Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing students for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students A lot has happened in this short term and we are now only a couple of weeks away from holidays. The last few weeks of term are going to be busy. We have a whole school reward, Cross country and a free dress day to look forward to. The school Reporting Afternoon will occur on Wednesday the 27 th of June. The school will be closing early to allow time for extended parent interviews. School will close at 1.45 with interviews starting at 2.00pm. Please put this date in your calendar, and if you need, organise for your child to be collected early. We will be using an online booking system for parents to book interviews with the teachers. A note will go out on Monday explaining the process and giving the link to the website. We have had a number of excursions in the last couple of weeks. The year 6’s attended Murdoch University to see a play called ‘The Phoenix and the Fighting Pandas of Yunnan Province” while the year 4’s went to see ‘A Ghost in my Suitcase’ at the Heath Ledger Theatre. The behaviour of our students was described as impeccable. Coming up is a year 5 excursion to Fremantle and incursions for year 2 and Kindy. Please remember that it is a 40km zone around schools at drop off and pick up times. Although most drivers follow the speed limits, some cars are still travelling too fast, especially along Harlow road. Flashing 40km/h signs are installed on Harlow Road to remind all motor vehicles. We do not wish any student to get hurt around our school. The school board is responsible for the school uniform policy. We expect that all students wear school uniform to school every day and thank parents for their support in ensuring that this happens. Research has shown that a school uniform helps to maintain a sense of belonging for students and can reduce the incidences of bullying. We have recently had a number of students coming to school in various coloured tights, socks and non-school jumpers. Students that are out of uniform will not be permitted to attend any school excursion. At the end of the term we will sadly be farewelling Lisa Coon. Lisa has been with us since last year and will be missed by students, staff and the whole community. Lisa is returning to Darwin where she has family. We wish her all the best. Yvette Kmetty, who has been on maternity leave, will replace Lisa in the year 6 class so we expect a smooth transition. We are very pleased that Teana Jenkins, who was originally only appointed for 6 months, has had her contract extended for the rest of the year in the year 4 class. This week’s assembly is presented by rooms 3 and 5, so please come along and enjoy a cuppa in the Child and Parent Centre afterwards. Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students

A lot has happened in this short term and we are now only a couple of weeks away from holidays. The last few weeks of term are going to be busy. We have a whole school reward, Cross country and a free dress day to look forward to.

The school Reporting Afternoon will occur on Wednesday the 27th of June. The school will be closing early to allow time for extended parent interviews. School will close at 1.45 with interviews starting at 2.00pm. Please put this date in your calendar, and if you need, organise for your child to be collected early. A Ghost in My Suitcase” Theatre Production. On 7th June, our Year 4 students went to watch the play “A Ghost in My Suitcase” at the Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth. Watching the play was different to watching a movie as we could actually see the actors on stage and they could hear us. The lighting and sound gave us a different experience too. After the play had finished we got to the meet the directors and the lead actress. It was a lovely day.

Year 3 Firefighter Visit The year 3's were treated to an incursion from Hope Valley Fire Station where they learned about home fire safety and all about the fire trucks!

ABORIGINAL SEASONS Makuru Cold and wet time of the year (fertility season) June - July Makaru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and thus their food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the lands in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo. As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, 'Yongar' or kangaroos not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears.

Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'Wardongs' (ravens) flying together. You also notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.

Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.

Library Display Mrs Regan has put together a wonderful display in the school library, showcasing a variety of books suitable for people with blindness. There is even a Perkins Brailler machine on display! Students are encouraged to go to the library during recess and lunch time and have a look at the fantastic resources on display. Kye in Year 4 is thrilled with the range of resources.

KINDY ENROLMENTS Kindy enrolments for 2019 are now open. If you have a child that was born between 1/7/14 and 30/6/15, please call into the office to complete an application form to enrol your child. Please remember to bring your child’s birth certificate, immunisation record and proof of address.

Student Social Worker’s for term 3

Hello parents and students, My name is Rajesh and I am one of Calista’s student social workers who will be working at the school in Term 3. I am currently in my first year at the University of Western Australia undertaking my Masters in Social Work. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of you and contributing to your school and community in every way possible. I am originally from Singapore and have lived in Perth since 2013. Before coming to Perth, I completed my Diploma in Early Childhood Psychology in Singapore. Since coming to Perth, I have completed an Undergraduate degree in Legal Studies at Murdoch University. I like to play soccer and watch movies in my free time, and yes, I am a fan of the Marvels. I also love out-door activities such as rock climbing, fishing, camping, hiking and running. I was in the Army for 3 years while in Singapore and have lots of unforgettable stories of jungle training, camp life and survival training. I would love to share my experiences and interests with you and I look forward to working with and supporting the students and families at Calista.
