Winter PSSA Sport Trials Teachers will be trialling children from Years 3-6 for Winter PSSA teams of girls’ and boys’ soccer, rugby league and netball this Friday 1 April. There are limited places available in each team and we request that parents discuss the prospect of missing-out

with their children to help avoid too much disappointment. The PSSA interschool sport competition commences Friday 6 May. Students not participating in the PSSA competition will be working with coaches in a sports skills program at school, with paid and non-paid sport options. Debating

Masters Academy has a network of over 50 trained coaches who facilitate debating workshops in schools.

These workshops will commence in Term 2 at Manly West PS. Masters Academy will be running one hour long debating workshops from 3.35 – 4.35pm on Monday and Wednesdays in 3L and 4B classrooms. Each workshop group will be staffed by two highly experienced debating coaches from Masters Academy who will provide ongoing support for students whilst they learn debating throughout the term, teaching them structures and using a wide variety of enjoyable activities to develop their speaking skills. More information about bookings and costs can be found on the Masters Academy Debating Workshops information sheet in the newsletter. Or go to the Masters Academy website for more information about Masters

Academy – http://www.mastersacademytraining.com.au/about-us.html

Harmony Day Tips for wearing a touch of orange are available in the note on page 6 from

our Multicultural Officers, Lucy Matthews and Winona Wrigley.

Thank you Families of Manly West

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we received ‘free’mathematical and gardening equipment as a result of the Woolworths Earn and Learn Reward Program. I have since discovered that we were one of the highest achieving schools in the nation! This was made possible by the Yardley family, volunteering to count the thousands of tickets Manly West families collected.

Your combined efforts are being appreciated in both indoor and outdoor classrooms by students and teachers.

School Development Day This Saturday, 2nd April, our teachers will be at school for a School Development Day. We will be involved in professional learning on the Numeracy Continuum, Visible Learning and Technology as a Tool for Learning – iPads and Google Apps.

Thank you Special thanks to a team of parents who gave their time this week to bind a large number of individual student Numeracy folders. These are being used to complement the work we are doing on Saturday regarding the Numeracy Continuum. Thank you to Christine Cammack (mother to Isabella in 2M and Ben in KY), Tracey Martin (mother to Sarah in 2M) and Valerie McDonald (mother to Jodie in 2DG and Kirsty in KY).

Useful Website for Parents As children grow and change, we as parents learn on the job how to be the best parent we can be. If you are

interested in a useful parenting resource, you may like to access the Resourcing Parents link - http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au

‘Resourcing Parents provides parenting education information to parents and carers of children aged 0-18 years. The calendar of Parenting Education programs is current and the site is funded by the NSW government to support families.’

CENTRE NEWS – Just a few of our activities!

make animal masks and be involved in a nature scavenger hunt.

This week 3/4 Club will be pitting their skills against the staff in Wii challenges! Crazy cubby

houses, Hama Beads and origami are just some of the other activities on the program.

Club 5/6 will be introduced to a life-sized naughts and crosses game and they will also make paper

planes to aim at their handmade target! They have also been enjoying playing card games, like ‘Speed’,

and will be able to play ‘Spoons’ this week. After a child request, learning basketball skills and putting it

Library News

Spectacular reading by Sophie Darton (6C) who has completed the 2016 NSW

Premier’s Reading Challenge! All students who complete the PRC independently by

the due date will receive a bookmark, an Aspire card, their names in the

newsletter and a certificate signed by the Premier at the end of the year. All

reading logs must be completed, printed and handed in no later than Friday,

AUGUST 19th, 2016. If you have any questions, please check the PRC website

(https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/) with all the rules and tips for completing this year’s reading challenge.

Thank you to the entire King family who have coordinated the book club orders

and will deliver them to your classroom or to the office (if they are gifts) by the

end of this week! The commission from this order has earned the school library

heaps of books for all ages.

Are there any parents out there who love to reupholster furniture and would like

to help the students in the library read comfortably on stylish seating? If so,

can you please get in touch with me by calling the school or emailing me at

[email protected]? It would be nice to update the library chairs and

benches but be more sustainable by reupholstering instead of purchasing brand

new furniture.

Happy reading! Ellen Swick Teacher Librarian

ribbons or wrist bands. Please note it is not a mufti day, so please wear

your school uniform. Please note, that no face paint is allowed to be

worn.

We look forward to seeing all your orange ideas on Thursday.
