I am happy to share with you the first independent report on Research and Publications at IIM Indore.

Over recent years, IIM Indore has grown in strength and today has 85 highly qualified faculty. We also have a vibrant doctoral programme. Our internal performance management system is placing greater emphasis on research. The mission of IIM Indore is to be a business school with world class academic students and that would obviously include excellence in research and publications.

The Institute has taken a number of steps to promote research activities. New schemes have been introduced in 2014 to provide seed money for new projects, grants for collaboration, support for research skill enhancement and recognition of outstanding research contributions.

Five new Special Interest Groups have been formed to facilitate integrative research. The Institute actively looks for opportunities to organise high quality conference and workshops.

This report is a modest attempt to track and share with key stakeholders our research output. We are confident that our research agenda will be enhanced in the years to come and will have significant impact.

Distinctive Features of IIMI

Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP)

IIM Indore’s educational approach ensures that its graduates are well-rounded, collaborative and competent leaders who have a strong grounding in functional expertise and industry expertise, a global mind-set, and sensitivity to societal issues. This is accomplished through a well-structured curriculum.

Unique rural immersion programme to give graduates contextual connect: To enable the participants to understand the social context in which organizations work and exist, an exposure to the rural settings of Madhya Pradesh is included in the course design.

Experiential learning- Students visit a company once a week in the first year of the Programme. They are required to carry out a study on various industries and key players in the industry. This enhances their exposure to organizations and provides them a backdrop for analysing the managerial contexts of different cases.

A unique matrix based structure for PGP-II wherein participants take 10% credits in ‘Industry vertical courses’ and 10% credits in ‘Functional area courses’ in addition to the general management credits.

Himalaya outbound programme for PGP-II students: While participants are adequately prepared for a corporate career, their ability to motivate themselves to perform in an unfamiliar ambience and work as a team is enhanced by encouraging them to undergo an outbound exercise and simulation conducted in serene locations at various altitudes in the Himalayas.

While students get to pursue electives of their choice, they are also given an opportunity to register for workshops to get focused knowledge on the skills and practices applicable to specific functional domains.

IIM Indore students participate in a wide range of extra and co-curricular activities which include IRIS (The Annual Management & Cultural Festival) and Utsaha (Rural Marketing Fair).

Strong Student Exchange Programme: IIM Indore has exchange tie-ups with several prestigious international business schools. A large number of students visit these business schools and complete one semester there.

PGP at IIM Indore admits around 450 students every year.

IIM Indore provides a broad array of programmes, formats and locations (Indore and Mumbai) to meet the diverse needs for management education. IIM Indore offers participant-centered approach to management education. Support for Seed Money Projects

This initiative provides support to members of the faculty to develop research ideas, complete literature reviews, test questionnaires and other preliminary research activities leading to full-fledged research projects. In the case of research based on secondary data, this covers the entire research project. Case-writing projects and course development projects are also considered as Seed Money Projects.

Under the scheme, a maximum amount of Rs. 1 Lakh is provided to interested faculty for a project that needs to be completed within one year of the date of approval.

During the year 2014-15, the Research & Publications Committee (RPC), consisting of Professor D.L. Sunder (Chair), Professor Rajendra Nargundkar and Professor Ranjeet Nambudiri, recommended support under the scheme for 14 projects as follows:

This scheme aims to support collaboration between faculty members at IIM Indore and researchers from outside India. This is a competitive grant. Applications are invited once a year. A maximum of 3 such grants are provided every year. It is expected that the research collaboration would result in publication in a leading academic journal. The budget allotted under the project is Rs. 4 Lakh and the grant duration is maximum eight weeks.

Abstract: For large economies with substantial regional variation, it is of great importance for policymakers and economic analysts that macro-economic statistics are broken down by region. This paper reviews the regional accounts in India, discusses their role in Indian federal and state policies, and provides new estimates to cover major data gaps. Statistics on domestic product by Indian state, broken down by industry, are regularly published. But despite demands and recommendations by various commissions and policymakers, a comprehensive system of regional accounts is yet to be developed. New estimates for the period 1993–2010 are presented for saving and the macro-economic expenditure by Indian states, like final consumption, capital formation, and trade balance. They show, for example, that some of the fastest growing Indian states have increased their saving and investment rates to 50 percent of their domestic product.

Rai, R and Selvaraj, P. (2015).Exploring Realities of Food Security: Oral Accounts of Migrant

Workers in Urban India. Economic & Industrial Democracy, 36(1), 147-171

Abstract: Traditional approaches of food security largely draw from neoliberal prescriptions, which focus on supply side issues of improving productivity and efficiency through market mechanisms. Reflections on the oral accounts of 30 migrants from eastern India to the capital city of the state Gujarat, India, provide two important insights regarding food security related issues. First, in terms of the lived realities of these migrants, traditional approaches of food security are inadequate to address their concerns as these exacerbate their food related vulnerabilities. Second, economic democracy and food sovereignty approaches are more helpful in addressing food related vulnerabilities as these approaches engage more comprehensively with the multidimensional socioeconomic vulnerabilities of the migrants from the perspective of equity and justice.

