IN COLLEGE• Have a guess at how much is spent on cleaning the

College!

Don't Litter! The answer is approximately £500,000 across all venues!

QuestionsWhere does the money come from to pay for cleaning the litter?

You/me, the taxpayer - increasing the amount we pay in Council Tax.

A very small amount comes from fines although councils are increasing activity in this area.

Don’t be tempted, students have been fined in the surrounding area!

QuestionsWhat were the tourists views of litter? What are the possible implications of this for the country?

That the country is dirty – a reputational issue. When a person has a complaint/issue, it has been found that they will tell at least 10 people.

This could impact on the number of tourists visiting Britain – a multi-billion pound industry and the amount of money we make as a country (known as GDP – Gross Domestic Product).

Ultimately, we pay in the end through either government cuts or tax increases

QuestionsHow does litter impact on the College and the surrounding area?

Negatively!a. The College spends £500,000 on Cleaning. Couldn’t we spend

some of this money to buy more computers/ books/ equipment etc?

b. With over 2000 students accessing the College each day, a small number of students litter the surrounding areas of the College which can lead to complaints and reputational issues for the College and for you!

c. Visitors, employers and College guests notice the College environment. Litter and cigarette ends are not welcoming and impact on the College and the people of Tameside
