Research can be considered - Low Importance- Having no outcome- Saving money/false economy- Small numbers interested

Advantages of Research - Improves Clinical Outcomes/Quality of Care- Safeguards the dignity, rights and safety of patients/clients- Majority of new devices/treatments have emanated from Healthcare Research- Raises standards of practice by participation in national/international studies- Engenders an enquiring, analytical, evidence based

approach to all clinical and social care interventions/treatments- Enhances the recruitment and retention of high quality staff

Research Governance Committee(Meets every six weeks)

TERMS OF REFERENCE - SUMMARY

• Promote, encourage and support research with all staff in the Trust.

• Consider all research proposals received (following initial screening against the Research Management System by the Associate Medical Director), and make appropriate decisions with regard to approval.

• Quality assure and sign-off research governance monitoring outputs prior to consideration by the Trust Research Governance Committee.

• Promote and encourage a multidisciplinary research culture in the Trust and with other agencies.

• Support the identification of research training needs of staff in the Trust and seek to ensure that these are met.

• Liaise with outside bodies that have a statutory or advisory role in research matters.

• Monitor funding from commercial and non-commercial funders and ensure that all research funding within the Trust is managed to a high standard of cost-effectiveness and accountability to the public.
