The Devon School of English and Queen’s College share the same ideas about education. A school should be a place where everyone

counts; should have a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with a real sense of purpose

and, above all, should have a passion for learning. This vision of how a school

should be underpins The Devon School’s exciting residential study centre at

Queen’s College. Set in a quiet, exclusive and leafy neighbourhood, it is the ideal

location for a residential summer school. Not only is the school in the heart of

some of the most beautiful countryside in the West Country but also only

minutes away from the lively and attractive town centre of Taunton, the county

town of Somerset. What’s more, it is only two hours away from London.

The Devon School of English has over 40 years’ experience in organising

teenager study holidays in Paignton on the famous English Riviera. Queen’s

College is a quintessentially English Public School founded in 1843 and steeped

in tradition and history. It is a story-book setting that never fails to captivate the

imagination of its students.

The campus has spacious,

fully-equipped classrooms,

light and airy bedroom

accommodation and superb

recreational facilities. The

beautiful surroundings,

carefully-selected staff and

engaging programme of

activities and lessons all

contribute to an

unforgettable English

experience.

The Translation of Queen’s College’s Latin motto is “We learn not for school but

for life”. It sums up our approach to educating young people, an approach which is

reflected in the environment that Queen’s has created.

The leisure facilities at the college are outstanding. There is a modern theatre and

cinema that is used for film nights, talent shows and drama; a performing arts space for

school events, music and dance; a music room; a large indoor sports hall for basketball,

badminton, 5-a-side football, netball and other sports; an indoor swimming pool; and

extensive outdoor sports fields, pitches and courts for cricket, athletics, football, hockey

and tennis. Student common rooms are comfortable places to relax with TVs and DVD

players and some with pool tables and games.

Queen’s College is only a ten-minute walk from the bustling market town of Taunton in

the south-west of England. The town’s many shops provide everything from the latest

high-street fashions and technology to traditional English antiques, bric-a-brac and

souvenirs. Taunton is the ideal location to visit the very best of the West Country: for

destinations such as Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Exmoor, Torbay and the North Devon coast.

Th e Academic Programme

The Academic programme consists of 3 hours of lessons every morning from 9 till

10.30 and then from 11.00 to 12.30. Learning English with us is fun! We adopt a

topic-based syllabus with a communicative focus: the first lesson concentrates on

language development, the second is a skills-focussed project class.

Our teachers are all dynamic, enthusiastic, qualified professionals selected for their

ability to make learning as effective and as enjoyable as possible. This means the

best materials, the most stimulating teaching programmes and real-life projects.

Projects are often linked to the afternoon activities helping to bridge the gap

between the classroom and the world outside. Add to this a good mix of nationalities

which gives students the chance to meet and make friends with young people

from all over the world and you have the perfect combination for the ideal

learning experience.

Students are placed in classes according to their results in our entrance test and their

performance is carefully evaluated by our teachers in collaboration with the Director

of Studies during their initial lessons and throughout their stay – this ensures that

each student is always working at the correct level for their ability.

Each student receives a Welcome Pack full of key information and study advice and a

Devon School pen. At the end of the course, students receive a Course Certificate

and a detailed report on their progress and advice for future study.

We run a full activity programme with at least one half-day trip and one

full-day trip per week. Destinations for these

excursions have included seaside trips to

Torbay, Minehead and Weston-super-Mare;

trips to shopping and historical and cultural

destinations such as Bath, Exeter, Oxford

and Bristol. Other trips sample the beautiful

countryside around Taunton such as

Exmoor and the caves of Cheddar. At an

extra cost and on request, we can also

organise trips to London for groups.

The excellent sports facilities at the college

mean that we can offer football, tennis,

swimming, water polo, cricket and rounders

as well as the ever-popular mini-Olympics!

There is a wide range of non-sporting

activities too. These have included song

writing, film making, theatre and drama,

dance classes (hip-hop to samba), jewellery

making, fashion design, drawing & painting,

magazine writing, and science challenges.

Highlights of the evening social events are

the Murder Mystery, The Queen’s College

Talent Show, the Traditional Village Fête and

the Casino Night, not forgetting the popular

Friday disco with a professional DJ, sound

system and light show.

Queen’s College accommodation houses have well-appointed dormitories with between 2

and 6 beds. Single rooms are also available. Each student has wardrobe and drawer space and

a lockable cupboard. Students are advised to leave expensive items in the school safe.

Towels and bed linen are provided and are changed weekly.

There is free wi-fi access in each residential house. Every student is given a 24-hour emergency

number which they or their parents can call. We advise students to telephone their parents once

they have arrived at the college to assure them that they have arrived safely and well.

The three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are taken in the large, light and airy dining

hall. There is a choice of meals every day plus a vegetarian option and we also cater for other

dietry requirements, for example no pork, gluten free and lactose free. Food is freshly prepared in

the school kitchen. Packed meals are provided for excursions and transfers. Menus offer a varied,

balanced, healthy and tasty diet, with produce supplied from local farmers and butchers.

There is also a Tuck Shop, offering the students a variety of snacks, sweets and soft drinks.

Accommodation and board Supervision and security are certainly the major concerns of parents

sending their children to England, maybe for the first time, and we, at The

Devon School, give these matters our top priority. We make sure that parents

can feel confident about sending their child to study with us. All of our

activities are closely supervised by our managers, teachers and activity

leaders. Students must take part in the full activity programme and are not

permitted to go off on their own. House parents monitor and provide

pastoral care for students when they are in their residential houses, providing

support and dealing with any problems that may arise. Students are never

left unsupervised in their residential houses. Managers oversee the

supervision of unaccompanied students (students who have not come with

a group) during excursions and break times in school.

Staff are always on hand to deal with any individual problems or requests.

Our Anti-Bullying Code (ABC) means that everyone can be sure that they

will enjoy their time at Queen’s free from intimidation.

On the first day of school, students are given a personal school identity card

with an emergency telephone number which can be contacted 24 hours a

day. Before their arrival, students receive a Welcome Pack, explaining exactly

what to expect during their stay.

The Devon School has three managers on site: the Centre Manager, who

oversees all aspects of the residential programme; the Director of Studies, who

oversees the academic programme; and the Activities Manager, who is

responsible for the programme of activities and excursions. Together, they deal

with all aspects of organisation, planning, supervision, security and pastoral care

on and off the campus.

The three managers are supported by our House Parents, teachers and activity

leaders. The managers constantly liaise with the foreign group leaders and

Queen’s College staff to make sure that everything runs smoothly and any

problems that might arise are addressed immediately and effectively. They are

also responsible for the welfare and pastoral care of our individual students and

act in the place of group leaders.
