On behalf of the entire Grinnell College community, welcome to the 138th Reunion Weekend!

Reunion brings together alumni and friends from all over the country, and even the world, to participate in events, discussions, seminars, entertainment, and celebrations of the people, places, and principles which make us uniquely Grinnell.

This weekend is the result of months of work by many in the Grinnell College community: alumni volunteers, staff members, faculty, and students. We especially want to express a deep sense of appreciation for our dedicated reunion planning committees, who have worked diligently over the past year with the goals of providing you with this opportunity to reconnect with old friends, and experience firsthand, the Grinnell campus and community.

By returning to Grinnell for this milestone weekend, you are demonstrating your commitment to our Grinnell community. Active alumni are an essential part of Grinnell and your involvement and dedication helps to connect students of today to a rich history and a proud tradition of excellence. We greatly value your desire to help sustain, and enhance, Grinnell College for each other and for all our students.

She’s a Grinnell and Berklee alum, tours the indie circuit and releases albums through her ongoing eponymous project. Myers has toured nationally with Strahan and the Good Neighbors and The Youngest (Nashvilled). She currently plays with the Railhouse Band and The Lonesome Heroes (she is also their producer).

Jackie just released the album Third! whose radio ad-date of April 24 has already yielded plays by several radio stations across the country.

Chinese Student Association (CSA)CSA strives to enrich campus diversity and enhance cross-cultural understanding by organizing a diversity of Chinese cultural events and activities, including Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival, for a wide audience!

South Asian Student Organization (SASO)SASO’s main goal is to create greater representation for South Asian students within the larger community of Grinnell, and bring special events and festivals to campus. 3 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Nobody’s Perfect: A film by Dana Weidman ’85Bucksbaum Center for the Arts, Room 161After learning she had a genetic mutation that causes dilated cardiomyopathy, Filmmaker Dana Weidman traveled to Colorado to interview the doctor who identified the missing base pairs in her chromosome. In Nobody’s Perfect, Weidman explains how her family participated in research for twenty years and presents their experiences with genetic counseling. Although the precise genetic disease is extremely rare, the implications of this discovery could lead to a gene therapy that could prevent heart failure and heart transplantation.

3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. Liberal Arts in Prison Program: Panel DiscussionHarris CinemaIn keeping with Grinnell’s mission and core values, the Liberal Arts in Prison Program provides liberal arts education at a local prison and a juvenile detention center. Five years ago, the program inaugurated its First Year of College Program, which brings for-credit Grinnell courses to incarcerated students at Newton Correctional Facility. Join former incarcerated students Michael Cosby and Jason Darrah, program director Emily Guenther ’07, director of the prison program, and George Drake ’56, president emeritus and professor of history, for a panel discussion about the program’s impact.

10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Faculty Lecture featuring George A. Drake ’56, president emeritus of the College and professor emeritus of history: It WAS a Revolution! Harris Center, CinemaProfessor George Drake ’56, describing the talk he will give as the Honorary Faculty Lecture, “Three years ago, I was commissioned to write a biography of Grinnell’s greatest trustee, Joe Rosenfield ‘25. As part of my research, I have read all of the trustee minutes for Joe’s 59 years on the Board from November 1941 (Just before Pearl Harbor) until his death in 2000. One of the most arresting aspect of those minutes is the fact that the students were largely invisible until the late 1960’s. They appeared only as numbers (admissions and graduation) until the days of the graduates of 1967, the class that is being honored with its 50th Reunion this spring. Student issues began to dominate trustee meetings and student voices are recorded at almost every meeting. President Howard Bowen who, so far as the minutes tell the story, had not made a misstep now appeared out of touch, saying that he would not negotiate with students until their behavior improved. In fact, nobody realized what was coming as students and their issues would dominate trustee concerns at least until the mid 1980’s. The trustees, faculty and administration were swept up in something that few had anticipated and none knew quite how to handle. IT WAS A REVOLUTION!” Sponsored by the class of 1967.

Robert Hodierne: Vietnam War Photographs

Robert Hodierne ’68 was a 21-year-old freelancer when he made his first trip to Vietnam in 1966, leaving Grinnell on a one-way ticket at the end of his third year. After returning to graduate, he enlisted in 1969 as a soldier assigned to Pacific Stars & Stripes in Saigon, where he spent another 14 months. During those two tours he photographed combat in every corner of the country. His Vietnam photographs reflect Hodierne’s concern for the ordinary soldier, many of them his own age when he was there. Hodierne has had a distinguished career photographing other conflicts around the world. He teaches in the Department of Journalism, University of Richmond.

The exhibition is organized by the University of Richmond Museums, Virginia.

Using materials from the Special Collections and Archives, this exhibit explores the main figures of the Social Gospel Movement in Grinnell and how the movement affected the town and College.  The Social Gospel Movement of the late 19th century arose in response to the social and economic disruptions of the times. Grinnell became a center of this movement when George A. Gates became president of Iowa College and George D. Herron was appointed Professor of Applied Christianity. While Herron became nationally known for his fiery rhetoric, it was Gates whose Social Gospel ethos transformed the College.This exhibit was curated by retired Archivist of the College, Catherine Rod and student, Matthew McCarthy ’17.
