Middle of Surah Baqara

Ayat 142 14!

ne of the fundamental reason that the +e&ish ommunity of Arabia deided to

instrutions &ere same &hih Allah ga%e to Musa #A S$ 06he sharia &e follo& a lot ofit is a ontinuation of the sharia of Musa #A S$0So as part of it Muhammad ##SAW$$

used to fast on the same days as the +e&s( he used to pray in the same diretion as

the +e&s did and e%en laimed the day of ashura the day of %itory of Musa #A S $ as

the day of fasting and elebration for the Muslims so there is a lot of parallel 0

Allah A,,a&a--al e.poses in surah baqarah that there &as a )no&ledgeable group

So in this surah &hat Allah A,,a&a-al does is that he e.posed them( they atually

start blaming +ibreel #A S$ that he must ha%e gone to the &rong address0

Allah defends +ibreel#A S$ in this surah

Say: Whoever is the enemy of Jibreel -- for surely he revealed it to your heart by

Allah's command, verifying that which is before it and guidance and good news for

the believers.

Whoever is the enemy of Allah and His angels and His apostles and ibreel and

!ee"aeel, so surely Allah is the enemy of the unbelievers.

And Allah reminds them that if there is any oune of sinerity that He##SAW$$ is not

from another family you ome from the same father /brahim0 So the ayat of baqarah

started reminding the +e&ish ommunity about the legay of /brahim #A S$0

What does Allah do? He hanges the qibla

to pray to the )aaba in a &ay that the )aaba is in front of

Him#S A W$ and Alaqsa is in front of Him#S A W$ (they are lined up together0

Although original instrution &as to pray to Alaqsa(He #S A W$ still has the house

built by His father /brahim #A S$ in front of Him#S A W$0

When He goes to madina that is impossible beause &hen he prays to&ards alAqsa

Allah gi%es Him #S A W$ the instrution to turn His ba) and remar)ably you )no&

He will to a Way that is straight.

doing good things and yet &hen it omes to e%en the most fundamental of )no&ledge

the doors are losed( they are refusing to thin)( refusing to &ant to learn (that

beomes a problem on the other hand0

We &ere made the middle nation( the nation that find the balane bet&een t&o sides(

the side of )no&ledge and the side of ations(

that=s one of the many benefits of Allah alling us the middle nation 0

8o& &hy &ere &e made the middle nation( you &ould thin) that this is ause for

elebrations( you are finally made a middle nation yes thats A&esome but Allah ne%er

gi%es an honor( He ne%er gi%es a position e.ept that He brings it &ith a lot of

against them beause if &e are not &itness against them they &ill be &itness againstus( it=s either one or the other( &e going to ourt either &ay ( &e ha%e to deide &hih

ayah0 Similar ayat ha%e ourred in the similar plaes in 5uran ne of the poets of

Muhammad #SAW$ among his ompanions Hassan /bn e Sabit ( beautiful %oie(He

#SAW$ used to ha%e Hassan ibn e sabit reite poetry to fire the troops up &hen they

&ill go on military e.pedition0 He #SAW$ used to lo%e him so muh that one time He#SAW$ alled Hassan ibn e sabit and said 3Hassan reite 5uran to me0Hassan ibn e

sabit &as sho)ed 3messenger of Allah you &ant me to reite 5uran to you it &as

re%ealed to you( He #SAW$ said but / lo%e to listen and so he starts reiting 5uran

he starts reiting surat un 8isa the forth surah and he is reiting and Messenger

#SAW$ is en-oying the reitation and he gets to an ayah

Ho& &ill it be &hen &e bring a &itness against e%ery nation( &e &ill bring

you#meaning Muhammad #SAW$$ as a &itness against these nation# meaning

Muslims$

Hassan loo)s up ( he loo)ed at the fae of the messenger #SAW$ His fae &as

drenhed &ith tears and He #SAW$ saying stop stop / an't ta)e any more0

What does it means that messenger &ill be a &itness against us ? you )no& &hat that

means ? it means the messenger of Allah #SAW$ before he left this &orld ( &hen His &orldly life that omponent of His life ame to an end He too) a &itness from all of

us( did i deli%er the message?? Did / do my -ob? And &e all testified as an mmah 00

6hese people / left them a -ob( they )ne& this boo) and they did not arry it( it did

not reflet in our personality ?? 6he mouth opened but it ne%er had the &ord of Allah

on it0

ne of the sariest plaes in the 5uran Allah A,,a &a--al tal)s about His messenger

##SAW$$ and

6he Messenger &ill say on that day My Master this nation of mine abandoned 5uran0

8o& / &ant you to appreiate the &eight of these &ords so / am going to s)ip a little

bit and go on ne.t ayah and share something &ith you( you )no& the qibla -ust

hanged right 8o one here &ill thin) it is a small e%ent( billion of people on the

earth for generations to ome from that time no& &ill be praying in different

diretion beause of that one deision and no& loo) &hat Allah says

We have certainly seen the turning of your face, * !uhammad/, toward

the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a (iblah with which you will be

pleased. So turn your face toward al-!as&id al-Haram. And wherever you

believers/ are, turn your faces toward it in prayer/. $ndeed, those who

have been given the Scripture well "now that it is the truth from their

7ord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.

