Context
• Significant energy put into to developing interdisciplinary research groupings
• Pumppriming from the Faculty and the University
• Dedicated support from the LHRI, particularly in administration and grant-capture
• Buy-outs for staff time
Results
• Some excellent initiatives
• Some significant grant capture
• Some more active than others
• Some ‘pure’ research, some with strong interests in teaching and KT
• Our ‘Impact’ agenda often emerging around these clusters
• Not enough collaboration outside Leeds
Large Clusters
• White Rose East Asia Centre (society, literature, but also politics and economics)
• Institute for Colonial and Postcolonial Studies – 40-50 members.
• Popular Cultures Network – 100 members across faculties and institutions
• The Mixed Cinema Network – across three universities, 30 members
Clusters with large grant capture
• White Rose Centre for East Asia – £4m, with second continuation funding going in
• ICPS – significant AHRC networks and AHRC KT grants, as well as Leverhulme
• Institute for Religion in Public Life – Major awards under AHRC/ESRC Religion and Society programme
• The Centre for History of Science and Philosophy of Science – ‘Owning and Disowning Invention’ (360k from AHRC)
• The Centre for Aesthetics - £650k from ahrc, ‘Method in Philsophical Aesthetics: The Challenge from The Sciences’
• The Centre for Translation Studies – major EU awards in computer-assisted translation
• The Mixed Cinema Network – White Rose and Leverhulme awards
Clusters with a Teaching/KT Dimension
• Dante Centre – public lectures (100+); podcasts (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/italian/cdspodcast.htm); and student conferences (as well as significant research collaborations, e.g. Notre Dame)
• Institute for Religion in Public Life – public lectures, interactions with local community groups, museums and galleries
• The Centre for History of Science and Philosophy of Science – collaborations with museums, including Royal Armouries
New Developments
• Print, Culture and Society – University Transformation Bid (£5m), with 50 members across the University
• From Honour to Respect: Violence and Identity (with significant KT dimensions)
• Medicine and the Everyday – 50 members across faculties; Wellcome Trust MH
