The 41st Riverland Wine Show has once again been a resoundingsuccess. Well supported, this year’s show has once again showcasedwines from the inland irrigated regions and remains an important forumfor the evaluation and assessment of these wines both stylistically andfrom a quality point of view.

The Wine Show Committee’s theme for this year’s show has been “ acelebration of excellence “, and this has certainly been the case with amedal strike rate of 51 percent. This is an outstanding and extraordinarilyhigh strike rate and reflects the passion, hard work, the quest for qualityand attention to detail put into these wines from the vineyard to thefinished bottle. The Riverland and inland areas remain an integral part ofthe Australian Wine Industry and it is heartening to see the qualityreflected in these wines across styles. It is my firm belief that the futureof the Australian Wine Industry is in producing high quality wines acrossstyles from our many winemaking regions.

A notable trend in this year’s show has been the strong performance ofa number of alternative or new varieties indicating the suitability of thesevarieties to our region and the ability of these Mediterranean varieties toproduce high quality wines.

Lastly, I would like to thank our Chair of Judges, David Morris, our paneljudges, fellow committee members, stewards, volunteers and others whohave all contributed time and effort to run another very successful WineShow. A special thanks to Rustons Roses for the use of their excellentfacilities for the duration of the wine show.

generosity and finish.12 Unfortunately these wines showed development and lack of freshness.13 Sound wines but generally lacking the fruit weight to counter the inherent Cabernet

tannin profile. A challenge for all warm climates.16 Top wines show the potential of the Mediterranean varieties in this district. Very good

The region definitely excels at making this style.25 Top wine a very good style. Code of Practice for the display of awards

1. Producers will only display awards gained from competitions authorised by theAWBC.

2. Producers will not use medals, stickers, symbols or other devices in order tomisleadingly convey the impression that the wine has received an award at anopen, objective and independent competition.

3. Awards received by an individual wine will bear the year of award and the classdescription and as a general rule shall only be applied to wines bearing the nameunder which the exhibit was entered. However, in recognition that a wine couldbe entered in a show before a wine has been finally allocated to a Brand,portability of an award so that it can stay with the wine which won it shall bepermitted providing it is allowed by that show.

4. Awards received by a class of wines (eg “Winemaker of the Year”, “MostSuccessful Exhibitor”) shall not be used to suggest the individual wine hasreceived any particular distinction. These awards will not be presented on thebottle in the form of a medal.

5. Compliance by a producer (including by subsidiaries or by associatedcompanies) with this Code of Practice is a prerequisite for entry to any show ofwhich the display of awards or medals are authorised by the AWBC for export toEurope.
