Untreatedco-occurringmedicalconditionsmayberesponsiblefortheincreasedmorbidityandmortalityfoundamongpeoplewithseriousmentalillness.Policymakersincreasinglyviewprovidingintegratedpsychiatriccarewithinthemedicaltreatmentsettingasavalue-addedservice.Willintegratingmedicalcarewithinthementalhealthtreatmentsettingprovidethesameorgreatervalue?

Thispresentationwilldefineanddescribeeffortstoprovidemedicaltreatmentwithinthementalhealthtreatmentsetting(i.e."reverseintegration")andprovideareviewoftheevidencethatsupportsitsimplementation.

MESSAGEFROMTHECHAIR‘Research’isoftenanintimidatingword.Asagraduatestudentatthe

UniversityofDenverSchoolofSocialWork,I,likesomanyofmypeers,felt

uncomfortablewithourresearchcapstone.“WhenwillIactuallyusemy

researchskills?”wefrequentlyaskedourselves.Theapplicationofresearch

wasnotintuitiveandeasilytookabackseattolearningclinicalskillssuchas

interviewing,differentialdiagnosis,andtherapeuticengagement.Iwas

uncertainoftheutilityofhavingfuturecliniciansdeveloparesearch

programanalysis,andonceIgraduated,IthoughtIhadleftthewhole

conceptbehindme—justanotherhurdleto“real”clinicalpractice.

Sometimesitiswonderfultobewrong!

Everythingwedoforourpatientsascliniciansandstaffinmentalhealthis

motivatedbythesameinstinctsthatdriveresearch:curiosity,beneficence,

ethics,andanintrinsicdesiretohelpothers.Researchismorethanjusta

practice;itisamindset.Itisanongoingcriticalexaminationofourselves,ourpatients,andourcurrentpracticeswith

theintentionofadvancingourcollectiveknowledgeofourpopulation,sharingmeaningfuloutcomes,anddeveloping

theevidence-basetoadvanceourservice.

TodayyouwillseeashowcaseofprojectsundertakenatEasternStateHospitalandUKHealthCaretofurtherthebody

ofclinicalknowledgeinbehavioralhealthcare,aswellastoimproveoutcomesanddevelopeffectivenewinterventions.

TheseprojectsalldemonstratetheDIReCTvaluesweshare:Diversity,Innovation,Respect,Compassion,andTeamwork.

Ourspecialcommitmenttoteamworkandinnovationisparticularlyhighlightedthroughthediverseinterdisciplinary

workandcreativeproblem-solvingdrivenbytherespectandcompassionweshowourpatientseveryday.Weare

SethS.Himelhoch,MD,MPH,istheCollegeofMedicine’schairofpsychiatry.Heplaysavitalroleinthecollege’smissiontoimpactthestandardsanddeliveryofcarerelatedtomentalhealthandsubstanceusedisordersinthecommonwealth.

Dr.HimelhochcametoUKfromtheUniversityofMaryland,whereheservedasaprofessorofpsychiatry.Inresearch,hehasfocusedondevelopingandtestinginterventionstoimproveaccesstoandoutcomesofcareforpeoplewithco-occurringpsychiatricanddrugusedisorders.AsafellowoftheRobertWoodJohnsonClinicalScholarsProgram,heisworkingtodevelopinterventionsforruralcommunitiessufferingfromtheconsequencesoftheopiateepidemic.

Aschair,Dr.Himelhochwillestablishjuniorfacultymentoringopportunities,increaseresearchefforts,andexploretelepsychiatryservices.HewillalsoestablishtheDivisionofSubstanceAbuseTreatment,anadministrativeresourceforallsubstanceuseclinicalservicesatUKthatwilldrivethegrowthoftreatmentdeliverymodels.

IncoordinationwiththeOfficeoftheEVPHAandinstitutionsthroughoutthecommonwealth,Dr.Himelhochwilldevelopafullyintegratedsystemofcareforpatientswithbehavioralhealthandsubstanceusedisordersacrosstheenterprise.

AssubstanceuseandaddictiondisordersremainaleadingconcernforKentucky,Dr.Himelhochandhisdepartmentaimstopartnerwithbehavioralscience,theCenteronDrugandAlcoholResearch,EasternStateHospitalandotherstoestablishaCenteronMentalHealthandSubstanceUsewiththegoaloffurtherdevelopingresearchactivitiesacrosstheuniversity.
