Gypsy Oracle Cards- 18th Century
"To interpret the cards, the Gypsy told of two things that had to be kept in mind: the image,
which "provoked feelings and memories in the heart and min"', and the sentence (the card's
title), which 'guided sensitivities and perception in the right direction'."
-Lo Scarabeo
Messenger or Message
An unexpected announcement or invitation. Awaiting results.
News via a telephone call or in this day and age a text etc.
However, generally, the news is verbal. Waiting for some results.
Look to the card beside it for an explanation as to the type of
message it is. You either will be receiving a message or you have
one to convey.
Reunion or Fidelity
Loyalty, honesty, unconditional types of love, like family. Strong
friendships, a loyal person or situation. A trusting friend. A
volunteer- offers help without expectation of reward.
Circumstances or surrounding cards may warn of a need for
caution, someone may be taken for granted here. Don't set
yourself up for abuse of kindness or a betrayal of trust.
Pag
e2
Foe or Rival
Foe can mean being your own worst enemy and the rivalry
might be self created, these are things to consider first.
Could also be a competition or a comparison, seeing things
from the other side of the fence. Do not make it about
comparing oneself to others or competing with the perceived
self and the true self.
Indicates that you are reluctant in asserting your rights and
standing up for yourself. Consequently, you are losing your
credibility and standing with others. Alternatively, this card
means that you need to be more aggressive. Balance means
you don't sit down when you should be standing up and vice
versa.
Also may suggest that you have neglected your duties or
abandoned your responsibilities. "Given up."
House
Family and emotional bonds.
Home, security. What is the sacrifice for that home and what
and who have you filled it with? Is there balance? Is the
security an illusion? What environment have you created and
do you perpetuate.
Could be some new project, perhaps one related to home or
somewhere you feel at home.
The house card also serves to represent your own soul and self
as a sort of metaphor, do you need to "clean house?"
A need to accept responsibilities and be more self-reliant. It
isn't all about meeting the expectations of others.
Pag

Represents the many hardships and cruelties that you
will experience in the world. More importantly, how you
handle them.
It could also represent that others are in despair and
denotes that someone around you will be in need of
your help. You'll know who it is right away.

frivolous choices or selfish choices where others aren't
taken into account and consequences aren't
considered.

Obligations, the delegation of authority.
You may feel that someone else has authority over your
life and dictates what you can or cannot do.
May symbolize your limitations and lack of
freedom/originality.
A reminder that there is a higher power that you have

Emotional situation involving feelings.

Unlike joyfulness this card is indicative of a more
"unknown" or unfamiliar crowd. The variables are more
unknown.
There is opportunity though, a chance to meet new
people and make new connections. Of course that can
go either way so there is a need for caution.
Pag
e9
Room or Visit
Company, meetings, errands, teamwork.
The act of receiving guests and being welcomed by
others.
Usually there is an element of surprise involved.
This card can represent an errand or organization of

Alternatively, it could mean you are isolating yourself
and rejecting outside influences.

Melancholy, depression, tears of pain.
Could indicate an upsetting time for you or a loved one
who is very depressed.
Feeling inexplicably under the weather. This shall pass, a
temporary state of mind.
May signify disappointments, consider whether they are
self perpetuated. There might be an Inability to connect
with others; feeling withdrawn and distant.
Remember, you cannot always win at everything. This
could be a perceived failure after a period of success
that was taken for granted. It is a reminder to be
grateful for what you do have rather than despondent
about what you don't.
Pag

Scholar or Old Man
Senior, retirement, longevity.
Wisdom or forgiveness.
Offering guidance to some daily problem but from a
more scholarly and less personal perspective. Book
smarts, over "street smarts."
If this is a person it may be someone who has a very
"BTDT" attitude and thus considers themselves superior,
or deep down is insecure about being an "old dog who
can't learn new tricks." S/he might be condescending or
patronizing while dispensing wisdom, you can learn
much more than they intended to teach you.

novels. Things need to be looked at realistically.
Pag

Frivolity or Inconstancy
Undecided, irregular, fickle, changing.
The flight path of the butterfly may seem undecided
and irregular, even frivolous but consider the migratory
patterns of Monarchs, the only butterflies that make a
two way migration. They are resilient and strong and
find their way over great distance and adversity.
Of course butterflies are representative of change or
may represent an idea coming to fruition after having
made it from chrysalis to butterfly. Make choices that
lead to growth.
Pleasure Seekers or Desire
Anxiety, longing, craving, wishful thinking.
Wishing or yearning for something that is seemingly out
of your control or just out of reach.
The hope of the hopeless, that if you just wish hard
enough or pray hard enough you can manifest
whatever you want without having to give anything.
Similar feeling to addiction, the feeling of being so close
to the "perfect bliss" but need just one more...or just
have to do this one thing...sooo close.
Be careful how you proceed, your choices will lead to
your delight or to your detriment.

