Graduation night was also a time to recognize the many great teachers who have inspired our residents to achieve so much. The residents named Dr. Ben Maring MD (photo on right) as the Lester Hollander Outpatient Teacher of the Year. After completing residency at Kaiser Oakland and obtaining his MPH degree from UC Berkeley, Dr. Maring joined the Primary Care faculty

where he has shined as a clinician, mentor, and teacher. A former sous chef at Thomas Keller’s Per Se, Ben has used his culinary expertise to teach many Kaiser residents and patients techniques for creating healthy meals. Inpatient teaching honors were bestowed upon Dr. Peter Le, MD (left) from the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Lee was a former Chief Resident and fellow at UC Irvine prior to joining Kaiser East Bay. He has been recognized for his teaching for several years before winning the Inpatient Teacher of the Year this year. He is a favorite of residents, not only for his mastery of on-the-fly teaching but also for the respect and he has

for residents. Dr, Le never forgets what it was like to be a resident and goes out of his way to involve them in every aspect of patient care, from goals of care discussions to bronchoscopies. In thinking about the countless faculty members who spend time teaching and mentoring residents, two awards never seem like enough. Our hats go off to our additional Distinguished Teachers as voted on by the residents (below).

Community, Diversity, & Inclusion Kaiser Oakland is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion. Why Kaiser Oakland? Many reasons: first, we serve an incredibly diverse population whether defined by socioeconomic status, social determinants of health, race, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Secondly, it is in our DNA: Kaiser Oakland was among the first medical centers to offer dedicated clinics in HIV care in the 1980s and in the care of LGBTQ individuals. Third, we have shown that we can eliminate discrepan-cies in healthcare outcomes and provide the same quality of care to all individuals. Led by Dr. Nailah Thompson, the residen-cy’s efforts in this area span the spectrum of education, from high school to post-residency. Read on! In the top photo, Dr. Thompson is joined by several residents and faculty for the Helix mentoring event, part of the MIMS (Mentoring in Medicine and Science) pro-gram between Kaiser and local schools. The second photo includes the recent gradu-ates of the 2019 IIHC (Immersion in Inte-grated Health Care) program founded by Kaiser Oakland’s Dr. Juan Guerra. The IIHC provides scholarships to rising second-year medical students from diverse backgrounds across the country to spend a month at Kaiser. The third photo captures a unique affiliation with neighboring medical school, UC Davis. The students in UC Davis’ ACE-PC track rotate at Kaiser as part of their ambulatory medicine experience. This track is designed for students from underserved areas who are planning careers in primary care. The Kaiser Oakland Internal Medicine Resi-dency Program launched its Health Equity and Disparities track in 2017-2018 for resi-dents who want to be part of our mission. Directed by Dr. Nailah Thompson, this track is part of our larger goal to increase the diversity of our physician workforce to match the incredible diversity of pa-tients we see. Post-residency, Kaiser Oakland launched the Community Health Fellowship in July 2018 and graduat-ed its first fellow in July 2019— our own former resident Dr. Shefali Nath, MD (photo on right)!

Original Research Under the guidance of Assistant Program Director Dr. Joan Lo, a Harvard med school grad, UCSF-trained Endocrinologist, and faculty researcher at Kaiser Oakland’s Division of Research, resident research continues to soar. In the academic year 2018-19, residents authored manuscripts in 14 peer-reviewed publications and presented 37 posters at numerous regional and national meetings (ACP, American Heart Association, American Geriatric Society, American Women’s Association, Student National Minorities Association, American Thoracic Society, and Innovations in Medical Education) for their original work in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dallas, Portland, Chicago, Washington D.C., and LA. Below is a sampling from the past year.

Wellness & Well-Being Spearheaded by Asst. Program Director Dr. Gangopadhyay, the IM Residency ushered in a new era of Wellness & Well-Being. Wellness Champ Dr G’s first order of business was creating a resident-led Wellness Committee to help lead stretch breaks and walks around the lake. Ask about any of the numerous other ways we support resident wellness:

Wellness Passport, Wellness half-days, annual retreats, confidential mental health visits, resiliency discussion groups, healthy food options, balanced schedules (weekend day off on wards, no overnight call), stipend for gym memberships, pot lucks, co-ed soccer team, 5K races, indoor rock climbing… you get the picture.
