Johan EklundManaging Director, Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and Professor Blekinge Institute of Technology
Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum has been active in the field of generating and trans-ferring policy relevant research in the field of entrepreneurship, innovation and SMEs for 25 years 2019. Today we are the leading network organization in this field in Sweden.
Every year we publish around 20 research based reports and organize approximately30 seminars and conferences. To contribu-te with knowledge and enrich the debate Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum has gathe-red networks of key policy actors, business leaders and decision makers. This serves to fulfil the organization’s ambition to be a motor of change and affect policy to create
good conditions for individuals to gene-rate ideas and embark on new businesses ventures.
Despite a broad consensus on the entrepre-neur as a key to economic developmentand creation of new and growing busines-ses, the need for continuous attention to the issue cannot be stressed enough. Sweden is in need of further reforms to strengthen the conditions for entrepreneurs in an increasingly tough global competition. By elevating the public debate with high quality research we believe better conditions for dynamic, growth-friendly economic policies are created.

Annual HighlightsSwedish Entrepreneurship Forum annually organizes a number of flagship events: Swedish Entrepreneurship Sum-mit, Swedish Philanthropy Summit, the Prize Ceremony of Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, Swedish Schumpeter Lecture and Swedish Economic Forum. In addition, activities are arranged within Swedish Entrepre-neurship Forum’s various forums.
Swedish Entrepreneurship Summit is our annual conference that gathers a large number of stakeholders interested in strengthening and promoting entre-preneurship and favorable conditions for Swedish enterprise. In 2018 the conference was arranged in collaboration with Örebro University and attracted around 150 parti-cipants. Labor market issues and the supp-ly of skills – connected to entrepreneurship and possibilities to scale up – were among topics discussed.
Around 200 participants gather annu-ally to attend the conference Swedish Philanthropy Summit. Bringing together perspectives from the US, Europe and
Sweden, a large number of Swedish and international speakers from academia as well as politics discuss philanthropy with donors, receiving organizations and an interested public. The conference 2018 highlighted new forms of investment and an increased role for philanthropy as a way of solving societal challenges.
Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research is the most prestigious international prize for research on entrepreneurship. The Pri-ze is awarded annually and consists of the statuette “The Hand of God”, created by Swedish Sculptor Carl Milles, and a Prize sum of 100,000 euros. showing how entrepreneurial activity and innovation are strongly embedded in soci-ally and spatially bounded relationships.
Since 2003 Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum have awarded young promising researchers the Young Researcher Award. The organization also participate in the international competition The Global Student Award.
Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum is the Swedish partner of the Global Entrepre-neurship Monitor (GEM), the largest glo-bal research venture on entrepreneurial ac-tivity. Since 2010, an annual Swedish report based on survey and interview data has

been published. The survey covers around 75 percent of the world population and 90 percent of global GDP. The national GEM report is presented in June every year. The 2018 edition has a special focus on social entrepreneurship.
Going on its tenth year Swedish Econo-mic Forum Report is a yearly anthology highlighting policy relevant issues in the present. The ninth edition focused on Swedish competitiveness and analyzed factors important for long-term competiti-veness and the ability to generate growth. One of the chapters contained a competi-tive scorecard which ranks Sweden based on a number of national factors that affect
companies’ competitiveness. The ambition of the report is to lay foundation for a regular follow-up of Swedish competi-tiveness. The 2018 report puts focus on entrepreneurship, market experiments and experimental policy.

