Director's CommentsBy Steve Krupa * Interviewed by Carol ScheffelsWhat did you enjoy most about directing "42nd Street"? STEVE: You guys - the people! As I spoke of at our cast party,it was a joy watching all of you grow as dancers and performersduring this play! We couldn't have produced it without all of ourtalented, helpful technical and back stage people. What aspect of directing this play was most challenging? STEVE: The whole extensive content of the musical play makesit one of the most challenging to direct. "42nd Street" is one ofmy wife's and my favorite musicals, and we've seen it at manyvenues over the years. My wife, Sandi, especially enjoys the tapdancing. So, the challenge and our love of the show propelledme to direct it.Were there technical challenges as well? STEVE: The biggest challenge in that area was the screen usedfor the "Shadow Waltz" number. We borrowed the screen fromthe Lakeland Players, but the group had never used it. So, it

was a learning experience for me and the HOH technical staff. The audience seemed to enjoy that part, so the trail blazingpaid off.How did the large amount of dancing in this show affect yourrole, or did it affect it? STEVE: I have total confidence in Sharon Heltsley, ourChoreographer, as I've worked with her in several of my shows. I knew going in she was a triple threat (dancer, actress, singer),and that she would be a huge asset to the play. My onlyconcern was that she could become overwhelmed with hermultiple roles. However, because Sharon was involved in thedancing, she created routines of her own liking, which was anadvantage. Are you open to directing more plays for Heart-of-the-Hills? STEVE: Of course! Again, because of the wonderful, funpeople!! I need to thank Bill Baird for accepting the role of BillyLawlor. He rose to the challenge of singing a tenor role, whenhe's normally a base/baritone, and learned intense tapping. Another actor to commend is Rev. Larry Hooks, who learned totap dance during the play. They and the whole cast pushedthemselves and learned new skills during practices andperformances, which they, in turn, gave as gifts to ouraudiences!
Audience FeedbackA letter of thanks from Janet Gardocki was addressed toMelanie Lee:...."the entire production (music, singing, dancing)was fabulous....they (22 of her friends) said it was good, cleanfun entertainment which was affordable and heartwarming...They look forward to (our) next production..." Cole.
