REPORT WRITING
A REPORT CAN BE WRITTEN FOR A NEWSPAPER OR A MAGAZINE. IN A REPORT AN EVENT, WHICH CAN BE A PLANNED ONE, AN ACCIDENT OR A NATURAL CALAMITY, IS REPORTED.

ESSENTIALS OF WRITING REPORT -
Appropriate form of language. Past passive and past tense should be used while
writing. Logical development of ideas. Factual description and process writing should be
in present tense. Report should be brief and clear. It should have a title,date,place of origin,time and
name of the reporter.
GUIDELINES FOR WRITING AN EFFECTIVE REPORT. Give a suitable attention heading (preferably in
passive voice) Under the heading write the reporter’s
name/Designation Write the date and name of the city if you are
writing the report for a newspaper. Begin with – when , what happened , where
Next give details of the event. Also quote a statement made by any witness.
Conclude with the reaction of the people/victims/spectators/officials-whichever is appropriate.
NOTERemember to use the correct tense. For an event that is already over, use the past/past perfect tense. For an event which is still continuing use the present continuous tense. For situations expected in the future use the future tense.
VALUE POINTS OF REPORTS
A) ACCIDENT/CALAMITY/DISEASE OUTBREAK/ROBBERY -
Catchy headlines-expansion of headlines in the first sentence itself is highlighting what/when/where.
Give reasons, if any. Details in brief. Eyewitness account. Casualties damage etc. (if any) Action taken, relief measures. (if any) Conclusion/Comments.
B) CULTURAL/SPORTS EVENTS -
Occasion/organization/sponser etc. Date,venue,time. Chief guest/special invitees. Objectives and main highlights of the
programme. Prize distribution. Message by the chief guest. Vote of thanks. Over all response.
C) COMPETITIONS
Occasion/organizer/sponser. Date , Venue, time. Name of the competition level , topic etc. Participations. Inaugural ceremony/welcome. Chief Guest, judge etc. Highlights related to performances, result etc. Prize distribution. Special remarks, if any. Vote of thanks.
D) WORKSHOP/SEMINAR/TALK What, by whom, For whom. Date, Venue, Duration. Guest speaker, panel of experts. Chief Guest, invitees. Activities undertaken. Aids used - audio-visual, charts, documentary,
films etc. Literary or field activities, if any. Interactive session including question – answers. Experts comments. Over all effect.
E) RALLY/CAMPAIGN
What/by whom. Duration/Venue, Places covered. Objectives/motto Activities undertaken. Any display/educational material used. e.g.
Placard, Banner, Pamphlet etc. Over all success.
F) CAMP/VISIT/EXHIBITION -
Place, destination Organizer, sponser (if any) Duration, date etc. No. of persons/visitors etc. Description –
a) Theme of exhibition, type –b) Places of sight seeing, food, scenic beauty etc.c) Purpose of nature of camp, activities.
