DEDICATION

We dedicate this paper to the enhancement of Mechanical Engineering Students

for their future studies.

We would also like to dedicate this research paper to all our past instructors who

taught us well to be better people, so that one day when we become engineers we will be

able to apply every mathematical and life lesson they all taught us.

To our parents who never failed to support and guide us.

To our fellow students who helped us in finishing this, they’ve contributed a lot

just to finish this paper. We couldn’t have done it without them.

We also dedicate this to our instructor, Dr. Sherrilyn B. Quintos. She was the one

who taught us the discipline and the proper way of writing a paper like this. It was hard at

some point but she made it easier for us to finish this paper on time.

Last but not the least, to God who never failed to guide us while doing our every

task in finishing this paper. He was the one who guided and protected us through our

journeys. He is the real master of knowledge. Without him, it would be impossible to

finish this paper.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Mechanical Engineering is a program that specializes in machine designs. It applies

the principles of engineering for design, manufacturing and analysis of mechanical

systems. It specializes more on machinery works, on how machines will work.

According to Wikipedia.com, Mechanical Engineering emerged as a field during

the 18th century; however its development is traceable thousands of years ago. It emerged

in the 19

th

century as a result of successful development in the field of physics.

Career is defined as an individual’s journey through learning, work and other aspects of

life.

Bataan is a province that was recognized by the world because of its quality

graduates in the field of Engineering. Two schools in the mentioned province offers the

program BSME, namely Bataan Heroes Memorial College and Bataan Peninsula State

University. Both of the mentioned schools are acknowledged for its BSME graduates.

This program was said to be “in demand” because a lot of refineries and companies

are establishing their plants, and these plants need heavy machineries that will be designed

 by Mechanical Engineers.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of the study is: What are the career opportunities for BSME

Graduates in Bataan?

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 6/46

1. How may the following factors affect the career opportunities in Bataan be described in

terms of :

1.1 lack of companies;

1.2 lack of ways in finding a job and

1.3 lack of qualifications?

2. What are companies suitable for BSME Graduates and RMEs in terms of:

2.1 schools;

2.2. companies/engineering firms and

2.3. refineries?

3. What are the qualifications in finding a job in terms of:

3.1 being a board passer;

3.2 being a non-board passer and

3.3 experience in the engineering field?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

With the help of numerous consultations, research and observation the research

only applies to a few individuals. In this research, the researchers will distribute

questionnaires in order to gather information to fulfill the gaps of doubt. The study,

dissemination and tabling of data are good ways of informing people. The following

information and data mentioned in this research are solemnly the truth for the researchers

carefully studied each and every one of them.

This research will be conducted inside the province of Bataan thus eliminating a

few people that are considered as not favorable as subjects.

2

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 7/46

Included in this research are all BSME graduates that work inside the province.

Professors, Engineers and BSME Graduates are considered the main subjects of this

research.

Not included in this research are BSME graduates who work outside the province

of Bataan. The main concern of this research are only BSME graduates and Engineers who

work within Bataan. The opinion and answers of these people will define and give edge to

this research.

Significance of the Study

This study is deemed significant to the following group of people for the following

reasons:

Public. The significance of this study is that it will inform the people about the

engineering field and about the career opportunities in it. The Engineering Field has a lot

of things to offer professionals, from education to designing machineries.

Students. This research will serve as a good basis for students who will conduct

their research. The researchers promise the authenticity of all the data written and

mentioned in this research. The researcher would like to explore the engineering field more

thus they led to this research. In this research, the public would be inform how good the

engineering education in the Province of Bataan is. Every opinion and answer matters,

future researchers who will work on their research connected the engineering field would

likely benefit of this research.

Government. The chosen subjects would likely benefit because they will have the

freedom to express their thoughts, opinions and comments regarding opportunities for

BSME graduates and RMEs inside the Province of Bataan. This move might give the

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents the relevant theory, related literature and studies which are

reviewed to attain a clearer perspective and direction in the conduct of the study. It also

includes the conceptual framework as well as the definition of terms used in the study. This

chapter deals with research design, the population, sampling, instruments and procedures

that will be used for collection of data.

Relevant Theories

Focusing on Career Opportunities for BSME Graduates a few theories will be used.

Felta.Ph (2010), “the Filipino students should work with series of cross-curricular,

theme based activities and develop skills within science, technology, engineering,

mathematics as well as language.”  Felta states that students should focus more on the

mentioned fields especially in the engineering field. Why? Engineering gives a big change

to a certain place. Not only in certain provinces but also in the country. The students of

engineering will give a place a certain amount of hope for it gives a lot of people more

knowledge in technology and research.

Sam Williams (2014), “the job of a mechanical engineer is to design and conduct

studies and design mechanical instruments and machineries.” Sam Williams states that the

work of Mechanical Engineers is to design instruments and machineries, with the help of

their designs, heavy jobs will be a lot easier because of the machines that they will design

in order to make the lives of people better and easier.

Katehi et al., (2009), “Engineering design involves the following essential

components: identifying the problem; specifying requirements of the solution; sketching

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 11/46

and visualizing the solution; modeling and analyzing the solution; evaluating alternative

solutions, as necessary; and optimizing the final decision.” The author of the quote states

that only people in the engineering field are the ones able to make things work much easily

compared to people with no knowledge and experience in the engineering field.

howtobecomeamechanicalengineer.com (2015), “long before the electronic

engineers, computer engineers and the spacecraft engineers, the mechanical engineers are

already at our disposal. In other words, we can say that they almost pioneered everything

that we see in our advance societies today. Don’t forget that our industries began by only

using simple mechanical equipment as our mechanical engineers are already doing their

jobs then. At the dawn of automation comes the electronic engineers and the mechanical

engineers are there to work side by side with them to produce our Automated Teller

Machines, Vending Machines to programmable dishwashers.”

