The Organisation In1969,Non-ProfitOrganizationsfromdifferentpartsofthecountrycametogetherwiththeobjective
ofpromotingqualitytechnical/vocationalskilltrainingforunderprivilegedyouth.Thisinitiativeresulted
inanation-widenetworkcalledSKILLSFORPROGRESS–SKIP“AnallIndiaAssociationofPrivateTechnical
andVocationalTrainingInstitutes”.
Duringthe1970s,thefocuswasonformaltechnicaltraining.Withtheindustrializationinthecountry,
thestatusoftertiaryskilltraininggrewatarapidpaceandformaltraining,toalargeextent,wentoutof
thereachofthepooryouth.Duringthistime,SKIPbeganprommotingnon-formalskilltrainingforthe
schooldropoutsandotherswhocouldnotgetanopportunitytobetrainedintheformalschools.
SomeoftheSKIPmemberinstitutionshavebeenestablishedmorethanahundredyearsago.Itwas
envisaged that youth,mainly from poorer sections of our society, after training in these institutions,
wouldbeemployedintheupcomingindustries.Inordertocoordinateandenhancetheirservices,some
farsightedindividualsgottogetherandregisteredSKILLSFORPROGRESS(SKIP)undertheMysoreSocieties
RegistrationAct,1960.
Fromthe initial9 foundingmembersof1969,SKIP’smembership isnow214member institutions
spreadacrossthecountryalongwith20associatemembers.
SKIP’smembersarelocatedalloverIndia,andoneinNepal.SKIPhasthefollowing8geographicalRegionsmanagedby1Women’sRepresentativeand8HonoraryRegionalSecretariesforeveryRegion.

Awarmwelcometoyouall.
Itgivesmegreatpleasuretosharewithyoutheactivitiesandtheimpact
that,SKIPhasachievedduring2015–16.SKIPfocushasbeentobringquality
vocationaltrainingonemployableskillstowholiveonthemarginsofour
societyandaredeprivedofallbasicrights.Inthelastfortysevenyearswe
havetouchedthelivesofnearly6,00,000youthbyprovidingthemwithnot
onlyqualitytraininginajoyousandcreativeatmosphere,butalsoensuring
theirholisticdevelopment.
Todaytheyouthinthecountryfeelvaluable,happyandhealthy,learningandpreparingtoachieve
theirfullpotential.
Ourcloseassociationwiththemanymarginalisedcommunitiesmadeusrealisethatunlessweimprove
thelivesofthewomenofourcountry,wecannotbringinSustainableDevelopment.Specialfocusonthem
toprovideskillstraininginthetribalStatesfocusing90%womenandyounggirls.
Thusbeganourjourneytobringvocationaleducation,skilldevelopmentandlivelihoodtothewomen
livinginthemostunderdevelopedcommunitiesinourcitiesandinruralIndia.Overtwoyearsofwork
onwomenempowerment, itgivesus immensesatisfactiontoseethewomenwhowereearlier facing
exclusionfromallopportunitiesfordevelopmentandsilentlysufferingabuse,nowearningalivelihood
andfacingtheirliveswithgreaterconfidenceandhope.
OursincerethankstooursupportersanddonorsandthemembersofSKIPwithoutwhosecontribution
wecouldnothavechangedsomanylives.

