Model Expo 2007 wascertainly the mostenjoyable Model
Expo for me personally duringmy time as Director. This yearwas our third year at theexcellent venue at Sandownand the show went togetherrelatively painlessly for thecommittee members. The thirdModel Expo at Sandown nowhas developed a wellestablished framework for the
organisation, set up and execution of the event. This framework is flexible enough to take on new ideas and
initiatives from all avenues. The single most important area that we can obtain ideas for
improving Model Expo comes from the general public. Model Expo is what it is today due to this feedback. However, the committee is under no illusions that we will be able to
please all people all of the time. Some of the ideas that are put forward are good ideas but are
unfortunately out of the scope of Model Expo financially or logistically. This is unfortunate but is a fact of life.
Model Expo 2007 saw the introduction of the custom madecomputerised booking in system.
This worked very well for its first Expo outing and assists greatlywith the back office administration and time required to run a successfulevent during the weekend. There were some minor glitches at thepresentation but these bugs have already been solved. Model Expo 2008presentations will flow better due to these improvements and again fromvarious suggestions from modelers and the public.
This year saw one of our largest attendances by the public. ModelExpo 2007 also hosted the largest numbers of Traders than ever before.Numbers of models in the competition were up slightly on 2006 and thenumber of displays was increased in number and variety. Theworkmanship that is evident in all these models must be seen to beappreciated
The demonstrations have matured into a set up that works well forthe public and the presenters. Each demonstration was well attended bythe public and club members all looking to learn a different aspect oftheir hobby.
Model Expo 2007 had something for everybody – competition, displays, and demonstrations. There were enough traders with a varietyof kits, tools, equipment, books etc to lighten the load in many walletsand purses. Of special interest this year were the aviation and militaryprints available for purchase.
The committee is already hard at work on the planning for ModelExpo 2008. This will be the 25th Anniversary of the event and we areattempting to make this year one to remember.
We have our work cut out for us here as we are working withinfinancial constraints and have seen many improvements already fromyear to year.
One of the areas we would like to focus on in 2008 is to make thisthe year of participation.
If you are a modeler, bring your model(s) along and enter them in thecompetition, not for the sake of competition but for the joy ofparticipation. Modelers and the public all enjoy seeing completedmodels regardless of whatever place they may or may not have
achieved. The enjoyment that you have in your hobby can be sharedsimply by participating and having your work on display for others toenjoy as well.
Please take this as an invitation to come along with your models andbe part of the Silver Anniversary Model Expo 2008.
Finally, I wish to thanks our Sponsors, Traders, Club members,Competitors, Demonstrators, Visitors and the Expo committee membersfor making Model Expo 2007 such an enjoyable event.
I hope to see you all at Model Expo 2008 and remember if you are amodeler, then bring along a model or two and share your enjoyment ofour great hobby.
