Cardiometabolic risk 01 As taller people may weigh more than shorter people on the basis of their height without this implying any detriment to their health, it makes sense to standardize body weight in relation to body height. BMI (Body Mass Index) is a height-adjusted weight index of this type. It serves as a measurement to assess health and nutritional status and is defined as: body weight in kg / (body height in m)2. Adults with a BMI over 30 kg/m2 are considered adipose (obese) according to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO). Adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 kg/m2 are overweight, whilst a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 indicates normal weight, and a BMI below 18.5 kg/m2 indicates underweight. For children, there are percentile curves related to age and gender. Percentiles involve percentage values. If a child's BMI is expressed in percentiles, this is stated in relation to the BMIs of the child's peer group. A BMI in the 50th percentile means that 50 % of children of the same age and gender have a lower BMI than the child concerned. The SDS (standard deviation score) is another method of representing percentiles. It measures how the weight of the child concerned deviates from the mean value for the child's peer group. Measuring a person's waist circumference makes it indirectly possible to determine the fatty tissue, also called "visceral fatty tissue" or "central fat", stored in the abdominal cavity. Numerous medical studies show that this abdominal fat is an indicator of increased cardiometabolic risk.

03

Metabolic syndrome (MSX) is an established predictor for both metabolic (related to metabolism) and cardiovascular (related to the vascular system) risk. For example, patients with a metabolic syndrome are three times more likely to suffer cardiac infarction, whilst the risk of developing Type II diabetes is as much as five times higher. MSX denotes the combined occurrence of defined cardiometabolic risk factors. These include an increased waist circumference, elevated blood sugar values, changed blood fats and elevated blood pressure.

In addition to body weight, body height is one of the basic physiological parameters of a human being. When measuring weight, it should be taken into account that weight is subject to minor fluctuations caused by food intake and digestion. For children there are percentile curves related to age and gender. Percentiles involve percentage values. If a child's weight is expressed in percentiles, this is stated in relation to the weights of the child's peer group. A weight value in the 50th percentile means that 50 % of children of the same age and gender are lighter than the child concerned. The SDS (standard deviation score) is another method of representing percentiles. It measures how the weight of the child concerned deviates from the mean value for the child's peer group.

Assessment of the 10-year risk of coronary heart disease calculates the probability of suffering a stroke or heart attack in the next 10 years. A points system with defined risk factors such as increased age, elevated blood pressure, too low an HDL cholesterol value or smoking is used for assessment.