6he Messenger##SAW$$ is in madinah He is still praying to&ards Al aqsa his ba) is

to&ards Ma))ah and He misses the house that his father built( it hurts Him that He

has to turn his ba) to&ards the house built by /brahim AS0 /t hurts His feelings but

He does not omplain to Allah ( you )no& &hat He does he loo)s at s)y that=s all He

does0 And Allah re%eals the ayah &hih says

We #SAW$ you fae turning to the s)y

8otie lo%ed one among eah other( &hen you go home( if somebody really lo%es you(

your mother really lo%es you (your &ife really lo%es you #sometimes$0/f there is an

e.pression your fae that is a little bit different your mother &ill say something is

&rong (you &ill say nothing maa nothing( she &ill say no no something is &rong (/

an see it in your eyes0 And you &ould say / see in the mirror / see my eyes( / don=tsee anything &hat do you see?? But that=s the nature of someone &ho truly lo%es0

6he messenger #SAW$ did not omplain ( did not ma)e dua all He did &as loo) at s)y

and the ayah is re%ealed of the 5uran that We #SAW$ your fae turning to the s)y

then for sure We s&ear by it( there is no doubt &hat so e%er that &e are turning your

fae (We are turning you in a diretion that pleases you 0Allah is telling His

messenger #SAW$ that this qibla has hanged se he #SAW$ ould be happy (that is

ho& muh He lo%es His messenger#SAW$0 and imagine that messenger #SAW$ (he

did not ha%e to as)( ompare this to Musa AS (read surah 6aha (read surah

Shu=araa(read them see ho& muh musa As As)s Allah

h Allah they ha%e got a rime against me ( they gonna go )ill me( gi%e me Haroon (

my tongue &on=t mo%e( he has got a list of omplaints( he has got a fe& problems

before he goes ba) to 7gypt( Allah ta)es all of those omplaints and addresses

them 0 But &ith His messenger #SAW$ it=s something different( He did not e%en ha%e

to open his mouth ( He -ust loo)ed up and billions of people &ill pray in a different

diretion( so this man #SAW$ &ill be pleased0 6hat=s the relationship Allah has &ith

His messenger #SAW$( and if that messenger omplains against you and me( &hat

la&yer you and / going to get?? &hat ase are &e going to ha%e ?? We ha%e no ase

left

And thus we have made you a &ust community that you will be witnesses

over the people and the !essenger will be a witness over you. And We did

not ma"e the (iblah which you used to face ecept that We might ma"e

evident who would follow the !essenger from who would turn bac" on his

heels. And indeed, it is difficult ecept for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. $ndeed Allah is,

to the people, 8ind and !erciful.

And &e did not )eep you to&ards alaqsa e.ept to see &ho &ould really follo& the

messenger #SAW$( it &as a test of loyalty 0ho& it &as a test of loyalty?? 6he muslims

in madina &ere used to pray to&ards aqsa e%en before /slam( 8o& they ha%e toturn (it=s a test of their loyalty (6he muslims that &ere in ma))ah &ere used to pray in

&hat diretion? to&ards the qibla#)aaba$( but &hen they ame to madina they ha%e

to turn their ba) to&ards qibla ( it=s not -ust the prophet #SAW$ turned His ba) but

His ompanions ha%e to turn their ba) too0 but no& they ha%e to ma)e their hoie

bet&een &hat they ha%e been doing their entire li%es and follo&ing this man #SAW$

and Allah said / ha%e put this in plae so that / an test e%erybody 6he muha-iroon

beautiful

6he yahood &ere so offended that the qibla hanged (they ame up &ith taunts for

the muslims(so the say to the muslims ( Heyy you ha%e been praying in the &rong

diretion all these years han( all those prayers nothing ounted (and some muslims

arabi says( the arabi says that Allah &ill ne%er &aste your faith0

and there is a onsensus among the ompanions of the prophet #SAW$( and the

onsensus among e%ery sholar that /man means prayers in this ayah( /man usually

means faith0 but the question is Allah ould ha%e said salat( Allah ould ha%e said

that Allah &ould not &aste your prayers but He said Allah &ould not &aste your

/man ( you )no& &hy ?? Beause to Allah your salat and your /man are one and the

same thing ( thereisno differene ( /f there is no salat ho& an be there /man( that is

one and the same to Allah0

ertainly Allah is espeially &hen it omes to all people He is ompassionate and

meriful (Ra=auf in arabi is suh a beautiful &ord ( it means someone &ho )no&s

&hat you are going through( Allah says He )no&s &hat you are going through He)no&s the troubles you ha%e( you )no& &hen you try to tal) to somebody about your

problems the first thought that ome in your mind that he is not going to

understand ( he does not understand &hat / am going through (Allah lets you )no&

about himself that He is Ra=auf ( if there is no one &ho )no&s &hat you are going

through( He does He is Raa=uf (Raheem0 What a beautiful onlusion to us being

inaugurated as an ummah( but no& / &ant to share &ith you a onluding message0

What is the mean that &e ha%e beome an mmah and &e share this responsibility??

