REVED! on page three .... Yes, it’s that time of year when we reflect and show our gratitude to friends and family. Personally, I like to show my gratitude by showing up at people’s houses when they’re baking Christmas treats and thanking them after I’ve eaten half the tray. Try it, you’ll like it! Alright, I am grateful for other things, too, like support and encourage- ment, invaluable resources I can’t live without here at Reved headquarters. Okay, maybe ‘headquarters’ isn’t the exact word to describe my one-person staff and teeny home office, but it’s all about image, right? The point is, Reved could not exist without the generous aid from advertisers and sponsors and I’d like to thank the people who have helped make it that much easier. I won’t go into listing the countless names for fear of sounding like a long-winded actress at the Emmy’s, but I do appreciate you all! During the past six months, while publishing Reved, I have been asked some interesting questions, one of which was if I am drunk when I write. I am not, but thanks for your concern. I have also been asked what my plans are for this publication. I would like to expand into a thirty- page glossy with color photos and headshots that will make everyone famous but I haven’t married a sugar daddy yet, so we’ll have to wait on that. In the meantime, why don’t you send your thoughts to [email protected]. Your com- ments will be a way to understand what is and what isn’t working and will help to envision what comes next for Reved. Which brings me to my next subject; What will happen to Revelstoke? Ours is a town that is changing, but who is to know whether these changes will be good or bad? I’m not sure how I feel about what it might mean for us. I am aware FREE! of course Winter 2005/2006 Revelstoke’s Quarterly Arts and Culture Publication ...and your Winter Entertainment Calendar insert! that my property value has in- creased and that, from an occupa- tional standpoint, it might be good for business. But I also realize that I might come to miss the ‘old’ Revelstoke. Like how I can get my truck repaired on the same day I call and how there are never line- ups in the grocery stores unless it’s $1.49 day. I used to be able to ski-tour up the ski hill for easy access, but that is already a thing of the past. The point is, there’s no way to stop the general mergence of humans and when you have a town like ours, who wouldn’t want to come here? On November 20th, itwas hard to find a place tostand at The Regent Pub.Hands were moving and toeswere grooving in time to theMocking Shadows, a sevenpiece band from Calgary. The Shadows have animpressive tour list thatincludes performances withBB King, Tragically Hip,Jann Arden, ZZ Top andTrooper. Judging by thediversity of the famousnames they’ve travelled with,it was no surprise to see amixed audience the nightthey performed. From old toyoung; Marmot to J Crew, everyone in the room foundsomething in common thatnight. For a look at whatyou missed if you weren’tthere, go to their website atwww.mockingshadows.com.

Scene it! I always feel so lucky to bewatching The Best of theBanff Film Festivalamongst some of the samescenery shown on thescreen. Sometimes I think Icould leave the theatre rightthen and do that stuff. If Iwanted. Except for I willnever jump off a cliff.Something about whatMom used to say; don’t runwith knives, don’t swallowmarbles and don’t, for thelove of all things holy, parachute off a cliff. Withskis.e. The trouble these daysis the klepto-focus (it’s aword) on what makes oneperson better than the otherso they can be filmed orphotographed. What aboutgood, old fashioned iceskating or walking in theparks? I’d like to see somefootage on that. They couldcall it Extreme Ice Skating tomake it sound more excit-ing. In any case, aside fromthere being a bit too muchNepal stuff and no watersports yet again, I laugheduntil I cried at some of theshorter films and left feelinggood. (Most likely because Idon’t jump off cliffs.)

great may differ, we shouldconsider that, as residents westill control the atmosphere ofthis town. What people seeand how they feel aboutRevelstoke is dependent on thecommunity. I for one hope wecan keep our welcoming, cozyspirit. Plenty of ski townssuccessfully boast small-townatmospheres. Let’s not letnegative thoughts and remarkslinger in the air like woodsmoke, (ooops, another touchysubject). Okay, I’ve taken upmore space than usual (jobperk!) so let’s dry our eyes andhold hands and see what’sinside this issue of Reved!

Renaud Paradis With digital cameras in thepalms of most everyone thesedays, it is unique to find someonelike Renaud Paradis. Proclaiminghimself an ‘old school’photographer, Renaud uses aNikon manual camera and thendevelopes the film himslef. Healso makes his own frames. “Ican’t even get slides developed intown, anymore.” he says, so for asmall fee, he can spend hours inthe darkroom provided at theVisual Arts Center. Renaud’sthought provoking images mostlikely stem from his work outsideas a tree planter, where he’ll findmost of his subjects. He comesfrom a sculpting background anduses photography to express thatby creating the subject from startto finish. Last year, the WoolseyCreek Cafe showed Renaud’sphotos for about two months. “Itwas great exposure and I washappy with the results. One guyfrom Vancouver bought a photocalled Retired. It is an old pair ofboots on a log with moss growingout of them. The photo was forhis Dad, who was a retiredlogger.” Later, Renaud startedexperimenting with what he callsContemporary photos, which is tosay he focuses more on a part ofthe subject, like the dramaticangles of a dead tree. What I likemost about the work of RenaudParadis is that you really have tostop and look at the image. It isnot at first obvious what thesubject is. He has you capturedand coming in for a closer look. You realize then that it could be aclose up of rippling waters or thebark of an old cedar. Perhaps youwere able to visit the Art Centrewhen Renaud’s photos were beingdisplayed, but if not, you mightget a personal showing. Renaudcan be contacted at 837-2064.

During the sum-mer of 2001, localauthor Brent Lea
