ICCONS is an autonomous institute under Govt. of
Kerala for the comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment,
management, rehabilitation, and research and
development in the area of cognitive and
communicative disorders. It is the first NABH accredited
neuroscience centre in the country. The Neurogenetics
Department of ICCONS has full-fledged, state-of-art
facilities for basic and advanced molecular and genetics
research. The research projects are being sponsored by
central and state govt funding agencies. These projects are
aimed at unravelling the evolutionary, genetic and
neurobiological mechanisms involved in basic cognitive
functions.

Shedding light on the genetic
causes of complex diseases
Shoranur, geographically located exactly at the central part of
Kerala is famous as the railway entry point to the state though
Palakkad gap of the Western Ghats and serves as the nerve
centre of rail traffic. It is located on the banks of the river Nila,
which groomed the culture and life of the South Malabar part of
Kerala. The Cochin bridge, constructed here over 100 years
back was the first road connection between southern and
northen parts of the state. The world renowned Kerala
Kalamandalam, the learning and training centre for traditional
performing art forms, is located on the other bank of the river
at Shoranur. The
region, to some
extent, has
withstood the
rapid urbanization
of Kerala, and
still maintains
most of its pristine
beauty with lush
greenery, crisp fresh air and vast stretches of picturesque paddy
fields, fringed with swaying Palmyra palms. The charm of the
region has fascinated many a writers and poets and the area has
been a favorite location for moviemakers for its finest frames
with majestic heritage homes, temples and ponds. Kavalappara,
3 km form the Shoranur
town, where ICCONS
is situated, was the
centre of erstwhile
“ “Kavalappara Desam”, a
feudal family that
controlled 96 villages till
the 19th century. A part of
the Kavalappara palace still exists, though in ruins, just
adjacent to the Institute main campus.

There is an upward trend in the use of genomic tools for the clinical diagnosisof genetic disorders, and its contribution is likely to increase considerably in the near future. To accelerate this progress, it is essential to elucidate the etiological mechanisms ofdiseases and to identify innovative approaches for developinggenetic screening tests. However, dissecting the genes andmechanisms involved in complex diseases has yielded onlylimited success owing to the polygenic nature of these disorders;several genetic and environmental factors contribute to thepathogenesis of complex disorders. The conference will featurerecent advances in high throughput sequencing technologies forthe detection of polygenic susceptibility, bioinformatics tools fordata mining, and ethical, legal and social issues in genetictesting and counseling for complex disorders.
This event will bring together a multidisciplinary group ofclinicians, research scientists, bioinformaticians andtechnology developers interested in using genomicadvances for a deeper understanding of the
pathogenic mechanisms of complexgenetic disorders.
We invite
researchers, medical
doctors and students who are
engaged in Genetics, Molecular Biology,
Biochemistry research to present their
observations. All other interested parties are
also welcome.