/t means many things

but / &anna lea%e you &ith one ation item ( one thing

6he messenger deli%ered the message to us and that message in summary is Allah=s

boo)( He #SAW$ deli%ered that boo) (His #SAW$ life mission &as to deli%er this boo)

to the best of His ability and He did His -ob( He finished His -ob (you and / not only

ha%e to deli%er this boo) but to represent it=s teahing in our harater ( not only that

but to be loser to Allah &hat better &ay to get lose to Allah by uttering the &ords

that He himself ga%e you to utter 0 / an ome up &ith a &ay to praise Allah on my

o&n but / ll ne%er be able to ompete Ho& Allah praises himself( / an ome up &ith

my o&n &ays for as)ing Allah for things ( but / &ill ne%er teah myself a better &ay toas) that the &ay Allah told me to as)( as) li)e this0

if Allah says as) li)e this you )no& li)e Adam AS( deep trouble sent do&n to the

earth( he has got to as) for forgi%eness( but Allah says He is so meriful (Adam AS

might ome up &ith his o&n &ay of as)ing for forgi%eness( but you )no& &hat Allah

said that / &ill tell you the right &ords for as)ing forgi%eness

:irst he said say this( one you say this / &ill aept your tauba ( that=s Allah >s boo)0

6he bottom line / ha%e to share &ith you today( one of the big differene bet&een us

and Bani srael that they &ere nationalisti that )ept them from the truth( Allah made

this guidane for humanity you )no& &hat that means ( &hen you and / say 9A/9AH

/99A99AH there is nothing bet&een us stronger than this )alma( it is thi)er than

blood( it is thi)er than the olor of my s)in it is thi)er than the ountry of my

origin or the aent of my tongue it is thi)er than the origin of my anestors( none of

its rele%ant no& ( &hat is rele%ant no& is that you and / share 9A/9AH /99A99AH(

that is this ummah ( thats &hat that means( and the &ay in &e )eep our unity intat

and the &ay )eep that unity strong ( Allah a,,a&a-al gi%es us a system by &hih &e

an stand li)e a unified army e%ery fe& hours standing in a ro& not by ran) of age or

olor (-ust b 9A/9AH /99A99AH you stand in a ro&( you dont get ahead of the other brother ma)e straight line( and you do &hat &hen you get united you reite Allah=s

&ord (so if you and / stand in salat and &e do not understand Allah=s &ord (&e listen

to the 5uran being and &e don't get it( it=s not our fault( &e are not arab(/ am not

arab either (it=s not our fault the %ast ma-ority of this ummah is not arab(so easy

argument is that Heyy / am not arab it=s not my fault (that=s &hy / don't )no& the

5uran that=s &hy / listen to it and sounds )ind of nie (but / don't )no& &hat that

means( / ll -ust read translations( honestly as) yourself this question

Who in the &orld is going to &rite a translation that &ill ompete &ith Allah=s &ord??

Who is going to do that?? &ho is going to translate the beauty( the perfetion ( the

guidane ( the strength?? the effet of Allah=s &ord(these are Allah=s &ord( there are

no alternati%es( / am trying to translate the ayat for you but you got to taste that

s&eetness yourself( &hen that omes to mind and &e all understand that learning

this language for the sa)e of being able to say to Allah (/ didn=t learn this language so

/ tell you that the greatest ontribution to the study of arabi language &as made by

non arabs( you )no& the first ompilation of arabi &ord &as done by a man

Seeba&ay( He ompile arabi grammar as &e study it today &as non arab( thegreatest mufasiroon &ho tal)ed about the linguisti beauty and perfetion of the

5uran ( they &ere non arabs( the %ast ma-ority of this ummah population &ise is non

arab and the ma-ority of sholarship of this ummah is non arab -ust by statistis (

some of our greatest sholars are sitting far from arabia to this day( &hat Allah did is

remar)able He too) arabi language and instead of ma)ing it the language of the

people from a ertain rae from a ertain ba)ground ( He made it the language of

farsi omes from "ersia( Bilal al Habshi is from Abyssinia ( but &hen they spea)

muslims( it=s a fundamental of all muslims ( at least at the le%el that you an en-oy
