QUALITY, MEASURABILITY, WILD RE-CREATION AND DEDICATION TO IMPROVING WELFAREThese are the four headings that we would use to describe the commitment of Arcadia Reptile towards animal welfare.

As a company we believe in good scientific research that can be used to engineer the very finest solar re-creation systems in the world. As a group of animal welfare professionals ourselves we simply cannot leave the provision of solar energy to chance any longer. A “Put a lamp in somewhere and it will be ok” attitude is contrary to our goals and ethics.

We are passionate believers in the principles of “wild re-creation” and allowing every given species to self-regulate as nature intended and to the parameters of the wild animal in a safe and measured way. We are convinced that the full implementation of the “light and shade method” is a key to improving both animal health and wellbeing and increase the numbers of captive bred species.

We also offer peace of mind to keepers, every UV producing product that we list will have

had a minimum of a year in R&D and will have been independently tested alongside our own in-house tests to ensure that every single product delivers on our high expectations. We are also proud to announce that all Arcadia Reptile branded lamps come with a 12 month guarantee. This guarantee not only covers lamp failure but also its output in terms of UV energy. We guarantee that our lamps will be upper index potent for this whole period*

We are therefore delighted to present to you our range of Arcadia Reptile Solar re-creation systems. These include our handmade range of SuperZooT5 and ZooBar fittings which have been specifically designed with some of the world’s finest Zoos and zoological professionals to be able to deliver a quantity of power, over an area that has never been possible before.

As one reptile fanatic to another I would like to welcome you personally to our “Revolution in reptile care”.

This X-ray is from a female green iguana, historically they suffer with Ca depletion in captivity which leads to MBD. These animals come from a very high index area of the world and have evolved an inbuilt protection from the sun in the form of a thick skin. In the past reptile brands have assumed that these species require a less powerful system as they have this protection. But MBD occurs at scary amounts.

This thinking is fundamentally wrong. If an animal has taken millions of years to evolve to thrive in its wild environment and has as such evolved a protecting factor we need to provide the same index as part of the light and shade method so that the drop in absorption by this inbuilt protection is mitigated and the D3 cycle can complete.

These X-rays show a very healthy and Ca rich skeleton. The vet had said that he had never seen such a vibrantly coloured green iguana nor such a healthy one.

UVB LIGHT WARMTH

The D3 Cycle is a chemical and hormonal change in the body of an animal, which goes on to produce vitamin D3. This is a biological process that is dependent on many external factors including access to natural light, heat, cool and rest. It is worth noting that although vital to the well being of reptiles, UV exposure plays many more roles in the body than just the D3 cycle. Impacts on sight, breeding and mental well being are all documented and are undergoing continued research.

This amazing process begins when a cholesterol called pro vitamin D(7DHC) is produced in the animal’s skin (it is a natural process in humans too). When this cholesterol is exposed to natural light (including light in the UVB wavelength (290-315nm)), this cholesterol is turned in the skin membrane into pre vitamin D.

After exposure to warmth, this newly manufactured pre vitamin D is converted (in the skin membrane) into vitamin D3. It is essential to have this heating up period alongside UV radiation. Vitamin D3 is then sent out into the blood plasma and is bound with a vitamin D binding protein. This is then carried to the liver where this part of this vitamin is converted to a hormone called calcediol (25-hydroxy vitamin D3).

The blood carries this calcediol all around the body and into the kidneys where some of the hormone is turned into another hormone, called calcetriol. This compound then plays an essential role in calcium metabolism and controls the levels of calcium in the blood. Calcetriol also plays a huge role in the immune system and the cardiovascular system. It has been shown to lower the risk of cancers in the body and skin.

So we can see that exposure to natural sunlight is only the start of this amazing ability in reptiles and humans alike, to turn sunlight into life saving vitamins. This D3 cycle is dependent on the completion of the D3 cycle. If part of the cycle is missed out then the cycle cannot be completed properly. Changes and reactions would also be unable to be completed properly. This would result in an under provision of essential vitamins and hormones, and if supplementation were not used, a calcium crash could happen.

In their natural environment, reptiles have regular exposure to direct light from the sun, which in addition to visible light also contains light in the ultra-violet (UV) spectrum. This UV energy is important, as it drives a chemical reaction in the skin, resulting to the formation of vitamin D3, which is essential in allowing some species of reptiles to metabolise calcium to the levels necessary for healthy skeletal development.

When a captive reptile is not exposed to DIRECT sunlight (sunlight entering through windows has its UVB component blocked by the glass), then the resulting lack of vitamin D3 can cause bones to become brittle and misshapen. Other hard structures, such as scales, claws, and the carapace of tortoises or turtles are adversely affected without sunlight.

Other reptiles – some snakes for example, obtain more of their vitamin D3 requirement from their diet, but still rely on skin synthesis. These are often active at night, and have a diet consisting of small vertebrate prey, which is rich in vitamin D3.

Although all reptiles utilise the sun’s UV, the degree to which they do so varies. Some, for instance iguanas, gain all of their vitamin D3 from utilising UV light, and so are totally reliant on it, and quickly develop problems if not exposed to sufficient UV light. Most of these reptiles are day active, and often have a diet rich in vegetation and/or small invertebrates.

Not only do reptiles (and their owners) need light to be able to see around the vivarium, but light - specifically ultra-violet light, is also essential for many reptiles development and health.

LIGHTING REPTILES & MAMMALS

Page 4: Reptile Zoo Catalogue

In late 2010 Arcadia launched the first complete range of high output, high UVB T5 reptile lamps in both 6% and 12% UVB.

