And now wo waill O hero, by who«6 side Tbe world has kept Such tender watch, and leal . Ne'er bos the brow of proudest conqueror, Borno such a high, God-consecratcd seal { Ocean Gtove, iV. J.. "" S^FUV.. A Great Problem.—-No. V. I; saw .in m y dream that tho day of Pentecost had fully come at Ocean Grove. The waitingspiritand oxercisea described in toy lust had pervaded the ground for ten, psrhfips I might say twenty days prior to the Annual Camp- meeting. True, there was; held what was callod a Church and Sunday-school Congress, all very well in its wuy, ;but the predominant thought in the minds of the elect of God was, that a Jerusa- lem fire must be enkindled. Tiie al- ternative was clearly preBunted' to the spiritual vision of those who' live near the throne, thus: cither taven/y-fire in abundant measure and consuming en- ergy must bo commanded upon - tha masses here, or world-fires w ill Burely make havoq among us. Hence, the awful" unfolding* of the situation prompted continued pleadings day and night, in reliance upon iho promise— “The kingdom of heaven sufTeroili vio- lence, and the violent take it by force.” This prayor-broath had beon so diffused, that an atinosphere divinely-freighted rested dowo upon the peoplo. Un-j usual soriousheta- prevailed. Yoiirig arid'olti trodalphg the ,beach as -vi£'r-4 ; measured snd ejSamn step. There wn„ a pause on tho line of frivolity. Christ inn boarding-house keepers, w h o ^ha'.’ thought hitherto that no convenient; time for family worship could be,found; now arranged for ita daily celebration; in tiie parlors; and, indeed, the general- topic of conversation ovorywhbre wils,; wlmt strange, continuous und oarnost praying had been going on for so many days, tlio universal conclusion being “thalsomething'was coming!” The day for opening the Camp-mbet- ing arrived. The people flocked to tho Auditorium. Snch an assembly wag neviir convened at Ocean Grovo. They came from every quarter—young men and maidens, old mon and children, Cro^et.grdunda wipre, deserted;. boat- ing and bathing were suspended^ and ,pros$Sw§re poured-into the .haljowed enclosure. Asbury Park, tao,wa&!argely represented, for tho Pentecostal tokens had been recognized iliero. , The miniatore, os they ascended tho platform, looked as though each one had the unction from tho Holy 600 , and reverently bent the knee, breathing the prayer from the heart into the oiir ofheavon, Lord, give’ us a Pentecost I The gay ’ votaries of fashion, who had sometimes crept up there, unbidden, did hot 1venture to intrude'on this beca-, sion. - Th e countenance of President Stokes was so full of light, that it was evident. thafc.he had rolled; ail the .cars upon his Heavenly Father, and that a. faith bordering on omnipotence armed his breast. I noticed, too, that all the members of the Association . warn on the platform, each one aa he appeared kneeling in prayer, joining ardently in the common supplication, .lord, give us g Pentecost I Tho singers, also, ,were there, occupying their places in modest array and with a devout spirit. Bishop Foster, as ho camii upofi the stand, looted as though ho bad “from the mouth of God hia awful charge re- ceived,” and, as if the powers of the upper world rested upon him, he bowed in lowliness before the throne, uttering the pervading v,ryr I,ordjielp, and give.w a Pentecost! On rising from his knees he saw the m otto, in large capitals, Holiness TJnto The Xobd 1 I thought I saw tears start in his eyes just at that moment, as if some tender memories had suddenly been awakened. There was a pauso. A divine hush rested upon tho iasembly Iu fact, up- on many of God’s little ones there came "thespeochless awe that dares not movo, and all tha silont heavon of lovo.” When the key-note.was struck on tho organ, and at tho word of command, the vast concourse arose, upiting in the grand old aoxology! I thought I Wver heard anything like it—heaven seemed to‘be in the Bong, and bands of angelB B eni flying ail'over the congregation. The voices, of the singers 'were tremu- lous, and their ejresi .full b f tear*- When prayer was ofiered it was as if a key had beei» found to open heaven. Siioh pray- ing! 0 , jay