Chilton’s newly elected Mayor, Cllr Tonya Duprey takes over the office from Cllr Elizabeth Bruce. At Chilton’s Town Council meeting, held on Tuesday 16th May, the newly elected Town Mayor for the municipal year 2017-2018 was selected, with Coun-cillor Tonya Duprey taking

if a resident is celebrating a 100th birthday or Golden Wedding Anniversary, contact the Town Council as per the details below. Mayor Duprey said: “I am honoured to be elected as Town Mayor for the forthcoming municipal year and look forward to an exciting twelve months. “My values go back to grass roots and I want to work with local residents regard-ing local issues affecting our town. “Rest assured, being a new independent Mayor I will not be taking a Mayor’s allowance or expenses, as I believe these funds can be better spent else-where within the town. Between Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May, an at-tempted burglary took place at Kirk Merrington Primary School. The offenders tried to enter part of the school but were unsuccessful in their efforts. DC Emma McCabe, who is leading the investiga-tion, would like to appeal for any witnesses to make contact with her. “The area around the school is popular with dog walkers and I would urge members of the public who have seen anyone suspi-cious in the area of the school to contact me,” said

DC McCabe.“It may be that witnesses have seen people prior to the date of the offence who they thought were acting strangely. “Although no entry was gained, we still take at-tempted burglaries very seriously. “I would also like to remind residents in the area to remain security conscious and ensure that their homes and vehicles are secure at all times.” Anyone with information can contact DC McCabe on 101 or pass information anonymously via Crimestop-pers on 0800 555 111.

Activi-ties include, courses, trips, holidays, parties, sport, fishing and gardening. It has no paid workers but it is run by a committee of members, assisted by vol-unteers registered and sup-ported by Stonham (part of

Home Group). They receive no statutory funding but raise money themselves by their own contributions and fund-raising with occa-sional small grants through the County Durham Com-munity Foundation and last year from Ferryhill Town Council. The group, ‘Buddies Be-friending’ is a newer group, based at the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Ayecliffe, funded locally by GAMP (Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership) and overseen by Sheila Pinkney. It aims to combat isolation and loneliness in older people and offers flexible, short term support. This can include help with shopping, attending social activities or simply taking the time to listen over a cup of tea. It also organises regular coach outings. Over 200 people have ben-efitted from the project in the last two years. After a presentation to the Positive Horizon group some members decided it would be a great idea for

them to provide the venue and a meal for the Buddies Befriending Group at cost price, which would not only bring the groups together, but would give a chance for the Positive Horizons members to practice the lessons learnt in their recent Food Hygiene and Healthy Eating courses. In addition, they have arranged to entertain them with fun chair exercises to old-time music before the meal and a short poetry reading afterwards, provided by two of the members. A spokesperson for the event said: “Positive Horizons is very excited by this new development and both groups hope it will lead to more joint activi-ties in the future.”For more information contact Carolyn Stephen-son of Positive Horizons on 07732 780386 or email [email protected] or Sheila Pinkney of Buddies Befriending on 01325 329933 or [email protected].

I’ve been living with Parkinson’s

nigh on two years

I try to keep smiling – I won’t give in to tears

Keep on the move - keep in the groove

Medication helps that’s for sure

Although we know there’s no cure

Day in day out I’ll keep trying

Exercise and dance, there’ll be no crying

Keep on moving – don’t let my limbs freeze

As I cope with this awful disease

I’ll do my best to live each day

Whatever life throws, come what may

I exercise with special rings

They help my movement, what joy brings

Designed by an Austrian who didn’t

want Parkinson’s to cheat him

Didn’t want Parkinson’s to beat him

It won’t cheat me – It won’t beat me

Deep in the recess of my mind

I am strong see what I find

Ten pin bowling, even Zumba

Doing the Salsa – doing the Rumba

I’ll enjoy my life – fight the strife

I’ve been living with Parkinson’s

nigh on two years

I’ll keep smiling – there’ll be no tears

Residents invited to shape the future of garden waste serviceResidents in Ferryhill and Chilton are being asked to take part in a valuable survey about their garden waste collection service. The survey is being carried out in order to gather feedback to help the council identify areas of improvement. The survey will be available on Durham County Council’s website between Monday 15th May and Friday 30th June. The garden waste collec-tion service is a popular and useful discretionary service for residents in County Durham. In 2015, Durham County Council could no longer fund the service and like many other local authori-ties introduced a subscrip-tion fee to ensure the service remained available. The fee applies to all garden waste collections, includ-ing the service operated by Teesdale Conservation Volunteers (trading as Rotters) and consists of 17 fortnightly collections per year.Alan Patrickson, head of projects and business services, said: “We’re inviting local residents to

help shape the future of the service, and to do that we need their views and opinions.“The survey is quick and easy to do online. Residents who require a paper copy will be able to pick one

up at their local customer access points, leisure centres, household waste recycling centres and li-braries.”The online survey will be accessible at www.durham.gov.uk/consultations.

