RETIREMENT OF MR A. P. CHILDS FROM THE NORTHERN WHIG

In this our 60th year of publication we would like to pay tribute to Mr Childs, who has overseen the printers side of this publication for more than half this time. Unfortunately Andy Childs is retiring this year and volume 21 will be the last he will guide through to

publication. The office will not be the same cheery place without him. He has been a

wonderful support and mentor to the several editors for nearly 40 years, having served in the Northern Whig for over 48 years.

The passing years have seen so many changes in presentation and typography from the

early volumes of bimonthly newsprint to the present quarterly Journal set to the standards of the European Association of Science Editors. The use of specialised biological nomenclature, tabulation and mapping, which can present difficulties with local printers, have all been readily coped with and special type provided when necessary. Mr Childs'

suggestions, advice and control of the workforce always lightened the editors burden. The introduction of new typesetting machinery and work schedules was never allowed to retard the procedure by which the Journal was passed from collected typescript through galleys and page proofs to publication, and the Journal was always delivered punctually.

The Committee wish to record their appreciation for all the valuable service rendered while Mr Childs has been Manager. It is our sincere hope that he will enjoy a happy retirement and will look back with pleasure on our long association.
