Do you know that your thoughts can be habits? Have you ever had a recurring thought that just seems to pop into your head for no reason? Some of these thoughts can be good! For example if you do something awesome and you think “WOW! I totally rocked that!” BUT when you find yourself having “self-defeating” thoughts such as “I never do anything right” or “nothing ever works out” then that is a pattern that you really want to break! These self-defeating thoughts can also be known as “limiting beliefs”. Any thought or belief that you have that does not support you in a positive manner is either a “self-defeating” thought or a “limiting belief”. When we really start paying attention to what we say in our own mind, most of us will realize that we really aren’t very nice to ourselves. For goodness sake! Would you EVER say those things to someone else? Then why would you allow yourself to talk to yourself that way?

When you become aware of your thoughts, you can take control! From now on, when you catch yourself having self-defeating thoughts or limiting beliefs, STOP! This may not be easy at first, but one you practice stopping the self-defeating thoughts, it will eventually become your new habit. Instead of allowing yourself to fall into the complete dialogue and letting your self-defeating thoughts run wild, you have the power to break that habit and routine! Don’t be hard on yourself if you allow the self-defeating thoughts to sneak back in once in awhile. Just catch yourself and start over. It’s just like riding a bike! If you fall down, just get back up and try again! The next step is to reprogram the self-defeating thoughts with positive reinforcement. Instead of just taking the action of stopping a self-defeating thought when it sneaks in, you will now not only take control and stop that thought, you will also take the next step and empower yourself with positive affirmations.

Creating affirmations can seem difficult at first. The purpose in the affirmation is to replace the negative thought with a positive statement. Practice creating your own affirmations for your personal situation. Below is a list that you can get started with! Choose any number of these daily affirmations • I am grateful I am alive • I am loved • I am honoring myself and choosing to be feel good • I am a child of God • I am experiencing energy and vitality • I am abundant • I am successful • I am safe • I am supported • I love and approve of myself • I trust myself • I forgive myself • I am creating more of what I want effortlessly • I have boundless positive energy within me • I am focused on a debt free lifestyle • I have something special to offer the world • My body is strong and healthy • I am happy and joyful • I am worth time and energy • I am worth investing in • I am worthy of love • I am smart • I am important As you move forward, please remember that making changes can be difficult. If you find yourself slipping back into the pattern of negative self-talk and self-defeating thoughts, don’t judge or criticize yourself! Just start over or re-commit thinking healthy thoughts. New routines take time to become “old habits”. The more you practice halting self-defeating thoughts and replacing them with positive affirmations the easier it will become.