Braunerhjelm cited 1000 times! One of the pioneers of a new theorem is Pontus Braunerhjelm, Research Director Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and Profes-sor BTH and KTH. His research, published in the leading journal Small Business Economics, has now been scientifically cited 1000 times. In The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship he describes, along with his co-authors, how a new research field have emerged since the beginning of the 21st century.
A Swedish Competitiveness ScorecardIn Swedish Economic Forum Report 2017 one chapter authored by Dr. Christian Ketels, Harvard Business School and Stockholm School of Economics, The Swedish Competitiveness Scorecard 2017, focuses on the current drivers of competitiveness in Sweden. Competitiveness is defined as the overall quality of all funda-mental factors that allow companies to achieve high productivity and thus support a high standard of living. The Competitiveness Scorecard organizes indicators around an impact logic connec-ting competitiveness fundamentals to economic activity to ulti-mate outcomes. The results shows that while Sweden continues to do well, the concern emerging from the analysis is that the country is currently not taking the steps necessary to ensure futu-re success. Sweden’s competitiveness is though high and under no imminent threat. But the country could do more for its future in a world that is getting less forgiving for missing opportunities
A unique networkThe network that Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum
has built up in the research community, industry and
among leading decision makers is organized within
the organization’s three forums. Each forum is chaired
by a steering committee that develops report ideas
within each subject area and plans outward activities in
connection with the launch of reports.
Economic Policy Forum gathers important stakeholders
in economic policy for policy discussions with particular
relevance for long-term, sustainable development of Swedish
business.
Through research Philanthropy Forum aims to highlight
the importance of philanthropy for economic growth and
prosperity. The Forum has hosted a number of public
seminars including the international event Swedish
Philanthropy Summit.
Regional Policy Forum focuses on regional opportunities
for Swedish business dynamics and long-term sustainable
growth. Based on the latest research the forum aims to point
to the economic policy measures that can help strengthen
entrepreneurship and competitiveness regionally.

Swedish Schumpeter LectureSwedish Schumpeter Lecture is an annual lecture series where world renowned scholars belonging to the Schumpeterian strand of economics present their research. The three latest have been Mark Skousen, presidential fellow at Chapman University in California, Saras D Sarasvathy, Professor Darden School of Business, University of Virginia and Mirjam van Praag, Copenhagen Business School.
Go Beyond GDP!Since 2014, the US is publishing GO - Gross Output - as a comple-mentary measure of GDP. GO is a broader measure of economic activity and serves as a complement to GDP. According to Mark Skousen, one of the world’s most influential economists, who introduced the new measure in the United States, the business sector (entrepreneurship, capital invest-ment, saving and investment) is considered far more impor-tant than consumer spending and government stimulus with GO. Swedish Entrepreneurship Summit published a policy summary on GO in conjunction with Swedish Schumpeter Lectures 2017.
Creating impact through philanthropy ”Creating impact through philanthropy – a Nordic perspective” is based on in-depth interviews with over 40 philanthropists across Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden focusing on issues such as donor motivations and influences, philanthropic practices and operations, challenges and obstacles to giving, the forms of support philanthropy can facilitate, and how its impacts might be strengthened. The report demonstrates the very specific flavor of Nordic philanthropy. Authors: Pontus Braunerhjelm, Research Director Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and Profes-sor BTH and KTH, and Johanna Palmberg, Research Director Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and associate professor Södertörn University. UBS Philanthropy Advisory sponsored the study.

Focus on property rights for Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research 2017On Monday May 15 the 2017 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research was awarded to Hernando de Soto, founder of the think-tank Institute of Liberty and Democracy (ILD), in Lima, Peru. He received the award from the Minister for Fi-nance Magdalena Andersson. De Soto received the award for developing a new understanding of the institutions that underpin the informal economy as well as the role of property rights and entrepreneurship in converting the informal economy into the formal sector.
Hernando de Soto, founder of Institute of Liberty and Democracy (ILD) in Lima, is one ofthe world’s most influential thin-kers – Time Magazine ranks him as one of Latin America’s five most distinguished innovators throughout the 20th century. De Soto has conducted academic research and contributed to public political discus-sions on global development over the last 30 years. His analyzes has prepared way for new approaches to alleviate poverty and underdevelopment by reforming ownership systems, company rules and legislation. Hernando de Soto’s analy-zes have had huge influence on politics
around the world and is the main source of inspiration for the World Bank’s Doing Business reports.
His contribution has led to a new and bet-ter understanding of the role of institutions for entrepreneurship, especially in deve-loping countries. De Soto’s work has paved way for new ways to judge and measure how difficult it is for people to enter the formal sector. He has also shown that shor-tage of capital is not the biggest problem in many developing countries. Instead, the lack of documented ownership is. De Soto claims that poorly defined ownership
rights hinder people from pro-ductive use of assets that they control. In his prize lecture, he referred to a large parallel world of five billion people without property rights or evidence of who they are. These five billion are not part of social networks of trust, said de Soto.