Pag

Death
Farewell, finalization, endings, the answer, right now, is
no. Ends are followed by new beginnings.
A cycle card. It’s over. Saying good-bye. Time to move
on. Forget the past and head off into a different
direction.
It's not just about starting over, it's about starting fresh
with a new recipe. There is upheaval, yes. Take nothing
for granted and rebirth will follow. Take nothing with you
that will no longer serve forward progress.

Pag
e15
Old Woman
May be something from the past to incorporate into
your life.
Wise decisions.

spiritual are out of balance.
Possibility of using sickness as an excuse not to deal with

malady is about seeking attention or a hand-out.
The card is a reminder that life is too precious and that
you need to make the most of your time every day.
Positive outcome is a choice, as is staying sick.
Pag
e16
Falseness
This card is a warning against falseness of the type
where you never know what you're going to get. Like
when you're petting a cat and it's purring but then all of
the sudden he bites you seemingly out of the blue.
There is a certain level of defensiveness here but it is of a
protective nature.
A cat is a cunning hunter and as such, a patient
observer. This card is telling you to observe right now
and participate later.
Cats got a bad rap in the 1600's as they were thought to
be the familiars of witches. To the supernaturally
paranoid this card could be seen as a bad omen but to
some, cats are representative of seeing more than
most, gazing past the veil. They are mysterious and wise.
Journey
Travel. An actual physical journey, a journey of the soul
or both. The journey can pertain to the physical, mental
or spiritual paths or all three. Either way, growth is the
result.
The journey might be due to some emergency and will

pants" nature.
Signifies good fortune, self-discovery or progress.
Always a welcoming and harmonious change.
Pag
e17

Losing something, misplacement, swindle. A good time
to consider what you find "valuable" and how you
define "value."
This card signifies all that is stolen – does not have to be
physically taken. Theft goes on all the time. Spending
time with someone who drains you is a form of theft -
they are stealing your peace of mind.
When this card is next to the enemy card there is a
warning not to be careless with your valuables.
Obviously, there is a need for caution indicated here,
someone is trying or will try to swindle you in some way.

out strength you didn't even know you had, go with it.
Avoid giving in to fear of separation, you might find
you're better off in the end.

abandonment. Use that time in isolation to your
advantage with grounded introspection.
Differentiate between things and prioritize them with
your own needs in mind for once.

are some things that shouldn't change, like those things
you have fought hard or suffered for such as lessons
learned.
If you are wondering about a negative situation, it
doesn’t look like it will improve. To move forward,
accept accountability for your part and move on.
Stand tall, doing the right thing isn't always easy but you
know what's right.
Sorrow or Loss
Risk resulting in decline, decrease, losing. Learn from
that risk so you don't make the same mistakes again
and again.
It’s a no-go. Could be with relation to money issues or a

out of your control at this point look within to determine
if you're choosing it and why.
Pag
e23
Merchant or Profit
Gain, advantage, increase, freebie. Always looking for
more.
With regard to business aspirations and professional
goals it's time to be open to changes and looking at
things with a different perspective.
Alternatively, you or someone close to you may be
taking advantage of others or is being taken
advantage of. Someone is manipulating for their own

different perspective opens the door to getting the most
out of the situation.
Service

An opportunity to keep your head down and learn
more about humility, gratitude, respect and forgiveness.

There is braveness but it's coupled with carelessness and
the naivety of youth. A stage where one has gained
some knowledge but has little experience applying it so
it can become wisdom.

or chapel. Anyone involved in an organized belief
system. So in that context: Sexual repression, chastity
and abstinence.
Could represent last rites, perhaps metaphorically, and
there is a need for morality.
For those who don't readily accept the God formula
and related dogmatic principles the card is a reminder
to look deeply into our own practices and rites and
evaluate our ethical code to be certain we are on the
right path.
This card might also be a sign to visit whatever your
equivalent of a temple or church is, even if that means
going into a forest or climbing a mountain, it's time to re-
connect or discover new connections to your idea of
the Powers that Be.
