Public Health Responsibility Deal Health at Work Network Partnership

The following case studies were submitted by Responsibility Deal partners at this event. Dame Carol Black, Expert Adviser on Health at Work to the Department of Health judged CTC Physiotherapy’s case study as the best on the day.

Introduction CTC healthcare have developed, delivered and evaluated a health and wellbeing pilot project for over 300 office based employees at an international gas company. Aim: Improve the physical, social and psychological wellbeing of employees within the 6 month project. Responsibility Deal Pledges addressed by this project: H4 – Implement measures for encouraging healthier staff diet. H6 – Offer staff health checks. P4 – Promote physical activity in the workplace.
Project Design o Participation in the project started with health checks (assessing
cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, body composition, stress, anxiety, depression and physical activity levels.
o The project involved multiple health intervention promoting health and wellbeing within the workplace .
o Re-screening of health parameters allowed for a rigorous analysis of the changes in biopsychosocial wellbeing and recommendation for maintenance and legacy of the health and wellbeing project.
Key Results & Main Outcomes • 161 employees participated in the health screening • 29 employees were provided with G.P referral letters based on
their health check results for blood pressure, cholesterol & blood glucose
• 30% increase in individuals with an ‘active’ physical activity index. • 18.5% decrease in individuals classed as having hypertensive blood
pressure. • 75% of employees attending the stress reduction course improved
their stress classification on the DASS questionnaire.
PROJECT BENEFITS! • Development of a ‘healthy’ working environment! • H4 pledge - On-site champions driving the legacy of daily initiatives such as
fruity Friday (promotion & availability of fruit, free for staff every Friday). • H6 pledge – Preventative referrals and advice provided via health check
consultations. Health checks are now an annual event! • P4 pledge – Immediate health benefits from daily walk 4 life promotion. Local
success of the accelerometer challenge has created a national initiative.

2012 highlights We organised the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) - a 16 week pedometer virtual walking challenge aimed at achieving at least 10,000 steps per day. We used the competitive angle to engage the Sales teams, who are not site based resulting in 238 of them signing up .
In aid of Sport Relief, a mile long walking route was set up at our Slough site, with £2 donated to the charity every time an employee completed the mile.
Various Games 4 Life activities were organised across sites, including a golf tournament and “Go Ape”.

2012 highlights We have removed all artificial trans fats from our entire product portfolio. Over 99% of Mars’ entire retail portfolio meets 2012 salt reduction targets. We have signed the calorie reduction and have committed to stop selling chocolate products with more than 250kcal globally by the end of 2013. We have signed the new fruit and veg pledge, which will be delivered through new product development and education campaigns.
2012 highlights New pledges signed on smoking cessation, staff health checks, young people and mental health adjustments.
We took part in the Government’s national Stoptober campaign across our sites, with charity match funding offered as an additional incentive.