General Secretary’s Message
The current skills scenario in India in skilling and re-skilling is being
implementedupinlargescaleimplementationundervariousskillsmissionand
schemeslike‘PMKVY’(PradhanMantriKaushalVikasYojana),‘DDUGKY’(Deen
DayalUpadhyayGrameenKaushalyaYojana)’Make in India’ ‘ Startup India’
andmanyothersuchinitiativesthathavegivenevenabiggerpushtotheskills
sectorpledgingdemandforqualityofskills.
As skillinghasbeenaNational priority,Governmentof India and various
StateGovernments,IndustriesandCorporatesaremorethanwillingtosupporttheyouthofournation
withskillsthathavejobopportunitiesinIndiaandoverseas.Themomentumgainedcurrentlyisgoodfor
theIndianeconomyforittofarewellinthedevelopmentindex.Atthesametimeinstilldignityandpride
amongouryouthandtheunemployed.
SKIP’stechnologypartnershavebeenagoodsupporttousinourmission.ThenewCSRbillthatis
ineffectfromlastyearhaschangedthelandscapeofskillsdevelopmentascorporatesarenoweagerto
complywiththenewCSRact inwhichmanyofthemare lookingforwardtogetconnectedwithgood
development organization and institutes as a long time training partner for doing their part of social
good.
TheFY2015-16hasbeengoodyearforSKIPasnumberofcorporateshasforgedcollaborationsand
expressedtheirinterestwithSKIPinskillingandothersocialdevelopmentinterventions.Suchcollaborations
havealwaysbeenveryencouragingandmotivatingSKIPas theoverseas fundinghasdwindled for the
developmentsectors.SinceallSKIPmembersarecharitableinnatureandnot-for-profit,manyofthem
havetomanagetheirresourcesstringently.Suchcorporateandindustrypartnershipswillhelpinsustaining
theinstitutesbysupplementingtheoperationalandtrainingcostinskillinganddevelopment
AsSKIPembarksintothenextfiscalyear,wethankallourcorporatepartnerswhohavevestedtheir
trustinus.Wewillcertainlycarryforwardourvisionandmissionthroughskillingandre-skillinginitiatives
forthemarginalisedandtheunemployedyouthacrossIndiabyenhanceingtheirqualityoflifeandinthe
growthanddevelopmentofourNation.

Scholarship Program:
Theprogram,inexistencefor30yearsandmore,hashelpedthousandsforpoorboysandgirlsto
obtainskills trainingandprocureemploymentortakeupself-employment. Priorityhasbeengivento
womenundertheScholarshipProgramtoencouragemorewomenforskilltrainingandemployment.
Since2006,SKIPismeetingthecostsoftheScholarshipProgramfromitsownrevenues.

Short Term Skill Training Program:
Our proposal for project titled “Occupational Skills Training for school dropout girls and young
unemployedwomenfromthetribalandtheneglectedcommunity”to“Deutsch-IndischesKinderhilfswerk”
(DIK),Germanywassanctionedfor2yrs,2014and2015.
Highlights:
e22SKIPmemberinstitutionsimplementedshorttermskilltrainingon15differenttrades.
eAtotalof1023girls&177boysweretrained.
eProvidedsupportto200girlsforEnterpriseSetup.
eShortTermSkillTrainingof3monthsdurationwasimpartedonthefollowingtrades:
Thefirstyear’sproject,successfullytrainedatotalof600beneficiariesofwhich507wereyounggirls
andunemployedwomenand93boyson9differenttrades.AtotalofINR.32,03,000.00withINR.7,50,000.00
forEnterprisesetupwasprovidedto100girls.
The second year’s project, successfully trained a total of 600 beneficiaries of which 502 were
younggirlsandunemployedwomenand84boyson9differenttrades.AtotalofINR.22,44,000.00with
INR.7,50,000.00forEnterprisesetupwasprovidedto100girls.
Underthis2yearsproject,atotalof22SKIPmemberinstitutesespeciallyfromtheNorthEastand
CentralIndia,mostlytheTribalandbackwardStateswereselectedforimplementingtheshorttermskills
trainingwhosuccessfullytrained1200traineeswhowerefromtheverylowincomegroupandeconomically
weakercategory.

Overallitwasgoodworkingexperiencethatenrichedourcommitmenttothepoortraineesandhas
addedvaluetoourcapacitiesandourendeavours.

verypoorfamily.Herfatherandbrothersdoagriculturework.Kolostieekaiswasaschooldropoutasthey
hadfinancialproblemsandshewasabletostudyonlytillstandard9th.Shejoinedthe3monthsshort
termskilltrainingatSt.Anne’sMahilaKalyanKendra,andcompletedthetrainingwiththecertificate.
Shestatedthat,thistrainingwasveryusefulltoherwithjoborientedtraining.Hence,shethanksSKIP

A novel project for girls:
DonBoscoSERI,HowrahhasstartedauniqueprojectforthepassedoutgirlsstudentsoftheInstitute.
Thereare12girlsformed6companies,specializedinbuildingmodularkitchensandmodernbathrooms
inapartmentblocks.They’reallpartofanovelinitiativecalledas“Nariprise”(acombinationof‘nari’and
‘enterprise’),whichmeansbuildinggirlpower,brickbybrick.Thisprojectiscreatingawarenessamong
girlsforcareerprogressionandleadtoadignifiedlife.
