Review Look Back in Anger Alex Fleuren Look Back in Anger is considered one of the most important plays in modern British theater. It was the very first well-known example of a "Kitchen Sink drama," which is a style of theater that explores the emotion and drama you find in ordinary domestic life. Jimmy Porter, the main character of the play, became the model for the "Angry Young Man," a term describing an entire generation of artists and working class young men in the British society after World War II. In 1989, a film version of the play, directed by Judy Dench, was released. This film, although not quite fitting in our current blockbuster-cinemas, is actually still a film worth seeing. Despite a complete lack of special effects, a stage that hardy ever changes, and a cast of merely five actors, the story is still relevant. Even in 2015, a lot of people may find this story applicable to their own lives. Since the story is a Kitchen Sink drama, meaning it is about ordinary domestic life, after all those years you will still be able to relate to the story. For example, you can find an abundance of romance throughout the film. This romance is something of all ages, which makes the story still relevant in 2015. Furthermore, everybody knows the importance of acting performances in films. Especially in this film, where the acting really makes the film and the dialogues are the most important, the acting has to be nearly perfect. Luckily, the cast of Look Back in Anger has done a great job on their acting performances. Kenneth Branagh (Jimmy Porter) and Emma Thompson (Alison Porter) both showed their great acting skills, and it is probably partly due to this film that they are now two world-famous actors. However, the overall degree of success of the film is actually quite a disappointment. This could be because people liked the play-version of the story better, or perhaps because the version of the film released in 1959 was superior. The film has won only one minor award, and it has the medium rating of a 7,2 on IMDb. The actual play by John Osborne, however, is seen as one of the leading plays of the 20 th century. It is seen as a very important British work of art, and the film would be just a translation of the great play. In conclusion, if you get the chance to watch the film tonight, you should take it. Although the film may not be a typical Hollywood-blockbuster, has a very plain setup, and does not have any special effects, it is still a classic British story. The film has not been very successful, but the storyline and the acting performances are great. Also, the play on which the film is based, has been extremely successful. So, if you want to try something different, watch the all-time British classic: Look Back in