According to the quote, long before new types of engineers sprung, mechanical

engineers already succeeded in various types of the engineering fields. Inventions and

simple machineries by RMEs helped people to make heavy jobs a lot easier.

According to the same website, “now that we are already into space exploration

and we need remote controlled vehicles to gather samples from the moon and other planet

like Mars, the mechanical engineers are getting their roles among the team creators of these

machines. However, these mechanical engineers that get involved with more in-depth

scientific research usually also have backgrounds either in robotics, electronics,

mechatronics, fluid dynamics and other engineering specializations that engineers always

have the options to take.”

7

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 12/46

As explained by the previous paragraphs, it only states that mechanical engineers

indeed succeeded in almost every aspect of the engineering field, on the contrary not only

on simple machine designs and planning but also in works when in comes to space. These

engineers have contributed so much to the research and exploration of the galaxy humans

lived in.

Related Literature

Age. It refers to the individual's development measured in terms of the years

requisite for like development of an average individual.

Gender. It refers to the grammatical categories of being masculine, feminine or

neutral; in the development context “gender” needs to be understood in a particular way as

defined by career. There is this certain discrimination when it comes to finding a job

especially in the engineering field.

Educational Qualification. Educational qualifications are the degrees, diplomas,

certificates, professional titles and so forth that an individual has acquired whether by full-

time study, part-time study or private study, whether conferred in the home country or

abroad, and whether conferred by educational authorities, special examining bodies or

professional bodies. According to QAA (2008) colleges placed considerable emphasis on

developing the study skills of students to ‘help them with the transition to higher -level.

Courses prepared students well for future employment and close links with employers are

seen as ‘key to helping students obtain subject-related employment’. Colleges made an

important contribution to widening participation in higher education ‘which has

increasingly featured as a strength of college provision.

Company. The location of the company matters the most especially for people with

low paying job or those people considered on the lowest bracket of the income table.

Related Studies

In the study of Saygo et al. (2005), the aim was to find out the level of difficulty

encountered by college science students in conducting investigatory project in terms of

research skills, economic resources, time management and human resources.

Descriptive method of research was used wherein a validated questionnaire was

distributed to the respondents to gather pertinent data and information needed in the study.

The data gathered were treated using frequency counts, percentages and average weighted

mean.

The result of the study showed that the students encountered moderate difficulty in

terms of research skills, economic resources and time management and difficulty in terms

of human resources.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 presents the paradigm of the study. This study has set its parameters

through the use of independent variable-dependent variable model.

The first frame presents the independent variables namely the profile of the

respondents such as, gender, educational qualification, board results and annual income of

the respondent.

The second frames presents the dependent variable which covers career

opportunities for BSME Graduates in the province of Bataan.

CHAPTER III

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter includes the method and procedure used in gathering the data. The

subject of the study, the instrument adapted, and statistical treatment employed in

interpreting the data.

Method and Technique of the Study

The researcher will use the descriptive method of research particularly the

questionnaire which will be used to determine the profile of the respondents and leadership

behavior as to financial management, service and safety. The researcher used the

 precaution frequency and percentage formula.

Descriptive research or statistical research provides data about career opportunities

for BSME Graduates in Bataan. But it can only describe the ‘’who, what, when, where and

how’’ of the situation, not what is caused it. Therefore, descriptive research is used when

the objective is to provide a systematic description that is as factual and accurate as

possible. It provides the number of times something occurs, or frequency, lends itself to

statistical calculation such as determining the average number of occurrences or central

tendencies.

One of its major limitations is that it cannot help determine what causes a specific

behavior, motivation or occurrence. In other words, it cannot establish a causal research

relationship between variables.

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 17/46

Population and Sample of the Study

Universal Sampling Technique will be utilized to complete the needed population

of the study. Table 1 shows the distribution of the respondents as much as many BSME

Graduates in the province , only 30 of them will be exclusively taken as population of the

study. Although they will be 12 towns, five towns will only be selected.

The respondents of the study will be the. Unfortunately, the population of BSME

Graduates in Bataan doesn’t have a certain number. The researchers will try to find atleast

100 BSME Graduates in order to perform the research.

Research Instrument

To gather most of the information needed in this study, the main instrument will be

a questionnaire. The questionnaire will consist of two parts:

Part I contains the personal information sheet of the respondents. It includes lack

companies, ways in finding a job and qualifications. Parts II presents the questions about

the career opportunities for BSME Graduates in the province of Bataan.

13

7/17/2019 RESEARCH.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/researchpdf-568dd0af07fd5 18/46

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will distribute the questionnaire to 30 respondents who will be

selected according to their availability during the data gathering. There will be no special

criterion as long as they and willing to answer the questionnaire in honest way to obtain

essential data.

This will be done during their break time. The researchers will first explain the

content of the questionnaire and will encourage the respondents to ask questions. They will

be given enough time to answer the survey questionnaire. The assigned researcher will

collect the questionnaire for analysis and interpretation.

Content Validity

The questionnaire will consist of two parts: Part I: Profile of the respondents which

include the age, gender, educational qualification, business location and annual income

while Part II deals more on career opportunities for BSME Graduates in Bataan. It will be

reviewed, checked and analyzed before the final draft will be distributed among the

respondents.

Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

The data that will be gathered from the questionnaire will be tallied, scored,

analyzed and presented in tabular form. The frequency and percentage will be used to

best describe the demographic profile of the respondents.

Specific problems stated on Chapter 1 will be analyzed and interpreted using

statistical tools. They will be the following.
