and the benefits that may come from this.

- The first event coming to Canterbury ‘Mic Tour’, started in Bluff the week of the meeting, every area will be holding an event when it arrives MP’s media etc. will be invited to attend.

- When ‘The Mic’ arrives in Christchurch (still waiting on confirmed dates) members are keen to hold an event, would be good to have a variety of people talking and different performances. Amy has brainstormed some ideas with the CHCH aphasia group.

- Plan is to get in contact with MP’s, council, Amy has sent a letter to the Mayor once these groups are onboard will contact media, ?if we can get a media figure to MC the event.

- A challenge will be getting public attendance high for the event. - Ideas for the event from members at the meeting: CHCH Neurological Choir

interested, family stories re. Living with someone with a communication difficulty, Deaf community involvement with NZSL to highlight communication isn’t just talking,

- Amy is keen to set up a CHCH ICP volunteer/working group, if you are interested in getting involved please contact Amy [email protected], Susan McDonald expressed her interest in helping out

- Other ICP activities that were discussed: Aphasia group were discussing how to explain aphasia to children, could approach schools to get the message re. Communication difficulties to younger children Amy to come along to Neurological Choir with communication speech bubbles, can have members fill them out, take photos, can post on social media A board on the ICP will be set up at CHCH hospital as well as one in Re-START Mall, they will possibly have a pile of speech bubbles that people can fill out. Area rep. To send out speech bubble templates and Campaign Toolkit to all members in the Canterbury/Westland Area so everyone can use them. Encouraging members to sign the online ICP petition Otago

The Otago Members were disappointed ‘Mic’ had not arrived in the district in time for our meeting and Dunedin Aphasia Day. The ‘Campaign Toolkit’ was shared and discussed. Members were encouraged to think of ways to promote ICP.

One member is undertaking some study and is planning to complete a project looking at an ‘Aphasia-friendly Dunedin’. It may be possible to incorporate ICP within this work.

Is the ICP going to replace SLT Awareness Week this year?

Is an analysis going to be completed to see how effective ICP has been?

Review of AGM minutes Several areas commented these were unavailable at the time of their meetings Waikato/BoP

Carla Knott took rough minutes of the AGM for our Area - these were briefly reviewed.

She asked specifically to bring to members’ attention that NZSTA are reviewing the criteria for the dysphagia component of Provisional Membership.

Carla reports via email of three MOE SLTs in Whakatane who were not eligible for full membership due to dysphagia requirements not being met under NZSTA requirements, and currently work as SLTs independent of the NZSTA.

Discussion around the sites revealed that sites agreed this is specific to foreign-trained SLTs and MOE SLTs, and there is general disgruntlement.

Wellington Members were updated about events at AGM, including:

Fees will increase by inflation this year

The EC is now fully staffed, and includes several new faces: o Brigid McNeill was formally elected to Professional Standards

Portfolio, having been co-opted into this role last year o Karen McLellan was elected to the Maori & Cultural Developments

Portfolio o Annette Rotheram was elected to the Communications Portfolio

Jodi White was elected to Member Networks Portfolio Canterbury

One member is going to contact NZSTA to find out more information re. SLT being taken off of the skills shortage list.

It was recommended to members present that they go on the NZSTA website and familiarize themselves with the new members of the Exec

Lianna mentioned she has recently been referred a 10 year old for voice therapy. She enquired about support for this caseload as it is not her area of expertise, and also asked more generally where the boundaries are between MoE and MoH in this caseload. The Voice SIG is coordinated by Vanessa Jerome and Natasha Curham, who can be contacted at [email protected]

Nelson/Marlborough DHB recently had access to NZSTA website blocked as there was a link to an ad for Viagra – this has since been resolved

Melissa has been in touch with NZSTA re: setting up list-servs where members could receive updates in their inbox. Members commented that this would be particularly useful for aphasia and voice. The possibility of using Google Groups is being investigated but there are some barriers to accessing this via DHB email addresses. One member commented that this doesn’t necessarily need to be high-tech and using an email list that is moderated by the SIG coordinator could work well. The advantages of a list-serv are ease of subscribing/unsubscribing, and the ability to have responses delivered in ‘batches’ in order to avoid inbox-clogging

A general discussion was held around the mention of a Paeds Dysphagia Position Paper (as mentioned in the collated Summer Area Meeting Minutes, Emma Necus is planning to coordinate a working group looking into this). The understanding between MoE and MoH therapists was discussed – whereby the MoH therapist is responsible for setting the programme, with the the MoE therapist carrying this out. All present felt that it would be great for MoE therapists to have some competency in Dysphagia, though all recognized it is essential that this sits alongside access to adequate supervision and support. Some members felt paediatric dysphagia is a specialized skill that should require post-graduate training. In general it was agreed it would be good to have some clarification nationally around the agreements between MoE and MoH therapists.

All in agreement that a Paediatric Dysphagia Position Paper would be an excellent first step as a Best Practice Resource.

Meryl Jones shared a discussion she had had with Ann Smaill (Talklink). Enable has a new process where clients are required to rate their own communication. There is concern about the impact of this on clients who have communication difficulties.

Rachel Emmitt discussed NZSTA website difficulties. Waikato SLTs unable to access website for the last two weeks. Natalie Oakley at Tauranga reported the same, with sessions ‘timing out’ quickly.

Rachel also emphasised the need to have a CPD log which shows activity (i.e.: conferences attended, articles read), as evidence of PD for audits/employment applications. General consensus across sites.

Central 1. Supervisors needed for experienced SLTs. 2. Gisborne Hospital SLTs being left out of discussion about the part-time Allied

Wellington

One member commented that she had heard of $270 being charged for a session with private SLT – though she was unsure about the nature of this session. Is there any guidance from NZSTA around setting fees for those members working privately?

o Libby mentioned there is a Private Practitioners Representative who sits alongside the Area Reps and may be a useful reference for this discussion – Rachel Patrick has been appointed to this role, and Rachel can be contacted at [email protected]

o Libby also mentioned the Commerce Commission have launched a series of fact sheets for people working in the Health sector, around some of the laws they are involved in enforcing, and these include information about how to avoid anti-competitive behaviour, setting fees, etc. The link to these is available via the website: http://www.speechtherapy.org.nz/page/about-slt/ethics/?news_post=1159

Canterbury 10/16 of the members present had no received their Autumn Edition of communication matters, this also happened a lot last year in the region What other questions would members in your area like to ask of the Exec? Central

1. Is it possible to get information around what activities/PD goes in each category of the CPD log?

2. What is the vision for NZSTA? What are we going to do to further our business? (This could be an agenda item for discussion within the area meetings)

Wellington

Can people who are not SLTs submit articles to CM?

What other feedback would members like to share with the Exec? Canterbury

AGM in the middle of the day during the conference worked well.

A lot of members are still struggling with the online CPD log- find it challenging to know what sections activities go into, find they need to keep a separate document to keep track of the PD events they have attended/recorded online as members can not see what specific events they have/haven’t entered into the log, members are guessing this is still a work in progress for the association.