High output T5 represents a huge jump forward in the technology associated with the keeping and breeding captive reptiles.

Huge volumes of light and UV will have a direct effect on the animation and health of a captive reptile, even stopping brumation in some species.

Using an electronic control system high output T5 lamps emit a massive 2-3 times more light and usable UV when used with the correct reflector and compared with the relative Arcadia T8 Lamp.

The distance light has to travel between lamp to animal makes a huge difference in the power available to the animal and its ability to complete the D3 cycle properly.

Providing the correct environment is one of the most vital parts of keeping reptiles happy and healthy.

High Output UVB lamps dramatically increase the amount of usable UVB to the animal and are especially useful for illuminating large terrestrial enclosures. n 100%+ more visible light than equivalent

The shape of the UVB beam from a lamp, and the UVB gradient which it creates, are very important. The beam must be wide enough for the reptile to place most, if not all of its body within the zone of effective UVB radiation at a suitable basking distance.

An iso-irradiance chart (‘spread chart’, as seen below) was therefore plotted for the unit, for each of the three combinations of tubes in the trial, using a Solarmeter 6.5 UV Index Meter.

Over the last 5 years reptile lighting science has grown and evolved and allowed the keeping and breeding of captive reptiles to become easier and more productive. Arcadia Reptile have led the world in designing the very best “Solar re-creation” systems and pioneered True High Output T5 technology.

The Arcadia Reptile UV Flood uses state of the art electronics to provide a flicker free and highly energy efficient source of lighting. High Output Compact lighting enables keepers to use a true High Output source of lighting in smaller enclosures than ever before and as a supplementary “boosting zone” in larger enclosures.

The D3 UV Basking lamp is a high performance lamp providing UVB, UVA visible light and heat from a single lamp.

Designed as a basking lamp for larger vivaria in which the reptile has sufficient room to move into and out of the basking area to regulate its temperature.

It is recommended that vivariums over 600mm in length, that a high output T5 lamp is used alongside these UV rich basking spots.

This then opens up the graduated power zones and allows the animals to decide when and where to bask and assimilate the power that it requires at that moment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ULTRA VIOLET LIGHTBird lighting is one of those products that if fitted properly shows results almost immediately. As soon as the lamp is switched on you will generally see the birds become more animated. In the case of song birds the cocks usually break-out into spontaneous song. As a test I have never yet encountered a cock canary that is out of song, not to start singing again within a few hours of the provision of an avian UV lamp provided in the correct way.

Cock whydahs bounce up and down and display within seconds, parrots will be drawn to a lamp and actively bask under it. They will typically open their wings and ruffle the breast feathers to allow exposure of the rays to their skin. Bare-faced birds will sometimes blush. It really is amazing!

Most household lamps emit a very small amount of UVA. Unfortunately, the percentage of UVA that these lamps emit is not enough to cause a reaction in a bird. If the total output of light, including invisible light, is called 100 per cent, we at Arcadia recommend that 12 per cent of the total should be UVA. All lamps have inherent limitations, and UVA and UVB does not travel very far from its source.

So, it is no use simply fitting a Bird Lamp in the ceiling of a birdroom. The birds need to be able to position themselves quite closely to the lamp to be able to utilise the emissions properly. Safety is the key and as we all know parrots have large powerful beaks. All lighting equipment should be fitted safely and out of the way of the bird’s reach.

It is vital that we do not confuse full spectrum lamps that have a pleasing natural daylight colour with UV-emitting full spectrum lamps – they are totally different! UVA and UVB cannot pass through glass or plastics these materials block these wavelengths, even aviary mesh will slightly reduce the bird’s ability to obtain and absorb these wavelengths.

Arcadia has pioneered further ground breaking research and photography of a whole host of species when illuminated with ultraviolet light.

This could give us an indication of the sexes and mate selection in monomorphic species and may even help us understand wild food selection.

FEATHERS ACTUALLY FLUORESCE UNDER A UVA SOURCE

Birds use UVA in the way that they view the world. This is called Tetrachromacy, which is the term used to describe the addition of the all important fourth cone cell in the eye of birds, reptiles and some fish.

This fourth cone cell allows the bird to see wavelengths of light that humans simply cannot see i.e far into red and blue and also into the ultra violet wavelength.

UVA is described as the wavelengths of light ranging between 320nm and 400nms.

This wavelength is not short enough to start the D3 cycle on its own but has many other reported positive effects in and around birds and reptiles.

A balanced natural provision of the correct UVA wavelengths will not only allow the animal to view the world in a more natural way but has been linked to a better feeding response, a more constructive social behavioral pattern and is now also starting to be linked to the production of certain hormones and chemical responses in the brain.

A fully illuminated photoperiod including UVA has also been shown to aid in beneficial preening and daily cleaning.

In an effort to try to see any of the reported fluorescent patches on birds Arcadia has undertaken an extensive project with expert animal photographer Adam Hough to take these UV Images.

The objective is to document any differences between the sexes, especially in monomorphic species and as they age.

Birds can suffer from chronic D3 deficiency which can lead to a critical lack of Calcium which can lead to bone density issues and even feather plucking. We call this MBD (Metabolic Bone disease).

UVB is used by birds to manufacture safely within their own bodies vitamin D3 which is the catalyst to good Calcium assimilation, storage and use.

Being Tetrachromatic, birds are able to see a reported 100 million colours from deep violet right the way through to the far red wavelengths. This has been show to effect food and mate selection and could also help with maintaining a stress free and more natural surroundings in which the birds can live.
