Retailing
• Retailing involves a set of business activities that adds value to the products
and services sold to the final consumers for their personal, family or
household use.
• Retailers play an important role in the distribution system by helping
manufacturers to reach out to the customers and at the same time, offering
an array of value added services like breaking bulk, providing assortment,
holding inventory, and providing information for their customers.

• The unorganized retail sector primarily comprises of the small scale retail stores, with littleor no standardisation, selling goods and services (ideally in fragmented quantities) to thelocal customers within a small geographical area or locality.
• There is hardly any use of technology or adherence to processes.
• Unorganised retailing, refers to the traditional formats of low-cost retailing, for example, thelocal Kirana shops, owner manned general stores, paan/beedi shops, convenience stores, hand cart and pavement vendors, etc. The Indian retail sector is highly fragmented with 97per cent of its business being run by the unorganized retailers.

• Organized retailing is the process of selling goods or merchandise all under
one roof in a fixed location such as a departmental store, hypermarket,
supermarket or even a convenience store.
• Organized retail also includes internet retailing, which is the process of
buying and selling products and services, such as COD, card on delivery, or
trial services, through the internet.

A number of factors have influenced dramatic
growth of retail sector
• Growing youth population, nuclear families in urban areas
• A growing middle class with rising incomes and the resulting purchasing power
• Higher brand consciousness have driven the demand for retailing.
• Opening up of FDI has created conducive regulatory environment for the sector.

supply-chain, R&D, innovation and new product development has fuelled the
supply side.

• All this translates to the many opportunities for the youth in the country. As per
a report by NSDC (National Skill development Corporation), India will need
around 56 million strong work-force for the booming retail sector.
• The sector will have one of the highest incremental human resource
requirement of 17.35 million by 2022, offering opportunities in sales,
merchandising, store management, central management and procurement.

• The latest announcement by the government to allow 100% FDI in retail (e-commerce,
wholesale and in the marketing of food products) has already indicated a surge in employment
opportunities in this sector.
