MISSION AND

PURPOSEThe Society for Freshwater Science (SFS), formerly the North American Benthological Society (NABS), is an international organization whose members study freshwater organisms, biotic communities, physical processes that affect ecosystem function, linkages between freshwater ecosystems and surrounding landscapes, habitat and water quality assessment, conservation, and restoration.

SFS fosters exchange of scientific information among members, other professional societies, resource managers, policy makers, educators, and the public.

SFS is composed of almost 1800 members, many of whom are students, who represent over 50 countries.

HABITATS OF

INTERESTMembers study a range of ecological processes and communities occurring in a variety of aquatic ecosystems around the world. Although most of the focus is on rivers and streams, members also conduct research in lakes, reservoirs, riparian areas, wetlands, bogs, fens, and estuaries.

SOCIETY ACTIVITIESFreshwater Science (formerly J-NABS), the scientific journal of the society, is released quarterly and has one of the highest citation impacts in the field of aquatic sciences.

The SFS Annual Meeting, usually held in the USA or Canada, is typically attended by >800 people, including many students. With an open and friendly environment, the meeting includes communications, special sessions, workshops and a taxonomy fair.

Ongoing activities of the society and news about freshwater science are published in three bulletins and newsletters annually, and on the SFS Website, Facebook, and Twitter.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS• Membership in the most important society in freshwater science • Access to on-line SFS publications: Freshwater Science (journal), SFS Bulletin, In the Drift (newsletter),

Current & Selected Bibliography• Reduced fees for Annual Meeting

attendance• Student awards for travel, basic /

applied research, & conservation• Easy contact among members through SFS membership directory & Facebook page• Opportunity to mentor students through the Instars program• Possibility for earning professional certification of taxonomic skills with benthic macroinvertebrates through on-line and hands-on tests
