Cabinet approved the lifting of the restriction on the Switch product to the geographic areas after the Office of the Attorney-General recommended to the Office of the Prime Minister to lift the restriction.

Switch was only allowed to be used in towns and a small radius surrounding towns after the government decided that Switch can continue operating but under a new set of restrictions, which were imposed in February 2007.

“On 24th March 2009 Telecom Namibia obtained a Board Resolution of the NPTH holding company. The Board resolved that it is satisfied that there is nothing illegal and untoward with Telecom Namibia’s Switch (CDMA Technology) product and has no objection that the geographic restriction be lifted and the product be re-launched,” reads a Cabinet resolution sent to the media. The launch of Switch in November 2006 was fiercely opposed by the country’s GSM mobile operators,

which complained that it was providing a mobile service under a fixed telephony licence.

Under current legislation, Telecom Namibia does not need a licence from the regulator, the NCC, to offer specific services but needs authority to use frequency bands over which the NCC has control. Telecom obtained spectrum in the 450MHz and 800MHz bands in February 2005.

Plans are now in full swing to re-launch the Switch product countrywide.

Government lifts Switch restrictionThe government of Namibia announced the lifting of the restriction on Telecom Namibia’s Switch, a CDMA-based mobility service, on 12 May.

“It’s a good thing because now all Switch users can call wherever they're in the country. It’s also affordable and you don’t have to use two cellphones anymore.”

“It’s great news indeed! Now we can stay in touch with our loved ones in any town, because the restriction on Switch is gone.”

“Switch is just first class and unbeatable!”

“We're so happy about this wonderful news. Switch isn't that expensive at all and elderly people like us can also use a cheap service like Switch.”

“For me as a Switch user this is great news. Telecom Namibia is really trying its level best to keep its customers happy.”

Telecom Namibia now offers a low broadband package at N$199 a month (and includes a 2-year contract) for speeds up to 64 kbps. A customer is charged an additional monthly rental fee of N$83.90 (VAT Excl.) for voice lines on top of the data charges.

The theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which is usually held on 17 May is “Protecting Children in Cyberspace.”

It’s obvious that in this fast changing world of information communication technology, more and more young people are frequent users of the internet and mobile devices.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says that while on the one hand the internet may be an invaluable tool for young minds to grow as they seek information and build networks, on the other side of the coin they are the most vulnerable to exploitation.

“Without safeguard, their precious lives are at grave risk in the vicious world of cybercriminals and paedophiles that prey on easy targets,” says Ki-moon.

It is therefore important for all stakeholders to ensure that children

can safely access the Internet and its valuable resources without fear of falling prey to unscrupulous predators in cyberspace.

In view of this, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union Hamadoun Touré says protecting children in cyberspace is everyone’s duty.

“Let us resolve to protect our children in cyberspace and promote their inalienable rights to access information and knowledge in a safe and secure environment,” says Touré.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2009 should therefore be celebrated this year with the commitment of making cyberspace a safe place for children, where every child can gain the full potential of ICTs.

Telecom Namibia celebrated the day at A. Shipena Secondary School in Katutura, Windhoek, at the occasion of the 5th anniversary celebration of Xnet Trust, which was created to promote internet connectivity at schools across Namibia.

“I've a 3G EVDO (EC226 USB) mo-dem for internet service, as well as CallMaker telephone and a fax line from iWay. As a final year student at the Polytechnic of Namibia and

an SME entrepreneur in Renewable Energy Products and Services I find these services affordable and very efficient for researching information and accessing my emails on a 24/7 basis. With iWay’s services I don’t have to rush to the bank every time, because I do internet banking online.

Jiang Xian BingInterpreter

“As a Chinese - English interpreter, I'm using Telecom Namibia’s post-paid 3G-EVDO modem since last year. I mostly use this service to browse the internet and communicate with my family and friends in China. I got to find out about this service through a friend of mine who told me to come to iWay for affordable internet connection service. My advice to other people who may be interested in the same service is go for the internet connection that caters for mobile business executives.”

Powell Muteka Technical ManagerL.P Tech Computers

“From iWay I have the ilink service that offers me fast internet and e-mail for the past 10 years. I believe I was one of the first customers to sign up for iWay when the service was intro-duced in Tsumeb. What I enjoy the most about this service is that you can connect without any problems. I feel it’s a service designed for any Na-mibian who wants to be connected to the Net.”

Nancy Mupiya Operations DirectorBenguela Energy Corporation

“With ilink imail (email only) and ilink maxi (internet plus email/web-site address) from iWay, my busi-ness is enhanced as I can send and receive information in real time. One

of the rare benefits is that I can tem-porarily keep my permanent records of up to 50 mega bytes of all my communication online, until I make time to move it to my permanent disk. My advice is use the ilink services because it’s a powerful and low cost communication tool that can truly enhance your business model. Another tip is always follow-up on your telephonic conversations with an e-mail to formalise your verbal communication.”

with Bettina Kakuenje

What’s your job all about? My key roles are to develop and implement pricing and tariff strategies, ensure competitive and cost effective pricing for Telecom Namibia, monitor pricing and tariff developments locally and internationally and develop pricing and tariff systems and models.