Chapter Ferryhill & Chilton

In order to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week and to broaden students’ knowledge of the world of work, staff at Whitworth Park arranged for 20 lucky year 10 students to participate in an Apprenticeships Roadshow run by New College Durham.Students were able to participate in three dif-ferent workshops: Early Years Health & Social Care, Fabrication in Welding and Motor Vehicles. These workshops gave an insight as to what an ap-prenticeship is and also gave students a chance to interact with adults from the world of work. Obviously, such experi-ences will be most useful when it comes to making career decisions at a later date.Rebecca Jones, one of the

participating students, said: “I found the event really informative and it has helped me to think about what I want to do in the future.” Participant Shaun Williams said of the Fabrication and Welding workshop that it was “…very good, giving students the chance to actually try welding in order to expand their skills”. Mrs Coates, who organised the event said: “It is vital that our students get the opportunity to sample a range of careers during their school lives. “It is very difficult for them to make informed deci-sions at the end of year 11 otherwise.” The next careers milestone for year 10s will be when they all participate in a week of work experience during the summer term.

Apprenticeship Roadshow a success

Anton Muller (left) and Captain Rob Chismon shared an unbeaten second wicket stand of 76.

A winning weekend for Mainsforth CC

On Saturday 20th May Mains-forth’s 1st XI welcomed Seaham Harbour CC to Mor-rision Terrace. The heavens had opened earlier in the day so the umpires delayed the start by an hour due to standing water on the square.Skipper Rob Chismon won the toss and sensibly chose to bowl first. The home side’s opening attack of Anton Muller (2-31) and the excellent Curtis Bihari (3-20) were soon amongst the wickets with Seaham reeling at 42-5 at one stage. After another stoppage for rain, Chismon and Ryan Dawson entered the attack. Dawson bowled seven tidy overs finishing with 2-20 and Chismon wrapped up the Seaham innings with 2-15 with the visitors ending 96 all out. In reply, Mainsforth made extremely light work of the run chase. An excellent unbeaten second wicket stand of 76 between Rob Chismon (46 n.o) and Anton Muller (42 n.o) saw the side home to a nine-wicket victory: their first of the season.

The win gave the team 22 valuable points and lifted them off the foot of the table. The 2nd XI travelled to play Seaham 2nds on the same afternoon. Seaham batted first and were 138 all out. The pick of the Mainsforth bowlers being Adam Thirlaway (3-19), Will Reynard making his debut for the club took 2-10 and skipper Jamie Appleby took 2-14. In reply, Mainsforth lost early wickets and at one stage looked dead and buried at 51-7. But a 40-run 8th wicket stand took the side up to 90-8 with Phil Adsett con-tributing 32.A further 36 runs for the 10th wicket saw the side fall narrowly short of their target being bowled out for 130. Debutant Will Reynard top scored with an unbeaten 44.On Sunday 21st May the 3rd XI entertained Willington CC 3rd XI. Mainsforth batted first and posted a challenging 172-4 from their 40 overs with Adam Thirlaway top scoring with 53.

The visitors in reply were bowled out for 163 giving the home side an excellent win. Aaron Bromley (3-19) was the pick of the young Mainsforth attack. On Friday 26th May the 1st XI have a T20 game at home versus Willington with a 6pm start and on Saturday 27th May the 2nd XI are at home to Stockton CC with a 1pm start. Mainsforth Cricket Club would like to thank Paul and Kelly from Seconds Out boxing club and gym-nasium for kindly donating membership for the club’s overseas amateur Anton Muller for the duration of his stay this season. Seconds Out Gym is situated in the Ferryhill Hub and provided facilities for the area’s up and coming boxers. The club is currently trying to raise a sum of £8,000 to purchase a minibus to help with transport to and from events. Anyone who is interested in taking up a membership of the boxing club or would like to make a donation to the minibus fund can do so by contacting 07481 921287.
