DANFOSS FOOD RETAIL SOLUTIONS FOR CO2 BASED COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION – A CASE STORY

Danfoss is supplying the Refrigeration Branch Control Solutions for CO2 based refrigeration plants, this article is the story of one of the leading OEM/Contractors in Denmark – Knudsen Køling – installing high-end equipment in new SuperBest-Prima Supermarket.

SuperBest Prima in Rødovre Centrum, Denmark.

This supermarket has just undergone a thorough refurbishment which has taken more than a year. Today the shop represents a 1900 m2 high profile supermarket. The shop includes all the new features for a perfect shopping experience, including entertainment for the kids and a very exclusive interior reflecting quality.

Refrigeration Plant from Knudsen KølingThe refrigeration systems have been carefully designed in order to create dedicated temperature zones – e.g. 16 oC in the area with refrigerated goods, and 12 oC in the area with vegetables. This is all part of the system of refrigerated cases from Knudsen Køling. The refrigerated cases for the supermarket are all completely custom designed

according to the specifications from the owner Mr. Michael Petersen.

In Denmark is the choice of CO2 as Refrigerant as natural as the refrigerant it self

Today hardly any supermarket is charged with artificial refrigerants. This is the case in Denmark as well as the rest of the Nordic Countries.

Beside the whish from the owners to represent a “Green Image” the Government “helps” with heavy taxation of HCFCs. Prices are approaching 100 Euro/kg, and the refrigerant charge was really becoming expensive.

The change towards CO2 has been easier than first expected. After initial trials the design has become well known to the leading OEMs and Contractors. Today they master the technology as any other commercial installation. The economical encouragement from the government was just the beginning – as it turns out CO2 saves money and energy – thus being a good investment on its own.

The Danfoss Food Retail SolutionDanfoss Food Retail has developed solutions for CO2 based refrigeration systems which suits the needs both at the OEMs and the Contractors. The designs have allowed Danfoss to use standard of-the-shelve equipment ensuring that it is well proven equipment that is installed in the plants. Today the most common plant type is Cascade Plants.

Knudsen has chosen the Danfoss EKC Series

The PAC is a cascade system with CO2for LT (DX) and MT using pump circulation. The condensation of CO2takes place in a plate heat exchanger (cascade cooler) evaporating R134 which is condensed in an air cooled condenser.

The Cascade Cooler is controlled by means of the new developed ETS means of the new developed ETS

Both the CO2 compressors and the R134a compressors are controlled by means of the Danfoss EKC 531D1 Pack Controller.

Knudsen Køling has chosen EKC 201 and EKC 414 case controllers. The choice of EKCs is because of the easy installation in each case allowing all wiring and testing to be done in the factory. As Knudsen Køling is responsible for both production and installation is the importance of a short and controlled installation period very clear. The cases just needs power supply and communication cable (beside the refrigerant connections) in order to be operative.

Everything is connected via LON bus to AKA 245 Gateway allowing for remote access and service to the plant. The master control function of the gateway ensures optimum economy and safety for the system.economy and safety for the system.

Green Image - at no extra costs!

The use of CO2 based refrigeration plants in Food Retail applications has proven to be almost cost neutral both in initial investment and operational costs. The change from artificial refrigerants towards CO2 is developing with remarkable speed. The start of this change was driven by government taxation of HCFCs in Denmark and Norway. The refrigeration branch was surprised to learn that even without the taxes on HCFCs the use of CO2 was both a feasible and an economical viable solution.

The status on CO2 in Europe is that several hundred supermarket installations are built with Danfoss systems. In certain regions hardly any new supermarket is build with other refrigerant than CO2. Further more, most of the larger Supermarket chains are building test stores with CO2 as refrigerant. CO2 is ranged in the same danger class as R22, R404 and other commercial refrigerants.

The drivers for CO2 based refrigeration plants are:Environmentally friendly:

- Neutral Ozone Depletion Potential - Neutral Global warming potential - CO2 is produced from air and will just leak back where it came from is produced from air and will just leak back where it came from is produced from air and will just leak back where it came from

Reduced costs:- Reduced running costs due to compressor efficiency and heat transfer coefficients- Reduced cost on refrigerants (CO2 is much cheaper - even in the high quality class).- Reduced size of components due to smaller sizes of pipes, valves, insulation etc.

Today we are realising that it do not cost more to be environmental conscious, actually it pays off to create and maintain a Green Image.

Stepper motor valve and an EKC 316 controller ensuring stable control of the superheat.