What is your typical work day like?Anything from writing pricing proposals, providing pricing related support to the business and, my goodness, one meeting after the other!

What makes you tick?I’m thrilled when I've the opportunity to share my gifts to help someone else.

What is your secret to success? The more positive you’re, the better your life will be!

What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?Don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself, realise that you’ll never be able to please everyone and don’t be afraid to say ‘I don’t know.’

What do you do for fun?I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, playing netball and simply just relaxing at home.

What book(s) do you like to read?I haven’t done it in a while.

Any words of wisdom to aspiring youngsters? The only way to get to the top is by studying, studying, studying... I can’t emphasise it enough.

What’s the one thing that people don’t know about you?I’m actually a very shy person.

What things are the most important to you and why?First, something to wake up to every day and look forward to accomplishing because having a mission for your life gives your life meaning and purpose. Secondly, knowing the difference between right and wrong and having something to stand for.

Have you ever wondered who’s working behind the scene to provide inputs for pricing for Telecom Namibia’s products and services? Well, one such person is the company’s Pricing and Tariffs Analyst, Bettina Kakuenje. telewave asked her the following:

Mario Nailenge, founder and executive chairman of the Academy, strongly believes that this iWAY website can boost his soccer academy’s reputation if effectively used.

“The website will also open new doors for many young Namibian players through valuable links to the rest of the world through the internet,” he said.

“It is all about global networking and making our young soccer members known locally and internationally

with websites.”

The website will provide young soccer players an opportunity to showcase their skills and impress the national selectors. It offers links to the academy photos gallery, history and sponsors acknowledgements.

MANSA says it currently caters for over 500 players between the ages of 7 and 23 years. The academy is realistic about their chances of making an impact in the Namibian leagues in the near future.

New website to spur young soccer players

The Mario Nailenge Soccer Academy (MANSA), which helps young players to succeed in the game of soccer, recently applied for a new iWAY website, www.mansa.iway.na, and got it for free from Telecom Namibia.

“Squash is just a passion for me and I love this sport,” says 13-year-old Vulika Endjambi of the Namibian Squash Association, who was recently sponsored by Telecom Namibia to participate in the Annual South African Schools Squash festival in Bloemfontein, South Africa from the 30 April to 3 May, 2009.

Vulika, a Grade 7 learner at Highlands Christian School in Windhoek, was nominated to represent Namibia at this prestigious event. She started playing squash four years ago and is now part of the Junior National Squash Team.

“Vulika is a natural squash player; she learns quickly and has the right attitude for this sport. I was really happy for Vulika that a big company like Telecom Namibia supported our association,” said Tyc Kakehongo, her coach and also the National Development Coordinator of the Namibian Squash Association.

The country’s telecommunication company has always been keen to sponsor junior players in different sports codes to help them realize their dreams at an early age.

Whether using a legacy PBX (public branch exchange) system or one based on Internet Protocol system, most telephone networks generate call detail records (CDR). Usually these come at the end of the call, but with modern developments, this data is now available during the call. Information generated by Call Detail Records includes time, date, call duration, number dialed, caller ID information, extension, line/trunk location, cost, call completion status and more. Knowing this data can be invaluable to a business providing insight into phone use, employees, sales and traffic trends, and so much more. Call records produced by the PBX are transmitted via serial port to a buffer, where they are temporarily stored until retrieved by call accounting software. Since they provide a reliable method of safely transferring information to

call accounting or telemanagement systems, call record buffers have long been broadly accepted as the preferred storage device as a safeguard against cases of delayed call collection or communication failure. The greatest benefit of CDR is perhaps in telecom expense management. Call detail records, both local and long distance, can be used for usage verification, billing reconciliation, network management and to monitor telephone usage to determine volume of phone usage, as well as abuse of your company’s telephone system. CDR’s are an asset in managing long distance telephone costs and aid in the planning for future telecommunications needs. Identifying seasonal call traffic can be invaluable for staffing purposes, marketing efforts, and the records themselves can be beneficial

in call verification if a caller is harassing staff over some dispute. Once you have a call accounting system in place, review all the CDR’s for accuracy. Those records can then be used to verify costs and usage; resolve discrepancies with vendors; disconnect unused service; terminate leases on unused equipment; deter or detect toll fraud of long distance services; and negotiate the most cost-effective call routing. By choosing a secure call accounting system, CDRs can be collected for pro-cessing at a centralised corporate site for any sized network from both legacy and IP phone systems in real-time. CDR collection can be accomplished via the corporate LAN or over the Internet using encryption technology. Encrypted CDR collection via IP enables real-time processing of call data enterprise wide.

and why are they invaluable to your business?
