December 2018 RESIDENTS OF THE MONTH Don and Carolyn Workman Don and I first met as I was leaving Catalina Island with some girlfriends and he was arriving with some of his friends. We met again, months later, at the local drive-in. He attended Hamilton High, my high school’s nemesis, and come to find out our friend Lorna Kopel also attended the same high school. Don had a friend from my school who set us up on a date. We didn’t meet again until we ran into each other at Douglas aircraft where we both worked. Shortly thereafter, Don left Douglas for a better job at Rohr aircraft in San Diego. We started dating long distance - mostly weekends. Don worked the swing shift and he would drive to Mar Vista after work and arrive just as I was leaving for work. After six months he asked me to marry him in a roundabout way by leaving an engagement ring in his glove compartment and sending me out to get it. We were at a crossroad in our relationship because I had been offered a job by Douglas in TX. If I accepted the offer, I would be gone a long time. We were married in beautiful Santa Monica on a lovely August morning. I had “OBEY” removed from our vows. I was so nervous I said, “With this wing,” instead of “With this ring.” My supervisors arranged for us to spend two days in Las Vegas, so after the reception we changed clothes and flew off on our honeymoon. We flew back Monday morning, picked up our car and drove to Chula Vista, as Don had to be at work on Monday evening. For a short time we lived in an apartment above a farm house. The farm raised thoroughbred horses, and every night before dark I would feed them carrots, apples and sugar cubes while I waited for Don to come home. We moved very little in our married life. We first bought a house in Manhattan Beach in the village area. In 4 1/2 years we outgrew that house and bought another Manhattan Beach Home. A decade later we bought a home in Fountain Valley near Huntington Beach. Our children graduated from high school and college. My brother had moved to Folsom some years earlier. We visited him and his family once a year and fell in love with the area. We decided to build a home we designed on five acres in the hills off Mother Lode. We lived there until we moved to Ponte Palmero, but we waited a year to sell our home. The first people to look at the house bought it. I’m so glad we sold it and moved to Ponte when we did. This is home without the worry. DZ-241 - Ponte Palmero - Issue: 12/01/18 Viewed: 11/30/18 11:01 AM

RUBY is a delightful little DeerChihuahua belonging to Ann Kellerand Ed Draper, new residents hereat Ponte.

Ruby was rescued from the animalshelter when she was 2yrs. old. Shehas lived with Ann and Ed for 8 yearsand has become their specialcompanion. This little doggie has abig tale to tell as she was onceattacked by an owl. The owl pickedRuby up by her head with its talonsand began to carry her off in to thewild for its dinner. Well it was agood thing Ruby had eaten many ofher dinners and was a little over-weight because the owl couldn’t holdher and dropped her on the roadwhere she was sideswiped by a car.Luckily she was not hurt by the carbut she had some serious cuts on her

head from the claws of the owl. Rubyknew her way home and Ann fixed herup and has been a happy little camperever since.

Although Ruby is a happy little dogmost of the time, Ann believes shemay have been abused before theyrescued her because she tends to bescared of the mail when Ann holds itin her hands and she is scared ofbrooms also.

Ruby is a great watch dog andenjoys getting to know all the newpeople here at Ponte.
