Physicist Cindy Regal, University ofColorado Boulder, is the 2020 recipientof the Cottrell Frontiers in ResearchExcellence and Discovery (FRED)Award from Research Corporation forScience Advancement.
Regal’s research has focused onexperimental advances in quantuminformation and quantum optics. The$250,000 FRED Award will support herefforts to address challenges in nuclearspin detection and imaging, and tobroaden approaches to precisionmechanical sensing. Her pioneeringwork could create a new pathway forobserving spins through forcesignatures and perhaps enable 3Dimaging at the nanoscale.
Since 1994, the Cottrell Scholarprogram has developed outstandingteacher-scholars recognized by theirscientific communities for the qualityand innovation of their researchprograms and their academicleadership skills.
The FRED Award, one of a suite ofawards given to advance the researchof Cottrell Scholars throughout theircareers, recognizes and rewards highlycreative research that could transforman area of science.
By developing unique perspectives forsolving key challenges, Cottrell FREDawardees create new approaches thataccelerate basic science research forthe benefit of society.
