IN THIS ISSUE RPG and TopAkustik are proud to be selected to provide our most complex absorptive wood ceiling and custom suspension system to date in the world’s tallest building. The project was a significant challenge due to the technical aspects, the size and the prestige. RPG worked very closely on the Chairman’s Suites, which posed many challenges most of which centered on the fact that there were no right angles or straight edges. The project consisted of 750 custom, curved, rhombus-shaped panels with all sides of the panel radiused. The panels were supplied with no further field cutting required, which demanded a high level of communication and coordination. The perimeter of the complex ceiling array was required to follow the perimeter of the building facade with a specified reveal. RPG was responsible for coordinating all field measurements and shop drawings between all parties. To insure all panel perimeter shapes followed the curvature of the facade, RPG engaged a surveyor to make thousands of measurements from the origin reference point to the perimeter on three floors. A custom ceiling suspension system was also developed to accommodate the swaying of the building. The other portion of this project that utilized TopAkustik materials was the Sky Lobby, and it contained 1,800 pieces of Topperfo-M 16/16/6 with a Wenge veneer. The ceiling consisted of ten different height levels and all of the 1,800 different elements had to be individually removable. RPG worked with SOM Architects in Chicago and PMK Consultants to be specified on this project. The main contractor was Heehoon/Samsung of South Korea and communication was key to a successful installation. With complex projects like the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, The TimesCenter, NY and Morgan State University Library (with 2,000 unique sized panels), RPG has established a reputation as a leader in designing and supplying complex, custom engineered absorptive wood ceiling and suspension systems, using Topakustik, Topperfo and the new Topperfo Micro (with 30,000 holes/sf) planks and panels .
