Mayo calls for levy action HOUSE of Travel Australiachairman and former HWT chiefBarry Mayo has called on Qantasand other airlines to incorporatefuel costs as part of their fares. He was responding to the fuelsurcharge cuts announce byQantas this week (TD breakingnews Tue) which he hailed as apositive move. However “the current fare andfuel surcharge structure stillmakes airfares unnecessarilycomplicated for the travellingpublic,” he said. “From a travel agent’sperspective fuel surcharges are

time consuming to process andcomplicated to explain to clients.” Mayo, who presides over Houseof Travel’s Australian businesseswhich include Fiji SpecialistHolidays, Pacific SpecialistHolidays, Asia Specialist Holidaysand TravelManagers, said thatcompanies and consumers arelooking for and strongly valuetransparency, particularly in thecurrent economic environment. “There’s no doubt the industrywould like to see all fuel costsincorporated as part of the airfare to make pricing moreimmediate and deliver greaterclarity to the consumer,” he said. Mayo also thanked Qantas forits significant reduction of fuelsurcharges, saying the carrier’smove was “not only valued butappreciated by industry players.”