sou !;1 keep ii aver in thy memory! The Bishop preached • with power—it was powerful in simplicity. There was no show of learning, no saholnsticisin; siothinK but the • ’pure, simple, unctuous Word of God. 0 , how tho people shouted 1 It was like Peter's simple and yet mighty testimony for Jesus at Pentecost. By tho time the sermon was onded the assembled thousands woro ready for knee work; and I specially noticed that those outward, hindrances to lowly pros- tration before tho Lord woro, on this, oocasion, conspicuously absent Such 11 towing before the H ily One of Israel I never saw. President Stokes led the way into the straw,, followed by tho Bishop. Tho ministers wore all soon in train. The members of tho Associ- ation joined in the procession. The singers', ioo, jvent down. Then the whole assembly was quickly piostraliid. Tears, sobs', groans, were everywhere. M in y iii front of the platform fell on their faces, among them tho Pri'sidnnt, and othor members of Hie Association. Near where I bowed wore Alday, Wal- lace, Thorplojs'Black, Brown t.Murphy, HayB„and tht ly elected members, Vankirk and Yarii —all down before the' Lord, trembling and full ;l i-we, under tho weight of tho divine prt-senco. Now: it came to pass,'“while they all were; praying arid believing it would’ cbmb,| ciime the fire that they had on Joule j coat.” The great fire wayeH rolled out of Heaven upon G o d ’s pe o p le ministry! and laity were under the New Testa -;1 mcnl anhb'intini;.* . 0 ,’ how iho fire hlnzedi Tor hours thoy continued; under theie Pentecostal Qomniunica-l tior.s, praising, tho Lord v.ith joyful lips. Tho breaking of brbad was not tliou’giit of, so Bwcet wns tho broad of God . At tho hour for afternoon sorvicb, accord-, ing to the pre-arranged programme, no mnn could minijtor iii tho holy .place, and testimony for Jesus ruled the hour.' We have had lovb-feasts of thrilling interest nt Ocean Grove, but nothing^ approaching Within a thpuBand ibilguCB that afterndoo of Pentecostal testimony. By this time tho tidings of tiie mous- ing visitation had spread far and wide; The dwellers in tho modern Parthiaa,! Medios, Elams and Mesopotamia* wero; pburotl into the h'alldwed and vastly ex-f tended oirole.- Testimony struck tlienJ right and Jeft; T ^ e y fell on eVfery llaii crying “'God bo meroiful to ua'airiners I’? H o w m any wore saved that afternoon 1 could riot toll. It waa not necessary to run around tp gather up names. They stood beforo us, in burning phalanxes. At' niglit, the Pentecostal. battle rolled on. There was no prencbing, but testi- mony for Jesus. . Paper sermons would have made poor headway.; Theology, dispensed by gold-ringed schoolmen, will not do for a fullrorbod Pentecost. .The fire-line W i» fully establislied. Dre. Smooth-em down,Maguz.ine-Literature, Lpgicnm and Art-oratory did Mot put in an appcaranco, having heard of the prayer-breath'prevalaot at Ocean Orovs, and they hastened' to deliver thelrpet sermoha on other grounds, tis they were hired., SoirfB ..encampments are desper- ately in need of suchj service, and are Willing to pay liberally for. it, blit the Ocean Grovo Pentecost was entirely iin- suited to their m ooh-beam dissertations^ T h e ' field oxere.ise' of Zion’e forces that night was splendid. There was no ft»r o f fanaticism—tiro out ofheavon happily relieves tho ruling power of all oppressive'rtpprehensions on that sub- ject. A ll fastidiousness was burned up. It was.seen, to a demonstration; how tho fullest Gospel liberty, could co-exist with the fullest decorum. Then,..at an opportune • momont, some one filled with the Holy Ghost, called for another surrender to Jesus. Down thoy went in solid masses, calling loudly npon God; for salvation. The whole apace waa an altar; Zion’s endued sons and daugh: tors distributed themselves all over, helping souls to Jesus. The captains of fifties; and hundreds .whore holding meetings all around the. outskirts,'’pre- scribing a fiery circumference to belt the grand fire-center. They could b'o trusted now — fire dispels tormenting faar. Far into tho night tho salvation wprt continued; not until midnight could the valiant hosts be induced lo go to their tenta and cottagcs. Such was the first day of Pentecost fully come at Ocean Grovel And my dream is not ended. “ A h ,” but say some, “dreams go by-contraries.” .True, but there are exceptions to svery nslec 0, my Gad, may this fe nnt,! Before ad- judging this picture to he on ihe line of fanaticism,.or lo involve moral arid physical impossibilities, I entreat the spiritually-minded to ponder these pass* ages of Scripture,; asking .for tho .en- lightenment of the Holy Spirit. “ Is anything too hard for the Lord ?’’ If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye shall say unto thia mountain remove hence to yonder place; and it shall ho removed; and nothing shall s>e, impos- sible unto you.” . But, remember, that it 'is said in immediate connection : “This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." I w ill give you a picture of other Pentecostal days in m y next. G. H uoiiks . I ’m 5 . The writer is not of that number who cannot be happy without a dog in the: houso, in fact,, would rather dispouea with these animalB, ploauant and faith- ful though'they be, but tho proposal to ostracise thein all; ao far as Ocean Grovel is concerned, must lie painful to humane and tender hearted people who will givo. the subject a minuto’s thought. Sup-' posingfam ily to liavo a household friend of. this sort, what is to be done: with it when'the family shut up house ami go to the ees shore for tlia Summer? Is it Hi I10 turned out to starve, go mad or be killed ?. One sickens to tjiink otl tho many who are thus alsiiaed' ovary; Summer in'tho annual exodus from, home. Ocean Grove always seems like ii littlo Kingdom of H e im 11 corns down, in which everybody is good and kind, “pitiful and courteous,"-wor - thy of love and trust.. -Once, last Sum - mer, lying down in my room, I heard a sudden, shirp noise, is of. a log being hurt. . Instinctively I started up, and thon recalling myself, lay down again, saying to .'myself; “ There’s nobody in the place wlio would be guilty of cru- elty,” and to m y mind nothing could show a higher stato of Christian civili- zation. O f course, the flower gardens are very pretty and valuable,'but flowers have not feelings, and,-animal- have. Be- side, a little .care will suffice to keep' all these household peta in or viear their own homes, and peoplo who have them must be willing to keep watch over them, .TIumanitas, Woman’s Day. It is a fact, significant of tlio fulness of the times, that woman’s vilal con- nection with th'o living issues of the Church is always recognized at Ocean Grpyo, and, by the wise forethought of the President, a day ■ was accorded in tho grand council for representation oC the interests of tlio W o m a n ’s Foreign Missionary Society of ihe Church. No one better understands the move- ments and disposition of iho marching forces of tho Lord of Hosts than our honored “ President-General,” and wo folt that it was tho vory genius of tactics last Tuesday morning \yhon, in. the beauty of simplicity and godly sincerity, the modest -and 8 <veet-voiced women, led by Mrs. Bishop Harris, took thoir placesin the moving host of the militant Church, and, with oven step and shining eyo, encouraged eiich other to Ihe vie tory of faith, even the victory that over- comoth tho world. The morning, address, by. Mrs. Skid- moro was full of fervjncy and unction, and was followed'by a most'tender. per- sonal sketch' by Mrs. Somers, slater of the sainted Dr. Eddy, oF four young lady missionaries who had gone forih from hor own household, at the call of the Spirit, and whose lifo and character iind sacrifice woro most touchingly and delicately portrayed. Tho afternoon addross by Mrs. Chandler wr.s one cf the finest summaries of tho progress of Christian Missions to which we have ovor listened; replete with information, paejted with practical facts, yet rising iit times to tlio thrilling eloquence of impassioned argument and entreaty. In the confcrenco of workers that followed, led by Mrs. Botlom o, all felt llmt tho power of God was resting upon tho enlightened understanding, land Hint a fuller, deeper, aweetor consecration of life and labor wa3 (ho fruit of the day’s holy communion. ‘loorgs W.