Abstract: The study investigates the relationship between prior job experience and current academic performance among management students in India. It further explores the impact of individual and situational factors on the above relationship. Based on a longitudinal study spanning over nine months in academic year 2010–11 among a sample of 324 management students, the study found a positive relationship between prior job experience and current academic performance. Among individual factors, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeableness, and among situational factors, perceived organizational support, were expected to moderate the relationship. Apart from openness to experience and agreeableness, the other variables were found to strengthen the relationship between prior job experience and current academic performance. The study argues that in addition to prior job experience, individual and situational factors are important for current academic performance in management education. Implications of the study for theory and practice are discussed.

Mishra, S. K. (2014). Linking Perceived Organizational Support

to Emotional Labor. Personnel Review, 43(6), 845-860.

Abstract: Employees who interact with customers are the most visible representatives of the organization. The expansion of service economy coupled with increased competition has increased the focus on the way the frontline-employees express their emotions during customer interactions. In fact, employees’ expression of sincere emotions during customer interactions has been argued as the central part of their everyday work life. Past studies have shown that frontline-employees’ sincere emotional expression influences customers’ satisfaction. Given the above findings, the challenge before the organizations is how to influence employees to express sincere emotions during customer interaction.Based on two studies (one among the medical representatives and second among the frontline-employees in hospitality industry) the study demonstrates that to be effective in influencing employees’ expression of sincere emotions, managers need to focus on the mechanisms to strengthen their identification with the organization. Further, the present research provides support for the assertion that employees’ perception of organizational support is a powerful mechanism to foster their identification with the organization.

Perception and Brand Equity. Academy of Marketing Science Review, 1-17.DOI: 10.1007/s13162-

015-0063-y.

Abstract: This conceptual work investigates the relationship between user-perceived product design and consumer-based brand equity. By integrating three independent and diverse theoretical perspectives namely, design value framework, means–end chains and brand equity theory, a detailed literature review is presented that relates consumer design perception to brand equity, mediated by consumption value. Design perception as a multi-dimensional entity constituted of visual, functional, kinesthetic, interface, and information design perceptions is also proposed. Consumption experience, manifested as experiential value, is conceptualized as a higher-order construct, with usability, social value and pleasure in use forming the lower-order factors. Brand equity is also operationalized with five underlying components—brand association, perceived quality, perceived value, brand trust and brand loyalty. Moderating effects of consumer characteristics on the relationship between design perception and the consumption value are also explored. By proposing a framework in line with the modern philosophy of design thinking, this work provides guidelines for practising designers to work in conjunction with marketers, so as to create design elements that meet and shape consumers’ design needs, resulting in a positive consumer–brand relationship.

Service Sector: Windows of Opportunity, Path-creating, and Moving up the Value Chain.

Development Policy Review, 32(4), 495-518.

Abstract: Indian IT service firms are successfully competing with world leaders. At the same time, research on the industry is also evolving. Providing analysis at the firm rather than industry level, this article identifies the windows of opportunity open to Indian firms, with the following findings: (i) The catching-up process by Indian IT firms can be classified as a three-stage ‘body shopping–off shoring–global delivery model’, comparable with the three steps in original equipment, own-design and own-brand manufacturing; (ii) The window of opportunity for Indian firms was primarily the techno-economic paradigm shift, and secondarily the government's regulation and support of the industry; and (iii) Indian firms initially partially re-invented their own path by off shoring, and created their own global delivery model, gradually moving to higher value-added services.

Research and Publications Report 2014-15 28 Research and Publications Report 2014-15 29

As part of a World Bank project, IIM Indore has selected six colleges of the state to study autonomy in higher educational institutes of Madhya Pradesh. This pilot project in the country is aimed to suggest measures for educational reforms, which may later be a part of national policy for higher education. Three professors from IIM Indore are working on the project namely, Professor Prashant Salwan, Lead Consultant; Professor D.L. Sunder, Consultant; Professor Prabin Panigrahi, Consultant. The budget allotted for this study is Rs. 15 Lakh. Using a case study approach, these six institutions in Madhya Pradesh were studied to understand:

(1) How different institutional stakeholders perceive autonomy or the lack of it

(2) The differences in the practice of autonomy at these institutions and

(3) How (if) these differences in practice contribute to the success (improved quality) of the institution.

Based on the study, it is recommended that steps be taken to increase autonomy at the institutional level in all three areas viz., academic, administrative and financial.

To facilitate a smooth transition from a ‘command and control’ model to a ‘steer and evaluate’ model, the changes may be introduced in a phased manner. The three phases based on time lines would be immediate

(within 1 year), medium term (in 1-3 years) and by long term (3-5 years).

a. Increase autonomy

b. Introduction of planned faculty development programmes.

a. Improve Infrastructure,

b. Increased autonomy to confirm to the recommendations of UGC guidelines,

c. Introduction /implementation of changes in governance structures reducing the role of government in the governance of the autonomous institutions,
